With respect to the effects of types of knowledge on human diagnostic performance, the results of several experiments claimed that training with procedural knowledge is more effective than training with principle knowledge. However, more useful results would be attained by investigating when and how the principles of system dynamics is valuable for diagnosis. Accordingly, we conducted an experiment to reevaluate the value of principle knowledge in two problem situations. A simulator system, named DLD, to diagnose an electronic device was created. It is a context-free digital logic circuit which includes forty-one gates of three basic types. The experiment investigated the effects of principle knowledge over common procedural knowledge. The experimental results showed that the effects of principle knowledge is dependent on the complexity of diagnostic situations. This adds up on experimental evidence against the presumed ineffectiveness of principle knowledge and forward reasoning in fault diagnosis. The results also suggest the source of the usefulness of principle knowledge.
Many organizations implement knowledge management initiates by developing knowledge management systems. This study aims at investigating knowledge sharing behaviors in a knowledge management system and identifying factors affecting such behaviors. To do this, we defined knowledge sharing behaviors in a knowledge management system as registration and view of knowledge at a system. Based on this definition, we established a research model by identifying seven factors affecting both behaviors as independent variables: Learning orientation, Pressure to share knowledge, Top management support, Reward for knowledge sharing, Level of experience in IT, System quality, and Knowledge quality. The 14 hypotheses derived from a research model were tested by a correlation analysis and a multiple regression analysis with data from 165 respondents of the 21 organizations which implemented knowledge management initiatives. As results, both of knowledge registration and knowledge review were strongly affected by the learning-orientedness of an organization. Finally, we discussed results and limitations of this study.
Knowledge transfer among employees integrates individual knowledge scattered within a firm, thus increases organizational effectiveness. In particular, the role of knowledge broker, which enables knowledge sharing across multiple teams or subunits, is critical for the success of knowledge management. This study classified the types of knowledge broker that facilitates knowledge flows among team, and examined the influences of various intra- and inter-team social networks. Survey responses from 128 employees of four R&D teams were gathered and analyzed using partial least square structural equation modeling. The results of analysis showed that all types of inter-team networks(i.e., emotional closeness network, frequency of interaction network, and perceived expertise network) had significant influences on related knowledge brokerage behaviors. In case of intra-team networks, only the emotional closeness network showed significant influence. These results proved the necessity of managing various types of intra- and inter-team networks to encourage knowledge brokerage behaviors within a firm.
An expert system executes the inference, based on the knowledge of specific domain. the reliability on the results of inference depends upon both the consistency and accuracy of knowledge. This is the reason why expert system requires the facilities which can practice an access to the various kinds of knowledge and maintain the consistency and accuracy of knowledge an maintain the consistency and accuracy of knowledge. This paper is to implement an expert system permitting an access of declarative and procedural knowledge in the knowledge base and in the data base. This paper is also to implement a knowledge acquisition system which adds the knowledge a only if its accuracy and consistency are maintained, after verifying the potential errors such as contradiction, redundancy, circulation, non-reachable rule and non-lined rule. In consequence, the expert system realizes a good access to the various sorts of knowledge and increases the reliability on the results of inference. The knowledge acquisition system contributes tro strengthening man-machine interface that enables users to add the knowledge easily to the knowledge base.
The New Way of Working (NWOW) is changing the world in which we work today. The principles of NWOW are based on freedom of time and place to work, and steering on output (results) instead of input (presence). As NWOW is a relatively new phenomenon, research on the effect of NWOW on knowledge sharing in organizations is scarce. In this research two multiple-case studies were performed to investigate the effect of the New Way of Working on knowledge. In the first study (A) different knowledge sharing scenarios were used at organizations that were in the process of implementing NWOW. This provided the opportunity to compare the sharing of knowledge between 'NWOW workers' and employees that still worked in the traditional way (non-NWOW workers). In total 216 scenario results were evaluated to determine differences in channel choice between the traditional and new work environment. For the second study (B) a Knowledge Sharing Framework was developed, based on the theories of Nonaka and Alavi & Leidner. This framework was used to determine the type of knowledge shared, e.g. tacit or explicit knowledge, in 84 situations. Additionally, to measure the level of NWOW adoption, a NWOW Analysis Monitor was used. The results show that NWOW workers use more different communication channels than traditional workers. When knowledge workers become more mobile, they will exchange knowledge less explicit (codified) and more tacit (personalized), use less face-to-face communication, but more video calls and e-mail. The adoption of the principles of NWOW seems to have a balancing effect on the knowledge that is shared in a tacit and explicit way, which in the view of Scheepers et al. is an effective knowledge sharing strategy. The research results show organizations need to realize that the New World of Working is affecting the way knowledge is shared. Missing out on this development may result in the loss of important knowledge and impact the operation of organizations.
Comtemporary firms need capability of acquiring external knowledge and internalizing it to cope with environmental fluctuation. The paper analyzes the impact of absorptive capacity, an ability to recognize and utilize external knowledge, on knowledge acquisition of the firm, and examines the role of trust in the knowledge acquisition process. Data were collected from 84 domestic companies that had adopted ERP packages. The results indicate that prior experiences of knowledge acquisition, communication mechanism, and conflict resolution mechanism affect knowledge acquisition positively. Among those independent variables, communication mechanism and conflict resolution mechanism significantly and positively related with trust. Trust is, in turn, positively associated with knowledge acquisition. Meanwhile, previous knowledge base and prior relationship with the knowledge provider do not affect knowledge acquisition. Further, the results provide evidence that trust plays a mediating role between other absorptive capacity factors and knowledge acquisition.
