  • Our previous study used a bar-type reference mirror to measure the relative distance to the target surface. The target measurement accuracy was required to $1{\mu}m$ PV for aspheric optical surface up to 1m in diameter. Earlier system suffers from the reference surface deformation when the measuring part moves. In order to reduce the deformation, measuring part and the reference part separated from each order in the new design. This system utilizes a kinematic support assembly using invar flexure to minimize the reference surface deformation under gravity and vibration. The surface deformation requirement of reference mirror is defined as of $0.2{\mu}m$ under gravity and 40Hz vibration. The finite element results, shows reference mirror deformation of $0.164{\mu}m$. The first resonance mode was computed to analysis 46.05Hz for reference part and 43.44Hz for measuring part. Thesis satisfies the frequency requirement.

  • One of the major issues in inertial and magnetic measurement unit (IMMU)-based 3D orientation estimation is compensation for magnetic disturbances in magnetometer signals, as the magnetic disturbance is a major cause of inaccurate yaw estimation. In the proposed approach, a kinematic constraint is used to provide a measurement equation in addition to the accelerometer and magnetometer signals to mitigate the disturbance effect on the orientation estimation. Although a Kalman filter (KF) is the most popular framework for IMMU-based orientation estimation, a complementary filter (CF) has its own advantages over KF in terms of mathematical simplicity and ease of implementation. Accordingly, this paper introduces a quaternion-based CF with a constraint-combined correction equation. Furthermore, the weight of the constraint relative to the magnetometer signal is adjusted to adapt to magnetic environments to optimally deal with the magnetic disturbance. In the results of our validation experiments, the average and maximum of yaw errors were $1.17^{\circ}$ and $1.65^{\circ}$ from the proposed CF, respectively, and $8.88^{\circ}$ and $14.73^{\circ}$ from the conventional CF, respectively, showing the superiority of the proposed approach.

  • Objective To replace camera-based three-dimensional motion analyzers which are widely used to analyze body movements and gait but are also costly and require a large dedicated space, this study evaluates the validity and reliability of inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based systems by analyzing their spatio-temporal and kinematic measurement parameters. Methods The investigation was conducted in three separate hospitals with three healthy participants. IMUs were attached to the abdomen as well as the thigh, shank, and foot of both legs of each participant. Each participant then completed a 10-m gait course 10 times. During each gait cycle, the hips, knees, and ankle joints were observed from the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes. The experiments were conducted with both a camera-based system and an IMU-based system. The measured gait analysis data were evaluated for validity and reliability using root mean square error (RMSE) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analyses. Results The differences between the RMSE values of the two systems determined through kinematic parameters ranged from a minimum of 1.83 to a maximum of 3.98 with a tolerance close to 1%. The results of this study also confirmed the reliability of the IMU-based system, and all of the variables showed a statistically high ICC. Conclusion These results confirmed that IMU-based systems can reliably replace camera-based systems for clinical body motion and gait analyses.

  • Kinematic calibration enhances absolute accuracy by compensating for the fabrication tolerances and installation errors. Effectiveness of calibration procedures depends greatly on the measurements performed. While the Cartesian postures are measured completely, all of the geometric parameters can be identified to their true values. With partial pose measurements, however, few geometric parameters may not be identifiable and effectiveness of the calibration results may vary significantly within the workspace. QR decomposition of the identification Jacobian matrix can reveal the non-identifiable parameters. Selecting postures for measurement is also an important issue for efficient calibration procedure. Typically, the condition number of the identification Jacobian is minimized to find optimum postures. This paper investigates identifiable parameters and optimum postures for four different calibration procedures - measuring postures completely with inverse kinematic residuals, measuring postures completely with forward kinematics residuals, measuring only the three position components, and restraining the mobility of the end-effector using a constraint link. The study is performed for a six degree-of-freedom fully parallel HexaSlide type paralle manipulator, HSM. Results verify that all parameters are identifiable with complete posture measurements. For the case of position measurements, one and for the case of constraint link, three parameters were found non-identifiable. Optimal postures showed the same trend of orienting themselves on the boundaries of the search space.

  • This paper presents a multiple target tracking system using target feature information. In the proposed system, the state of target is defined as its kinematic as well as feature : the kinematic includes a location and a velocity; the feature contains the image correlation between a prior target and a current measurement. The feature information is used for generating the validation matrix and association probability of joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) algorithm. Through the Kalman filter, the target kinematic is updated. Then the tracking information is cycled by the track management algorithm. The system has been evaluated using the images obtained from Electro-Optics/ InfraRed (EO/IR) sensor. It is verified that the proposed system can reduce the complexity burden of JPDA process and can enhance the track maintenance rate.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the measurement of shoulder joint motions using an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Methods: For this study, 33 participants (32 females and 1 male) were recruited. The subjects were passively positioned with the shoulder placed at specific angles using a goniometer (shoulder flexion $0^{\circ}-170^{\circ}$, abduction $0^{\circ}-170^{\circ}$, external rotation $0^{\circ}-90^{\circ}$, and internal rotation $0^{\circ}-60^{\circ}$ angles). Kinematic data on the shoulder joints were simultaneously obtained using IMU three-dimensional (3D) angular measurement (MyoMotion) and photographic measurement. Test-retest reliability and concurrent validity were examined. Results: The MyoMotion system provided good to very good relative reliability with small standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change (MDC) values from all three planes. It also presented acceptable validity, except for some of shoulder flexion, shoulder external rotation, and shoulder abduction. There was a trend for the shoulder joint measurements to be underestimated using the IMU 3D angular measurement system compared to the goniometer and photo methods in all planes. Conclusion: The IMU 3D angular measurement provided a reliable measurement and presented acceptable validity. However, it showed relatively low accuracy in some shoulder positions. Therefore, using the MyoMotion measurement system to assess shoulder joint angles would be recommended only with careful consideration and supervision in all situations.

  • An automatic guidance system based upon two position-measurement systems was designed to record where the tractor traveled and to guide the tractor along the predetermined path. An algorithm, using the kinematic behavior of tractor movement, was developed to determine the steering angle to reduce lateral position error. The algorithm was based upon constant travel speed, constant steering rate, and zero slip angles of the tractor wheels. The algorithm was evaluated through use of computer simulation and verified in field experiments. Results showed that the distance interval between position measurements was an important factor in guidance system performance. The position-measurement error of the guidance system must be less than 5 cm to be acceptably precise for field operations. An algorithm based upon a variable steering rate might improve the stability of the guidance system. More accurate measurement of tractor position and yaw angle, and faster error processing are required to improve the field performance of the guidance system.

  • This paper presents a new method for automatically calibrating robot link (Kinematic) parameters during the process of estimating motion parameters of a moving object. The motion estimation is performed based on stereo cameras mounted on the end-effector of a robot manipulator. This approach significantly differs from other calibration approaches in that the calibration is achieved by simply observing the motion of the moving object (without resorting to any other external calibrating tools) at numerous and widely varying joint-angle configurations. A differential error model, which expresses the measurement errors of a robot in terms of robot link parameter errors and motion parameters, is developed. And then a measurement equation representing the true measurement values is derived. By estimating the above two kinds of parameters minimizing the difference between the measurement equations and the true moving pattern, the calibration of the robot link parameters and the estimation of the motion parameters are accomplished at the same time.
