Diaspora studies has become one of the fastest growing field in the humanities over the past several decades, and the use of term diaspora has been widening to include almost any population on the move. Diaspora literature not only mirrors but actively incorporates this new notion of diaspora with characters "at the threshold" navigating new territories and identities. Querying how diaspora studies intersects with theatre and performance, this paper attempts to probe how recent Korean American drama parallels and promotes diaspora studies' radical departure from traditional notions of identities and territories. For this purpose, this essay 1) examines theoretical affinities between diaspora studies and performance studies 2) investigates how Sung Rno's plays, Cleveland Raining and wAve, explore and embody multiple and evolving meanings of Korean diaspora on the stage 3) examines how theatre can create the third space that transcends both Korean and American nationalism and 4) speculates possibilities of reframing Asian American Studies as Asian diaspora studies. Korean American characters in Rno's play redirect diasporic identities, as their concern gradually moves from "where I come from" to "where I go to." Instead of remaining in the dark as a mere spectator, both Rno and his characters choose to be 'on' the stage where they can imagine, perform, and realize (however temporarily) "unimaginable community" by confronting their own social, political, and cultural ambivalence. Stage, the threshold between reality and fiction, Korea and America, and past and future, becomes their true 'home' where they incubate and precipitate "nation in transformation" that Yan Haiping argues for as "another transnational."
Most of the Korean diaspora who lived in Yunhaeju moved to Central Asia in 1937 following the policy of deportation of Russia. Uzbekistan is the representative place for Korean diaspora to have settled down in Central Asia at that time and mort Korean diaspora in Central Asia are living in Uzbekistan now. Korean diaspora have maintained a traditional way of living for 140 years without a deep relationship with Korea. This study examined the dwellings of the Korean diaspora of Uzbekistan in Central Asia by visiting their houses and conducting interviews. Gudle is the most traditional element of the Korean diaspora's house and it has been used as a place for gathering family members. 2) Korean diaspora's houses in Uzbekistan were built according to Russian and Uzbek style but most of the Korean diaspora's have a mixed style with traditional Korean elements of living.3) The changing process of planning and building codes of apartments in Uzbekistan is similar to that in other CIS nations and all of Russia. 4) Korean's food style is a mixture of Korean, Russian and Central Asian foods. Kimchi and Jang (bean paste) are essential for most Koreans and most Koreans are making these at home. 5) Most Koreans have maintained a good relationship with the Uzbek people and Koreans are very active in gelling along well with all. This enables them to exchange their culture eventually in various parts. This study could be the first step to supply basic information for the study of the Korean diaspora in Uzbekistan. Deeper research over a wider range is needed in Russia.

This study investigated Korean diaspora literature with the bilingual feature, which was published in a local language other than Korean, focusing on literature classification status in domestic library's materials. As a result of the investigation, domestic universities and public libraries that owned the diaspora literature materials were classifying the original work by the languages or focusing on the author's work. Nowadays, the Literature classification codes of KDC have on the language of the original work but no code on the author. Nevertheless, domestic libraries were classifying diaspora literature works by the author, not by the language of the original work, so that the same author's works were gathered in one place. This study proposes an option to classify "Korean national literature" that covers Korean diaspora literature and Korean literature into 810 of KDC to resolve the confusion in the classification of Korean diaspora literature. However, this option is a trial proposal for libraries with special needs for Korean diaspora literature classification, and further investigation and research will be necessary to apply this option.
Koreans had started moving to Yunhaju in Russia for escaping from the tyrannical rule and famine in 1860's in Korea. It had been veiled and nearly known about Korean's life there because of social and political situation of Russia until the Perestroyka. Moreover over, it is known that people of Central Asia prefer to set 'Ondol' recently as a very specific and expensive heating system. 3) Korean's food style in Yunhaju is the one mixed with Russian, Korean, and Central Asian foods. This study could be a first step to supply for a basic information for studying of Korean Diaspora in Russia and it is needed to take more deep research in other areas in Russia.
This study examines the dwellings of the Korean diaspora in Maritime Provinces of Russia, and Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan of Central Asia to find the gist of the residence transformed as Korean traditional residence culture to accept Russian foreign culture. Through the examination, transformation process of the dwellings of the Korean diaspora was found as follows: - 1st Period(1864-1937): The Korean diaspora who Immigrated to Maritime Provinces of Russia built traditional houses of Korean style and few of them lived in Russian style houses. - 2nd Period(1937-1955): The Koreans who immigrated to Central Asia from Maritime Provinces under compulsion built 'ground house' by digging the earth and installed gudeul which is a traditional Korean heating system and roofed with reed. - 3rd period(1955-1991): The Koreans built straight lined '-' shape houses with two or three rooms wherein most of them were installed with gudeul to heat the room. Around the 1940s as they economically got well, the Koreans started to build houses with Russian style with one or two rooms with gudeul or a separate building with gudeul. - 4th period(1991-present): Houses of the 3rd period are still used by being enlarged or remodeled with less use of gudeul which is well reflected on Ujeong-maul village in Russia Maritime Provinces. As can be found above, the dwellings of the Korean diaspora in Russia Maritime Provinces and Central Asia are on the process of being transformed into Russian style to adapt to Russian culture.
Koreans were started moving to Yunhaju in Russia for escaping from tyrannical rule and famine in 1860's in Korea. Social and political situation of Russia were made it very hard to get to know about Korean's life there so far. But it was known that Korean Diaspora has been kept traditional way of living in without contacts between Korea for 140 years. This study examined the dwellings of Korean Diaspora in Yunhaju through reviewing related documents and records firstly and had a time to visit places which Koreans lived since 1860's for example Posyet(equation omitted), Suifen(equation omitted), Ussuriisk(equation omitted), Vladivostok(equation omitted), Partizansk(equation omitted) and took interviews with Koreans who lived there pre 1930's. Results of research were as following : 1) A first place to settle down for Koreans in Yunhaju was Posye(equation omitted) and scattered as time goes by far away from there. 2) Koreans were helping each other for living and they had their own self managing organizations in village there. 3) The villages which was made in Yunhaju by Koreans in the beginning were similar to traditional ones in Korea. 4) It was verified that dwellings which was built by Koreans in Yunhaju were similar to ones in north area in Korea. At that time lots of Korean Diaspora came from north part and they kept their own traditional way of building houses there for a long time. 5) Korean Diaspora have been kept traditional heating system ‘Ondol’ in their various types of houses until now in Yunhaju. Moreover, it is known that Russians prefer to set ‘Ondol’ in their houses recently as a very special and expensive heating system. This study would be a very good opportunity to standing out Korean history of housing in Yunhaju as well as evaluating their identification as Koreans. For this, it is needed to take more deep research in specific areas which could see more various types of housing and could compare ones between two countries.

According to the research results, which consists of a total of 48 scenes, is based on the assumption that the sea and Japan and Korea between the sea are the space of memory, and emphasizes that Itami Jun, who had to live as a borderliner and a stranger is disengaged from the borders of nationalities, territories, and countries. In particular, the story of Jun Itami set the sea as a diachronic space(sites of memory) that penetrates the past and present and explores his diaspora identity. The sites of memory of Jun Itami reconstructed in can be said to be a memory space that makes Yoo Dong-ryong more firmly aware of his diaspora identity as a Korean.
