  • To examine the attitude of students toward animals and its relation to veterinary ethical decision making, 302 pre-veterinary and veterinary students of three national universities (Seoul, Chungbuk and Kyungsang National University) were requested to answer the Animal Attitude Scale Test, an indicator of one's pro-animal attitude. A significant gender difference in the AAS scores was found with higher scores in females (female vs. male, 65.27 vs. 57.40; p < 0.0001). The students who have companion animals had higher AAS scores (62.55) than those who donot (58.03, p < 0.0001). However, years of study and experience with animal protection activities did not affect the AAS scores. The correlation between the attitude toward animals and ethical decision making was found in the investigation with two cases of a veterinary ethical dilemma: the medical treatment of a cow in its last gestation stage with ocular squamous cell carcinoma and the euthanizing of a 12 year-old dog with urinary incontinence. The students tend to support for veterinarians to influence clients' decisions in treatment by using their power as medical professionals, even if doing so could partly damage the interests of the clients or patients. The significant correlations between the AAS scores and veterinary ethical decision making were found in this study, which implies that the attitude toward animals should be considered as one of the major factors in making ethical decisions in veterinary practice.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors associated with the experience of bullying victimization in school among elementary school students in the Jeju area. Methods : A total of 662 students were recruited from elementary schools for a school-based cross-sectional survey (age range : 11-12 years) in the Jeju area. This study used a self-reported questionnaire concerning the experience of being victimized by bullying, the Korean form of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) to assess depressive symptoms, and questions on sociodemographic characteristics, including school- and family-related factors. Results : The prevalence of bullying victimization in school among elementary school students was 10.0% (n=66). The factors associated with bullying victimization were lower socioeconomic status, lower than average academic achievement, more depressive symptoms, and family problems. Conclusion : This study not only indicates that bullying at school is a significant public health issue among elementary school students, but also confirms that children with family problems commonly exhibit bullying behaviors, which highlights the importance of considering family-related environmental factors when managing bullying victimization.

  • Interprofessional education (IPE) can promote high-quality patient care and good medical outcomes through teamwork among health professionals. However, there are no valid measurements to prove the effectiveness of IPE in Korea. This study aimed to develop and test a Korean version of the Self-efficacy for Interprofessional Experimental Learning Scale (SEIEL). The original SEIEL was translated into Korean by two experienced medical professors, and 368 questionnaires were collected from medical and nursing students (third and fourth year). To analyze the validity of the Korean version of the SEIEL, an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was conducted. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was used to evaluate reliability. Results from the exploratory factor analysis identified two functions: "interprofessional collaboration" and "interprofessional team evaluation." A significant cross-correlation was found between the two functions (r=0.690, p<0.001), with a Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ value of 0.932. The reliability and validity of the Korean version of the SEIEL was identified in this study. This tool can be helpful in measuring the effectiveness of IPE in Korea.

  • This study explored medical students' major research topics and research methods by analyzing 184 academic articles pertaining to the characteristics of medical students from 2007 to 2017. Results showed many papers dealing with medical students' emotional and cognitive aspects, student counseling, clinical practice education, and curriculum management. According to the medical education accreditation board, research trends were found mostly in the student and curriculum areas of learner characteristics, medical humanities, student counseling, clinical practice education, and curriculum management. Common research topics have been steadily increasing since the introduction of the evaluation accreditation standard in 2012. Medical students predominantly used quantitative research methods for the studies. In the future, it is necessary to ensure that research topics such as CQI, digital- and performance-based clinical practice, and convergent curriculum within the Fourth Industrial Revolution are being studied. In addition, it is crucial to investigate learners' unique, dynamic, and qualitative characteristics through qualitative and mixed methods.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of academic stress and self-control ability on temporomandibular disorder (TMD) of adolescents. Methods: Participants were 1,112 teenagers who were 1st grade students of middle and high school. After checking their academic stress and self-control ability through a self-administrated questionnaire, the students were examined their TMD by two trained dentists. We drew a comparison the level of their academic stress and self-control ability between the students with and without TMD. We divided them to four groups according to the level of academic stress and self-control. And we checked prevalence of TMD in each level. Results: The group of students with TMD was higher academic stress score level than the students without TMD (p<0.05). And they had lower self-control score level than the students without TMD (p<0.05). Even if they were under the same academic stress, the group of students with higher self-control score was less TMD prevalence than the students with lower score. Conclusions: Academic stress makes adolescents to increase TMD and high ability of self-control makes them to decrease it. And these tendencies are seemed to have a great influence on young male student.

Additionally, the chi-square test was used to explore whether differences in experimentation with risk behaviors exist relative to gender and schooling levels. Results: There were six major findings in this study: (a) a lower rate of lifetime and current cigarette use among female students compared to male students, (b) a substantial portion of heavy drinkers, (c) a higher rate of lifetime drug use among female students than among male students, (d) a higher prevalence of suicide ideation among female students than among male students, (e) substantial percentages of students who did not usually wear seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, or bicycle helmets, and (f) a substantial portion of students who were not involved in vigorous physical activities. Conclusions: Since a substantial portion of adolescents have been involved with diverse risk behaviors, it is urgent to implement effective intervention strategies to reduce the rates of these behaviors.

  • This study analyzes the role of the Sorting Hat in structuring the identity of the characters in the Harry Potter series written by J. K. Rowling. In the different stages of adolescence, one explores and re-establishes one's identity. One's sense of identity is determined by the commitments made regarding personal and social traits. However, it is difficult to establish a concrete identity formation process theory that is communicable to adolescents. In Harry Potter, the characters' identities are reflected upon the Sorting Hat and are continuously molded throughout the book. The Sorting Hat provides nurturing experiences based on temperament. Based primarily on their temperament, it sorts the students into four houses, each with their own distinct characteristics. Once sorted, the houses become the living and learning communities in which the students share the same dormitory and classes until their graduation. Within the community, the students seek connections, supportive relationships, and understanding within the group. The taking on of the group identity is an explanatory variable in the formation of individual identity. The Sorting Hat provides the students with stability and a safe boundary. After being sorted based on their temperament, the inexperienced and immature adolescents can explore different options under the guidance of the Hat before making a definite commitment. By presenting them with an appropriate environment (such as a mentor, friend, or family member), the Hat further shapes their identity and integrates the identity elements ascribed in the beginning. By providing experiences and interactions based on their unique temperament and environment, the Sorting Hat plays a crucial role in establishing the students' identities. The Sorting Hat can be an ideal model for finding one's identity during adolescence.
