Impact of Collaborative Problem-Solving Instruction Model on Character Competence of High School Students (협력적 문제해결 중심 교수모델이 고등학교 학생의 인성 역량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effect of the Collaborative Problem-Solving for Character Competence (CoProC) instruction model within the context of secondary science education. The participants of this study were comprised of 143 Korean students, each of whom was in the 10th grade spread across four class cohorts. These cohorts were further divided into an experimental group (comprised of 73 students from two different classes), which received the CoProC program; and a control group (70 students from two other classes), which did not. In order to assess the effect of CoProC instruction model upon participants' character competence, we designed and administered a Character Competence Test for participants. The CoProC instruction model consists of 3 fundamental steps: Preparation, Problem-solving, and Evaluation. Key character competence targeted in the CoProC program include caring, collaboration, communication, responsibility, respect, honesty, self-regulation, and the development of positive self-image. Thus, these same qualities were targeted and analyzed in the Character Competence Test, which was administered before and after the CoProC activities. The results show a significant increase in the experimental group's competency for caring, collaboration, responsibility, respect, and self-regulation when compared to the control group. Based on these results, we have found that CoProC instruction model to be an effective teaching intervention toward cultivating character competence in a secondary science education setting.

Characteristics of Nursing and Caring Concepts Measured in Nursing Competencies or Caring Behaviors Tools (간호 역량 또는 돌봄 행위 측정도구를 통해서 살펴본 간호와 돌봄의 특성)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify characteristics of nursing and caring concepts measured by nursing competencies or caring behaviors tools for general nurses working in acute care hospitals. Methods: Five major nursing literature databases were used to identify the relevant tools. The study included 19 nursing competencies tools with a total of 843 measurement items and 12 caring behaviors tools with 334 items. According to the International Council of Nurses (ICN)'s Competencies Framework and 8Cs suggested by Roach (1987) and Pusari (1998), the measurement items were classified by two researchers independently first and in agreement finally. Results: Competency of 'key principles of care' including sub-areas of the ICN Framework was most commonly found: on average 49.3% of nursing competencies items and 91.9% of caring behaviors items. 97.0% of the caring behaviors items were classified into one of six Cs: competence (27.5%), confidence (21.3%), compassion (17.1%), commitment (16.5%), communication (9.9%), or conscience (4.8%). Conclusion: Nursing competencies tools were more likely to measure 'what to do' focusing on tasks, while caring behaviors tools were to measure 'how to do' focusing on nurses' attitudes or values. Nursing practices should be evaluated with both nursing competencies and caring behaviors tools, considering that nursing and caring were differently conceptualized in the quantitative tools.

  • One of the key factors of early development is the specification of competence between the oocyte and the sperm, which occurs during gametogenesis. However, the starting point, growth, and maturation for acquiring competence during spermatogenesis and oogenesis in mammals are very different. Spermatogenesis includes spermiogenesis, but such a metamorphosis is not observed during oogenesis. Glycosylation, a ubiquitous modification, is a preliminary requisite for distribution of the structural and functional components of spermatids for metamorphosis. In addition, glycosylation using epididymal or female genital secretory glycans is an important process for the sperm maturation, the acquisition of the potential for fertilization, and the acceleration of early embryo development. However, nonemzymatic unexpected covalent bonding of a carbohydrate and malglycosylation can result in falling fertility rates as shown in the diabetic male. So far, glycosylation during spermatogenesis and the dynamics of the plasma membrane in the process of capacitation and fertilization have been evaluated, and a powerful role of glycosylation in spermatogenesis and early development is also suggested by structural bioinformatics, functional genomics, and functional proteomics. Further understanding of glycosylation is needed to provide a better understanding of fertilization and embryo development and for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools for infertility.

A Study on the Effect of Core Competence of Supervisor on the Business Performance of Franchisees and Franchisor

  • This study analyzed the effect of core competence of supervisor on the satisfaction, loyalty, business performance of franchisees and business performance of franchisor. And the purpose of this study is to solve the most problematic issues in franchise business such as poor sales of franchisee, inadequate measures for activating sluggish stores, closing rate increase of franchisee, dispute between a franchisee and franchisor. The results of this study will be used as data for the success of Franchisor's business operation and for the change and development of the franchise industry. In this study, 168 CEOs and employees in the franchise industry were surveyed. Through previous research and expert interviews, we designed the core competency factors of franchise supervisors into seven areas: check, consulting, coordination, promotion, counseling, communication, and control. In order to verify the hypothesis of the research, the relationship between variables was verified by simple regression analysis and multiple regression analysis. Key result of the study are as follows. First, the core competency of the supervisor has a positive relationship with the franchisee's satisfaction. Second, the core competence of the supervisor has a positive relationship with the franchisee's loyalty. Third, franchisee's satisfaction has a positive effect on loyalty. Fourth, franchisee's satisfaction positively affects the business performance of franchisee and franchisor. Fifth, franchisee's loyalty positively affects the business performance of franchisee and franchisor.

