  • To investigate the hormetic effect of the low dose ${\gamma}-ray$, soybean(Glycine max L.) seeds of three cultivars (Hwangkeumkong, Bansakong, S900 cv.) were irradiated with the dose of 0.5∼20.0 Gy and cultivated in the experimental field. The hormetic effects of the low dose ${\gamma}-ray$ on the growth of field experiment were different from each cultivar, that is, more effective in the S900 cultivar of black seedcoat color than in the Hwangkeumkong and Bangsakong of yellow ones. The germination rate of S900 cultivar increased about 30% in the 0.5Gy irradiated group compared with that of the control. The plant height of the 4.0Gy irradiated group in both Bangsakong and S900 cultivar increased 15% more than that of the control. Grain yield and the number of pod in 1.0 Gy and 4.0 Gy irradiated group of S900 cultivar and that of 2.0 Gy irradiated group of Hwangkeumkong increased 25 and 35% on the average, respectively.

  • 'Joseong', a winter forage triticale cultivar (X Triticosecale Wittmack), was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2010. The cultivar 'Joseong' was selected from the cross FAHAD_5/RHINO1R.1D 5+10 5D'5B'//FAHAD_5 by CIMMYT (Mexico) in 1992. Subsequent generations were handled in pedigree selection program at Mexico from 1993 to 1998, and a line 'CTSS92Y-A-4Y-0M-5Y-0B' was selected for earliness and good agronomic characteristics. After preliminary and advance yield test in Korea for 2 years, the line designated as a line name of 'Iksan26'. The 'Iksan26' was subsequently evaluated for earliness and forage yield in 7 different locations such as Jeju, Iksan, Cheongwon, Yesan, Naju, Daegu, and Jinju from 2008 to 2010 and finally named as 'Joseong'. The cultivar 'Joseong' has characteristics of dark green leaf, yellow culm and spike, and large grain of yellowish brown color. The heading date of cultivar 'Joseong' was April 24, which was 5 days earlier than that of check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. It showed better tolerance or resistance to lodging, wet injury, powdery mildew, and leaf rust than those of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. The average forage dry matter yield of cultivar 'Joseong' at milk-ripe stage was 14.5 MT $ha^{-1}$, which was lower than 16.5 MT $ha^{-1}$ of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. The silage quality of 'Joseong' (5.3%) was lower to the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' (6.0%) in crude protein content, while was 2.1% superior to the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' (61.9%) in TDN (total digestible nutrients). It showed 5.1 MT $ha^{-1}$ of grain yield, which was 40% higher than that of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' (3.65 MT $ha^{-1}$). This cultivar is recommended for fall sowing crop in the area where daily minimum mean temperatures are averaged higher than $-10^{\circ}C$ in January, and as a winter crop using whole crop forage before planting rice in around Korea.

  • We investigated the quality of 48 cultivar in 5 types, most popularly used in Korea golf courses. Only brown patch disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG1-1 was occurred naturally. While disease was developed seriously into tall fescue cultivar in spring time and into bentgrass cultivar in fall time, respectively, however, among species were not significantly different. Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass cultivar had higher chlorophyll contents in November and there were also significantly different between cultivar of tall fescue, kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue species. Turfgrass color also showed significant difference between grass species. Perennial ryegrass has the highest value of turf leaf color, followed by kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue species. Significant differences among cultivar were found in kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and fine fescue. Although fresh weight of turfgrass was not statistically different between grass species, root length was significantly different between species. Tall fescue species had the longest root length. Fresh weight showed differences among cultivar in kentucky bluegrass, bentgrass and tall fescue species. Based on our results, growth and grass quality showed large differences among cultivar and each turfgrass species.

  • Cultivar parameter calibration can be affected by the reliability of the input data to a crop growth model. In South Korea, two sets of weather stations, which are included in the automated synoptic observing system (ASOS) or the automatic weather system (AWS), are available for preparation of the weather input data. The objectives of this study were to estimate the cultivar parameter using those sets of weather data and to compare the uncertainty of these parameters. The cultivar parameters of CERES-Rice model for Shindongjin cultivar was calibrated using the weather data measured at the weather stations included in either ASO S or AWS. The observation data of crop growth and management at the experiment farms were retrieved from the report of new cultivar development and research published by Rural Development Administration. The weather stations were chosen to be the nearest neighbor to the experiment farms where crop data were collected. The Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method was used to calibrate the cultivar parameters for 100 times, which resulted in the distribution of parameter values. O n average, the errors of the heading date decreased by one day when the weather input data were obtained from the weather stations included in AWS compared with ASO S. In particular, reduction of the estimation error was observed even when the distance between the experiment farm and the ASOS stations was about 15 km. These results suggest that the use of the AWS stations would improve the reliability and applicability of the crop growth models for decision support as well as parameter calibration.

  • Rye is cultivated on about 30,000ha domestically for forage and green-manure production in Korea. 'Daegokgreen' has been developed as a good quality rye cultivar for forage and green-manure, which was doubled-chromosome by colchicine treatment of diploid rye cultivar 'Gogu' in 2010. By the colchicine treatment with 0.05% for 12 hours at $2^{nd}$ leaf stage of 'Gogu', 31 tetraploid plants were obtained and they produced 2,470 seeds with 135 spikes. There was 4.4 in the number of spikes per plant, 18.3 in grain number per spike, and 37.6 g in the1,000-grain weight. The heading date of 'Daegokgreen' was April 11, which was two days later on average compared with 'Gogu'. The biomass (fresh weight) of 'Daegokgreen' was 3,701kg, which was similar to 'Gogu'. The average crude protein content of 'Daegokgreen' was 8.9%, which was 1.0% point higher than 'Gogu'. 'Daegokgreen' was found to be strong resistant to winter-kill and can be adapted to before maize cultivation.
