  • Objectives: This study presents two cases of patients with post-stroke global aphasia who were treated with scalp acupuncture with electrical stimulation.Method: The two patients were treated by scalp acupuncture with electrical stimulation six times a week. The degree of aphasia was measured via the Korean version of the western aphasia battery (K-WAB).Results: After treatment, aphasia was improved in both cases (autism-spectrum quotient [AQ] scores increased from 13.7 to 37.1 and from 4.1 to 18.4 in the two patients). Conclusion: Based on the results of these two cases, scalp acupuncture could be effective in treating post-stroke global aphasia.

  • Objective: In this case report, we address the case of a 47-year-old man with anemia due to chronic kidney disease. Methods: A patient was treated with Korean medicine including an herbal medication, Shipjeondaebo-tang. We evaluated the improvement of symptoms by biochemical examination of blood, complete blood cell count and total score of Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Results: After 15 days of Korean medicine treatment, there was an increase in hemoglobin states, even after intervention ended, for over 30 days with improvement of the patient's fatigue. Conclusions: This study suggested that Shipjeondaebo-tang might be effective in patient's renal anemia and fatigue recovery.

  • Objective: In this case report, we address the case of a 68-year-old woman with numbness in both soles due to restless legs syndrome. Methods: A patient was treated with Korean medicine including herbal medication Gyejibokryeong-hwan during 73 days as an outpatient. We evaluated the improvements of symptoms by use of the International Restless Legs Scale (IRLS) and checking subjective symptoms of patient. Results: After 73 days of Korean medicine treatment, there was improvement in patient's symptoms. IRLS score improved from 12 to 8, and subjective symptoms improved to about 30% compared to the first time. Conclusions: This study suggested that Korean medicine treatments might be effective in RLS patient recovery.

  • To satisfy the increasing medical demanding especially for sever burn patients to regenerate full thickness wound cure, this study developed dermis with gelatin based scaffold and perform the biocompatibility tests. To prepare scaffold 30% of gelatin was mixed with sieved salt and dried in the mold to shape then, cross linked with a water-soluble cross-linker, EDAC. Preparing the cell for seeding from a rabbit skin, the fibroblast and keratinocyte were successfully isolated and cultured in vitro. After cell and scaffold were ready, the fibroblast was seeded to the scaffold (∼10$\^$6/ cell/cm ) for preparing dermis and keratinocyte was cultured until forming the sheet. (omitted)

  • Objective: This case report describes an 82-year-old man complaining of insomnia with pain after discontinuation of quetiapine. Methods: The patient was treated with the herbal extraction Gilchogeun-dan, and symptomatic improvement was assessed using the Korean version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results: Following 28 days of Gilchogeun-dan treatment, the patient's symptoms improved. Conclusions: This case suggests that Gilchogeun-dan could be effective in treating insomnia with pain through central nervous depressant activity and analgesic effect.

  • Glucose is a major source of metabolic fuel and lipid and protein syntheses. Transport of glucose into the cell is regulated by an action of glucose transport.associated transporters, especially solute carriers 2A (Slc2a, protein symbol GLUT). The present study was focused on examination of mRNA expression of various Slc2a isoforms in the epididymis during postnatal development. Total RNAs isolated from different epididymal segments (caput, corpus, and caudal epididymis) were utilized for real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. Results showed that Slc2a 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8 were expressed in the entire epididymal regions. In addition, the abundance of these Slc2a isoforms' transcripts was different within each epididymal regions. Moreover, the present study showed differential expression of these Slc2a isoforms among different epididymal segments according to postnatal ages. The current study suggests that glucose transport in the epididymis via various Slc2a isoforms would be necessary for maintenance of the epididymal functions.

  • A 70-year-old Korean female with diplopia and left ptosis due to oculomotor nerve palsy presented to the hospital. The patient was treated with electroacupuncture, sweet bee venom pharmacopuncture, and moxibustion. She also received acupuncture and herbal medicines Siryeng-tang and Boikyangwi-tang. The change in length (mm) from the medial canthus to the lateral iris was measured to evaluate limitation of eye movement, and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for diplopia. Limitation of eye movement and diplopia was used to determine diplopia. The limitation of eye movement and diplopia were improved after the administration of the Korean medicines. Korean medicine may be effective in treating limitation of eye movement and diplopia due to oculomotor nerve palsy.

  • Objective: The purpose of this case report is to evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture on Pal-sa (EX-UE9) for unilateral motor disturbance of the hand after cerebral infarction. Methods: One patient with unilateral motor disturbance of the hand following cerebral infarction (right basal ganglion and corona radiata) was treated with acupuncture, herbal medication, and electroacupuncture on Pal-sa (EX-UE9) once daily from June 30, 2016 to July 4, 2016. We evaluated improvement using the Box and Block Test (BTT) and 10-seconds Test, including the Finger Individual Movement Test (FIMT), the Hand Pronation and Supination Test (HPST), and the Finger Tapping Test (FTT). Results: After five days of treatment, increase of FIMT and FTT scores was observed after electroacupuncture on Pal-sa (EX-UE9). However, no increase was observed in BBT or HPST scores. Conclusions: This study suggests that electroacupuncture on Pal-sa (EX-UE9) can help treat motor disturbance of the hand after cerebral infarction.
