Akabane virus is a cause of severe congenital defects, but adult animals show no signs of infection. In this study, congenital abnormalitis associated with Akabane virus infection in Korean native goat. The prevalence of serum neutralizing antibodies to Akabane virus in goat population was investigated, indicating that approximately 30% of goats in Korea were seropositive(36/120). The mother goats have the highest titers of neutralizing antibodies, as 1:128. And also there showed seropositive of Akabane virus in newborn fetus fluids. The necropsy results of newborn fetus visceral organs were appeared normal. These findings provide that Akabane virus is the ethiological agent of congenital abnormalitis and stillbirth. Our results suggest that goat in natural situations are part of the Akabane virus transmission cycle.
It's a case of the goat farm reared about 60 heads in Imsil county was outbreak Moniezia expensa infection. And 18 heads of less than 6 month olds goat were died. During the 2005 summer, morbidity and accumulative mortality were more than 60% and 30%, respectively less than 6 month young goat. Most young goat were suffer from diarrhea, severe weight losses, emaciations, and died. In necropsy, there were about 0.7-2.5m of 2-8 adult M expensa in the small intestinal lumen, swollen mesenteric lymph nodes. Slight hemorrhages were seen in lung and moderate hemorrhages were seen in mucous membrane of small intestine. Also various species (Trichostrongylus spp, Haemonchus spp, Eimeria spp) of parasite eggs were seen in fecal test. Pasteurella hemolytica was identified in lung by the API kit (Biomerieux Co. Ltd) for biochemical test. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) results, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, tyrosine, gentamycin, enrofloxacin, and norflocxacin were selected sensitive antibiotics.
Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) is a chronic and contagious disease of sheep and goats caused by Corynebacterium (C.) pseudotuberculosis. A four-year-old female Saanen dairy goat was submitted to the Animal Disease Diagnostic Center at National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service. The clinical signs of the goat were emaciation, abortion and quadriplegia. The multifocal nodules of lymph nodes were encapsulated and filled with whitish caseous contents on the cut surface. Histopathologically, lymph nodes displayed suppurative and necrotizing granulomas. Caseous necrosis was diffusely observed in the center of the lymph nodes. Gram positive bacilli were shown in the lesions. C. pseudotuberculosis was isolated and confirmed by the biochemical tests and PCR assay. Based on clinical signs, histopathological examination and bacterial isolation, we diagnosed this case as CLA. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CLA in a Saanen dairy goat in Korea.
Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a systemic disease of ruminants caused by a gamma herpesvirus, ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2). Four 1-year old goats (Capra hircus), which were infected with MCF virus, OvHV-2, by being housed together with MCF virus-infected seep, were referred with a I-month history of chronic dermatitis. On the other hand, MCF virus-negative goats, which were isolated for negative control, had not those kinds of skin problems. Examination of the affected goats revealed generalized alopecia, patchy erythema, and superficial erosions with histologic evidence of mural folliculitis. Fungal culture tests and external parasite tests with the scraping skin samples were negative. However, polymerase chain reaction revealed the existence of MCF virus DNAs in the lesion. These results suggested that MCF virus may induce mural folliculitis and alopecia in goat.
This study was designed to investigate the characterization of black goat meat and bone beverage containing honey of red ginseng. The crude proteins and moisture contents of black goat meat were higher than those of pork and beef, but the crude lipid content of black goat meat was lower than that of those. The potassium content of black goat meat was lower than that of chicken, but similar to the pork and beef. The sodium content of black goat meat was lower than that of chicken, pork and beef. The result of the sensory evaluation of black goat meat and bone beverage added honey with red ginseng by 25 panels, was that the beverages added $7.5\%\;and\;8.0\%$ honey with red ginseng were better than any other beverages. Thus, the results suggest that the black goat meat bone beverage added honey with red ginseng could be one of valuable drinks.
The aim of this study was to determine meat quality characteristics and fatty acid composition of Korean native black goats (KNBG) finished on intensive feeding of alfalfa (ALF) and conventional feeding of commercial concentrate pellets (CCP) with low-energy common grasses. Ten KNBG (12 months old) were divided into two groups and subjected to either ALF or CCP treatments. The goats were slaughtered after 6 months of feeding with experimental diets to investigate meat quality characteristics and fatty acid compositions of longissimus lumborum muscle. There were no significant differences in proximate chemical composition, collagen, or myoglobin content between ALF and CCP groups of goats. Meat color, water-holding capacity, or tenderness was not significantly different between the two groups either. However, proportions of monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids were significantly (p<0.05) different between the two groups. The proportion of oleic acid was significantly (p<0.05) higher in ALF goat whereas proportion of linoleic and arachidonic acids were significantly (p<0.05) higher in CCP goat. Results suggest that KNBG finished with intensive feeding of alfalfa could produce goat meat with desirable fatty acids for human diets.

This study was performed to investigate the best staining method for the somatic cell classification of dairy goat milk. Dairy goat milk samples, which were collected randomly from a dairy goat farm in Jeollanam-do, South Korea, were stained and analyzed with direct microscopic method, using 5 different staining methods; Wright's stain, Giemsa stain, Diff-quik stain, Newman's stain and Pyronin Y-Methyl Green stain, respectively. Among them, The Newman's staining was found to be the most rapid and effective method, for it required the shortest time for staining and provided the easiest way to classify somatic cells.
The hematologic values were measured from 64 healthy goats imported from Australia to obtain data about the hematologic values of Australian wild goat. In paper 32 goats imported in March called group 1, 32 goats imported in April called group 2. The result obtained are summarized as follows;, 1 Mean$\pm$SD values and ranges of red blood cell(RBC) were $17.8$\pm$3.0{\times}10^6/${mu}ell$ and 9.9-24.3{\times}10^6/${mu}ell$,$ of hemoglobin(Hb) content 13.8$\pm$1.3 g/㎗ and 10.0-16.1 g/㎗, of packed cell volume(PCV) 37.0$\pm$4.1% and 28.0-47.0%, of mean corpuscular volume(MCV) 21.3$\pm$3.3 fl and 16.4-37.2 fl, of mean corpuscular hemoglobin(MCH) 7.9$\pm$1.1 pg and 6.0-13.3 pg, of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC) 37. For purposes of substantiation of organizing measures on industrial processing of goat's and sheep's milk in Mongolia and the production of dairy products we have conducted the studied physico-chemical characteristics of the Mongolian goat's and sheep's milks especially to recognize amino acids, minerals and vitamins in the milk and compare with the Mongolian cow's milk. And also was studied fractional structure of goat's milk whey proteins.
A 3-years-old female Saanen dairy goat was admitted to the Teaching Animal Hospital at Chonnam National University with clinical signs of poor appetites, reddish darkness udder and bloody milk. She died one day after hospitalization, and Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the mammary gland and was confirmed by the PCR assay using a P. multocida-specific primer set. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of mastitis caused by P. multocida in Saanen dairy goat in Korea.