Core Competency Requirements and Implementation of the Workers Health Center Employees (근로자건강센터 직원의 핵심역량 요구 및 역량수행)

  • Objectives: This study was established to ascertain the requirements and implementation of core competencies for employees of the a workers' health center. Methods: The study consisted of a four-step process: a literature review, focus group interviews, expert opinions, and a questionnaire. The survey was conducted online among 119 employees of the National Workers' Health Center. Results: As a result of the research, eleven core competencies and 37 sub-competencies were derived in three areas: Competence as a social worker, competence to perform duties, and competence for maintaining expertise. The key demands for core competencies were "health consultation" and "understanding of small businesses.". They responded that they needed to "maintain an ethical attitude" and "consult on workers' health.". The largest score difference between core competency requirements and competency implementation was "collaboration with the community.". Conclusions: It is necessary to increase competencies not only for competencies with high core requirements, but also for relatively low competencies. In addition, efforts should be made to improve the core competencies of the employees of the Workers' Health Center to effectively respond to changes in the industrial structure and crises such as COVID-19.

Difference in the Cultural Competency and Cultural Nursing Competence Educational Needs of Public Health Nurses and Community Health Practitioners (보건소간호사와 보건진료전담공무원의 문화역량 및 문화간호역량 교육요구 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of cultural competency and cultural nursing competence educational needs of public health nurses (PHNs) and community health practitioners (CHPs) and to uncover the difference between the two groups. Methods: The subjects of this study were 217 PHNs and 165 CHPs. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, an independent two-sample t-test, the x2 test, one-way ANOVA, and the Scheffé test were used for data analysis. Result: There was no statistically significant difference between the cultural competency of CHPs (4.27±1.00) and that of PHNs (4.10±1.07) which were at a moderate level. Among the subareas, cultural awareness and sensitivity were above average, but cultural skills and knowledge showed relatively low scores. There was no statistically significant difference between the cultural nursing competence educational needs of CHPs (3.85±0.65) and PHNs (3.90±0.70) and these were at a relatively high level. Among the subareas, knowledge of key concepts, cultural communication, and attitudes and skills were above average. Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the need to develop and implement educational programs to enhance the cultural competency of PHNs and CHPs nationwide using various teaching-learning methods.

A Study on Selecting the Key Research Areas in Nano-technology Field in Korea: An Application of Technology Cluster Analysis in National R&D Program (한국의 나노기술 분야에서 핵심 연구영역 도출에 관한 연구 -국가 연구개발사업 수준에서 기술군집분석의 적용-)

  • This paper deals with the methods for selecting the key research areas, which fit for the large, multi-disciplinary, and long-term programs by making use of Technology Cluster Analysis. This method is applied to mano-technology field at the level of national R&D program. 56 nano-technologies are analyzed and grouped into three main clusters based on the survey data from 180 experts. Three main clusters are \circled1 naro-materials related cluster, \circled2 naro-device related cluster, and \circled3 naro-bio related cluster. These three clusters are coincided with the focused areas of nano-technology in Korea. Each cluster is analyzed in view of its competence position.

  • As the elderly population grows, the use of assistive products that facilitate independent living by the elderly is increasing. Assistive product specialists are important to selecting the correct assistive products. Therefore, it is necessary to grasp the needs of assistive product users. This study was conducted to identify the key tasks that should be prioritized through analysis of the needs of assistive product users of assistive product specialist's job competence Questionnaires were administered to 84 assistive product users in person and by mail. The questionnaire was designed to investigate the importance of work and educational needs based on the job of the assistive product specialist. Based on the results, the priorities of five duties and 12 key tasks were derived. The key tasks are highly demanded by assistive product users and must be included in the performance of the job of the assistive product specialist. Based on this study, it is expected that elderly people will gain independence and improve their quality of life in their homes and communities through an individualized approach.