Purpose - Aviation control, navigation, and aircraft control in the air transportation area are very specialized. Each part is in progress for safety, efficiency, automation, and further. On the other hand co-work among each part including knowledge sharing has been inattentive for many reasons. The purpose of this research is to show how practicians and professionals in the air transportation area perceive the issue of knowledge sharing and to recall the necessity of knowledge sharing in the area. And we try to find ways to activate the knowledge sharing in the area. Research design, data, methodology - For the research, we inquired into whether practicians and professionals think knowledge sharing can effect safe aviation positively or not and what steps are necessary to activate knowledge sharing in the area. We adopted survey method using questionnaires for current practicians and interview for specialists. The survey and interview results were analyzed using regression analysis and AHP method. The interview for specialists and analyzing the results using AHP was to investigate what are the precedence factors to activate the knowledge sharing. Results - First, practicians perceive that knowledge sharing will affect aviation safe positively. Second objective knowledges such as, tower air traffic control procedure of aviation control area, flight principle and structure of aircraft control area, instrument landing system of navigation area, for knowledge sharing of each area were identified. Also the precedence factors such as, knowledge absorbability of personal factor, personal expectation of result of expectation factor, leadership of management of Structure factor, method of knowledge spread of application factor for knowledge sharing were found. Conclusions - Knowledge sharing for practicians and professionals in the aviation area is very important especially from the perspective of safety. However, for various many reasons including the environment of each special area that focusing on their own area, knowledge sharing has not been emphasized. We found that practicians in the area feel that knowledge sharing is necessary and helpful. For it, each practician's active participation is the most important and many ways such as chatting room to share knowledge are to be developed. And the organization culture should be changed to encourage knowledge sharing.
Despite the growing emphasis on the importance of knowledge exchange among supply chain participants, few companies have fully exploited the knowledge resources held by their supply chain partners. Among many reasons for this phenomenon, recent literature on inter-firm knowledge exchange identifies knowledge complementarities between the supply channel partners as an important determinant of knowledge exchange. Firms participating in a supply chain are likely to exchange partners' complementary knowledge. In order to extract value from them, it is important to recognize the difference between the potential value and the implementation of this potential value. However, the literature fails to distinguish between potential knowledge complementarities and implemented knowledge complementarities. In order to realize the value of potential knowledge complementarities, knowledge should be exchanged and effectively integrated in the supply channel. Further, investigating inter-firm knowledge exchange from both partners' perspectives is important especially when there are interdependencies between the channel partners. The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of potential knowledge complementarities on knowledge exchange in buyer-supplier relationships by looking at both partners' perspectives. This research also includes trust in partner's competence and inter-organizational information systems (IOIS) as they are relevant when the complementary knowledge flows between organizations. The data required for this field study was collected from 70 buyers and their suppliers in three multinational enterprises in two different industries (Automobile manufacturing and Telecommunication services) headquartered in Korea. The results indicate that potential knowledge complementarities between buyer and supplier do not directly influence knowledge exchange, but indirectly through trust in partner's competence. And the results indicate that competence-based trust and IOIS have direct effects on knowledge exchange. Empirical results also show that IOIS moderates the relationship between potential knowledge complementarities and knowledge exchange. This study is a first attempt to empirically verify the theoretical model about potential knowledge complementarities and to investigate the impact of potential knowledge complementarities on interfirm knowledge exchange. From a theoretical perspective, this study not only clarifies the distinction between potential knowledge complementarities and implemented knowledge complementarities, but also develops an instrument to measure the concept of potential knowledge complementarities in the context of operational and planning knowledge in a supply chain. Further, we develop a theoretical framework suggesting that potential knowledge complementarities of partners in a supply chain affect knowledge exchange directly and indirectly through competence-based trust. The findings from this study have some managerial implications for practicing managers as well. First, buyers should search for suppliers that have potential complementary knowledge, which can be integrated to create synergy through interfirm knowledge exchange. Furthermore, firms must develop mechanisms to identify potential complementary knowledge of partners. Second, firms should continue their endeavor to develop their own unique knowledge so that their knowledge can benefit the entire supply channel. Finally, trust among supply chain partners turns out to be an important factor for interfirm knowledge exchange. Therefore, effective management for engendering trustworthy buyer-supplier relationships should receive appropriate attention from managers.
The purpose of this research is to investigate success factors of knowledge management in Korea companies. The research scheme was experimented through a questionnaire survey answered by 87 companies. The research model was composed of five groups : 1) CEO support and business strategics, 2) organization culture 3) information technology characteristic of knowledge workers 4) a reward and performance measurement 5) knowledge management system. The results of this research indicated that the CEO support and organization culture are important factors for knowledge activities. The information technology characteristic of knowledge workers and a reward have small effects for knowledge activities. Manufacturing companies and non-manufacturing companies need different knowledge management strategies. The results of this study will be helpful for the success implementation of knowledge management in Korean companies.
The knowledge management is increasingly an important strategic weapon for sustaining competitive advantage of firms. Firms are undertaking knowledge management initiatives and making significant investments. However, there is relatively little empirical support for the impact of knowledge management on performance of firms. Understanding of the impact of knowledge management, this paper explores how knowledge management strategy influences firms' market value. We examine this issue using event study methodology and evaluate the cumulative abnormal returns for knowledge management strategy announced by firms from 1998 to 2002. The results show that firms' announcements of knowledge management strategy are positively related with firms' market value. Specially, dynamic style-which emphasizes both (i) knowledge reusability through information technologies and (ii) knowledge sharing through informal discussions among employees-has higher performance. This outcome presents empirical support to argument that the emphasis on both tacit and explicit knowledge results in better market value.
