  • For the seismic design of bridges in Korea classified as the low to moderate seismic zones, the design concepts provided in the Standard Specification for Highway Bridges, Division I-A: Seismic Design, are adopted, which is basically developed for the strong seismic zones by AASHITO. Accordingly, the design procedures provided for the low to moderate seismic zones are simplified too much to fulfill the purpose of the seismic design. In this paper the design procedures given for the low to moderate seismic zones in the Standard are summarized and discussed in view of the seismic design purpose. From the discussion results some revisions are proposed as conclusions for the reasonable a, pp.ication of the Standard for bridges located in the low to moderate seismic zones.

  • As the computer related technology evolves a study for a practical use of real structure as well as its hteory for optimum design has been greatly advanced. But the study on optimum design of pre-stressed concrete beam(PSC-beam) bridge for the construction of national roads and highways in Korea is not sufficient. Since a standard section for the PSC-beam is proposed, it is practically used in designing the PSC-beam. It is noticed that the section using the current standard PSC-beam design to be an over-designed with its surplus safety factor. Therefore, it is necessary to consider economical PSC-beam section which automatically satisfies all requirement of design specifications. Thus, in this study, the optimum design methods of PSC-beam are carried out using the gradient-based search method and global search method. As a result of the optimum design method, it was confirmed that the design of PSC-beam has a serious properties to non-linearity and discontinuity. And the section that in economical and efficinet design methods than the current standard design method is proposed.

  • The IMO manoeuvrability standard was established for preventing sea accidents such as collisions and strandings due to the lack of manoeuvrability. The standard of ship manoeuvrability enforced by resolution MSC.137(76) has been applied to vessels of 100m or more in length and all chemical tankers and gas carriers regardless of the length, which were constructed on or after 1 July 1994. The IMO manoeuvrability standard is able to be divided into three kinds as followings; (1) Turning capability standard: Estimated values in design stage are to be certified by turning cir치e test q the actual vessel (2) Course keeping quality standard: Estimated values in design stage are to be certified by 10 deg. and 20 deg. zig-zag tests of the actual vessel. (3) Shortest stopping distance standard: Estimated value in design stage is to be certified by the shortest stopping distance tested by the actual vessel. In this paper, the authors verified the criteria of IMO manoeuvrability standard comparing them with the values resulted from sea trial tests of various kinds q actual vessels and examined separately the validity of all criteria of the standard.

  • In order to solve housing shortage, an apartment has been built and supplied in large quantities in Korea. As such a result, the apartment became a typical housing type in Korea. However, the housing became vulnerable to accommodate rapidly changing life-style & life-cycle of koreans and was lost the concept of Korean traditional housing for inheriting and developing Korean traditional culture. Therefore, this paper aims at eliciting of design elements for development on standard model of long-life housing with durability & flexibility based on data derived from housing consumers's questionnaire survey and expert's opinion surveys. We expect that the standard model developed on the basis of open building applying support & infill elements will be used as a standard model for planning future long-life housing with capacity.

  • There are more than 22,300 small streams distributed nationwide in Korea, and they have various runoff characteristics depending on basin area, topography and land use. For small stream disaster management, establishing detailed design standards suitable for the small streams is important, but most of the formulas currently proposed in the small stream design standard are based on the river design standard aimed at national and local rivers or foreign river design standards. The design-width is an important factor in determining the size of the stream. It is determined by using design-flood discharges or more variables such as design-flood discharges, basin area, slop, etc in the small stream design standard. This study collected various characteristics information such as the design-flood discharges, basin area, river length and river slop, and design-width values from 4,073 small streams distributed in 12 cities and provinces in Korea to suggest the appropriated design-width formula. This study developed two design-width formulas by using the regression analysis which one is using the design-flood discharges and the other is using various variables such as the design-flood discharges, basin area, river length and river slope collected from the small steams. It is expected that both equations developed in here can be used for small stream disaster management, such as improving small stream design standard or establishing a comprehensive small stream maintenance plan.