The Influence of Online Social Networking on Individual Virtual Competence and Task Performance in Organizations (온라인 네트워킹 활동이 가상협업 역량 및 업무성과에 미치는 영향)

  • With the advent of communication technologies including electronic collaborative tools and conferencing systems provided over the Internet, virtual collaboration is becoming increasingly common in organizations. Virtual collaboration refers to an environment in which the people working together are interdependent in their tasks, share responsibility for outcomes, are geographically dispersed, and rely on mediated rather than face-to face, communication to produce an outcome. Research suggests that new sets of individual skill, knowledge, and ability (SKAs) are required to perform effectively in today's virtualized workplace, which is labeled as individual virtual competence. It is also argued that use of online social networking sites may influence not only individuals' daily lives but also their capability to manage their work-related relationships in organizations, which in turn leads to better performance. The existing research regarding (1) the relationship between virtual competence and task performance and (2) the relationship between online networking and task performance has been conducted based on different theoretical perspectives so that little is known about how online social networking and virtual competence interplay to predict individuals' task performance. To fill this gap, this study raises the following research questions: (1) What is the individual virtual competence required for better adjustment to the virtual collaboration environment? (2) How does online networking via diverse social network service sites influence individuals' task performance in organizations? (3) How do the joint effects of individual virtual competence and online networking influence task performance? To address these research questions, we first draw on the prior literature and derive four dimensions of individual virtual competence that are related with an individual's self-concept, knowledge and ability. Computer self-efficacy is defined as the extent to which an individual beliefs in his or her ability to use computer technology broadly. Remotework self-efficacy is defined as the extent to which an individual beliefs in his or her ability to work and perform joint tasks with others in virtual settings. Virtual media skill is defined as the degree of confidence of individuals to function in their work role without face-to-face interactions. Virtual social skill is an individual's skill level in using technologies to communicate in virtual settings to their full potential. It should be noted that the concept of virtual social skill is different from the self-efficacy and captures an individual's cognition-based ability to build social relationships with others in virtual settings. Next, we discuss how online networking influences both individual virtual competence and task performance based on the social network theory and the social learning theory. We argue that online networking may enhance individuals' capability in expanding their social networks with low costs. We also argue that online networking may enable individuals to learn the necessary skills regarding how they use technological functions, communicate with others, and share information and make social relations using the technical functions provided by electronic media, consequently increasing individual virtual competence. To examine the relationships among online networking, virtual competence, and task performance, we developed research models (the mediation, interaction, and additive models, respectively) by integrating the social network theory and the social learning theory. Using data from 112 employees of a virtualized company, we tested the proposed research models. The results of analysis partly support the mediation model in that online social networking positively influences individuals' computer self-efficacy, virtual social skill, and virtual media skill, which are key predictors of individuals' task performance. Furthermore, the results of the analysis partly support the interaction model in that the level of remotework self-efficacy moderates the relationship between online social networking and task performance. The results paint a picture of people adjusting to virtual collaboration that constrains and enables their task performance. This study contributes to research and practice. First, we suggest a shift of research focus to the individual level when examining virtual phenomena and theorize that online social networking can enhance individual virtual competence in some aspects. Second, we replicate and advance the prior competence literature by linking each component of virtual competence and objective task performance. The results of this study provide useful insights into how human resource responsibilities assess employees' weakness and strength when they organize virtualized groups or projects. Furthermore, it provides managers with insights into the kinds of development or training programs that they can engage in with their employees to advance their ability to undertake virtual work.

Analyzing Education Needs for the Development of Entrepreneurship of University Student (대학생의 창업역량 개발을 위한 교육요구 분석)

  • As the importance of entrepreneurship education has increased, universities are conducting various programs related to entrepreneurship for university students. Despite these efforts, however, the demand for a competency-oriented entrepreneurship education program to realize the entrepreneurial idea is not fully reflected. Therefore this study is conducted to provide strategies for the development, management, and facilitation of the entrepreneurship education program of university through the analysis of difference between the level of importance and level of performance for the development of entrepreneurship of university student. Through the literature review, entrepreneurship is classified the step of confirming entrepreneurial intention, drawing up a start-up model, and planning a venture start-up. This study is analyzed through the t-test to identify difference between level of importance and level of performance with the 15 items of 7 competencies. This study is used Borich needs analysis and the Locus for Focus Model to know the priority of education needs for the development of entrepreneurship of university student. As the result of study, university students' entrepreneurial competences between level of importance and level of performance are shown significantly different among 15 items, the first priority is 6 items and the second priority is 2 items using Borich needs analysis and the Locus for Focus Model. Four competence clusters such as self-analytic competence, ability of eliciting entrepreneurial idea, ability of analyzing idea validity, and business-plan presentation competency are suggested with the combination of first and second priority competence. In order to develop each competence, ability of eliciting entrepreneurial idea and ability of analyzing idea validity are the key of education, self-analytic competence is needed to strengthen the intention of entrepreneurship, and business-plan presentation competence is cultivated as the ability of persuading investors to realize business ideas and is applied to business situation.