  • The appropriate area for human's most basic living space is an important factor. Therefore, the 'minimum housing standard' is a very important factor to ensure a minimum quality of living space for human life. In Korea, however, the importance of the 'minimum housing standard' has been neglected for about 20 years. Even in Korea, the 'minimum housing standard' has become an nominal existence. In other countries, studies have long been conducted on the minimum housing standards, but studies have shown that studies on the minimum housing standard are not actively occurring in Korea. The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current status of the 'minimum housing standard' in Korea and to explore the direction of future research. The study included a total of 29 researches commissioned by the Korea Academic Research Institute (KCI). To ensure the objectivity and reliability of the analysis, analyzed year of research, field of research, method of research, contents of research. Through this study, it is possible to grasp the tendency of previous studies on 'minimum housing standard' in Korea and it is meaningful to increase the usability of 'minimum housing standard' in residential planning. It is also expected that future research on 'minimum housing standards' will be able to present the direction of the field to be developed.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to compare old standard EN 954-1 and new standard EN ISO 13849-1 through case study and provide necessity of adaptation of EN ISO 13849-1 in Korea. Background: International and EU harmonized standard EN ISO 13849 "safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control system" is classified into Part 1: General principles for design and Part 2: Validation. EN ISO 13849-1 standard was introduced in Official Journal of the European Union on September 8, 2009 as harmonized standard, and old standard EN 954-1 was withdrawn on December 31, 2011. So, EU decided to use of EN ISO 13849-1 standard forcibly from January 1, 2012 for safety of machinery. New machines need to be CE marked if they are to be placed on the market in the European Economic Area(EEA), Switzerland or Turkey, and Korean machine builder should apply EN ISO 3849-1 standard for safety of machinery accordingly. However, current Korean Safety Certification system(KCs mark) for dangerous machinery is not referred to EN ISO 13849-1 standard as safety standard. There is a need of research for adaptation of EN ISO 13849-1 standard in Korea as safety standards for new design of safety-related control system which use mostly electronic components. Method: Five case studies of representative designs for safety-related control system in accordance with EN 954-1were selected according to safety category from B to 4. And these five representative designs were tried to change new design in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1 standard. The results of comparison were analyzed in aspect of economy and technical complexity. Results: The results showed that EN ISO 13849-1 provided quantitative method of application and it enabled designers to create safety-related control systems that require fewer components and less wiring, with many of the components being to a lower specification and, therefore, less costly. Conclusion: EN ISO 13849-1 standard is good for electronic safety-related control systems compare to EN 954-1. By considering the importance of application of EN ISO 13849-1 and benefits, the application of EN ISO 13849-1 as safety standard for safety of machinery is urgent in Korea. Application: The results of comparing EN 954-1 and EN ISO 13849-1 standard might help to determine the adaptation of EN ISO 13849-1 standard for safety of industrial machinery in Korea.

  • As the result of investigating domestic interior design (interior architecture) field-related laws, it was found that interior design (interior architecture) is not recognized as in independent area due to weak classification standards by Korean standard industrial classification and job classification. Korean standard industrial classification is applied as a standard setting limits to applicable targets and industrial fields for laws related to general administration and industrial policy other than various statistic purposes. Also, the standard industrial classifications regarding the industry field determines the laws or applicable tax rates, government support and such according to the classification, and thus is very important. Moreover, interior architecture field is largely different from general architecture due to specialization and distinct characteristics, but due to the comprehensive concept of architecture industry regulations, it is considered the proper assessment for the professionalism is not conducted. Also, interior architecture field has irrational contradictions that is not independent with a clear definition and industry field classification not only in legal system and trade customs. Therefore, The following is proposed as the plan to strengthen the domestic/international competitiveness and system improvements for interior architecture. (1)interior design (interior architecture) must be amended as an industrial classification that can coexist with architecture. (2)interior design (interior architecture) must be amended as a job classification that can coexist with architecture. (3)Among the design tasks of an architect, approval for the design task field of interior architecture field must be legislated. -In architect design standard contract (the existing architecture design task scope and quality standard table) of a structure, among the tasks by request of the owner, (1)interior design tasks shall be legislated. It should be legislated so that interior design (interior architecture) majors can be included as well. (4)The task field of interior design that coexists with design must be amended. (5)National contract law - among contract method by negotiation, specialty item must be vitalized.
