  • Purpose: There are differences between Standard Uptake Value (SUV) of CT attenuation corrected PET and that of $^{137}Cs$. Since various causes lead to difference of SUV, it is important to know what is the cause of these difference. Since only the X-ray CT and $^{137}Cs$ transmission data are used for the attenuation correction, in Philips GEMINI PET/CT scanner, proper transformation of these data into usable attenuation coefficients for 511 keV photon has to be ascertained. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy in the CT measurement and compare the CT and $^{137}Cs$-based attenuation correction in this scanner. Methods: For all the experiments, CT was set to 40 keV (120 kVp) and 50 mAs. To evaluate the accuracy of the CT measurement, CT performance phantom was scanned and Hounsfield units (HU) for those regions were compared to the true values. For the comparison of CT and $^{137}Cs$-based attenuation corrections, transmission scans of the elliptical lung-spine-body phantom and electron density CT phantom composed of various components, such as water, bone, brain and adipose, were performed using CT and $^{137}Cs$. Transformed attenuation coefficients from these data were compared to each other and true 511 keV attenuation coefficient acquired using $^{68}Ge$ and ECAT EXACT 47 scanner. In addition, CT and $^{137}Cs$-derived attenuation coefficients and SUV values for $^{18}F$-FDG measured from the regions with normal and pathological uptake in patients' data were also compared. Results: HU of all the regions in CT performance phantom measured using GEMINI PET/CT were equivalent to the known true values. CT based attenuation coefficients were lower than those of $^{68}Ge$ about 10% in bony region of NEMA ECT phantom. Attenuation coefficients derived from $^{137}Cs$ data was slightly higher than those from CT data also in the images of electron density CT phantom and patients' body with electron density. However, the SUV values in attenuation corrected images using $^{137}Cs$ were lower than images corrected using CT. Percent difference between SUV values was about 15%. Conclusion: Although the HU measured using this scanner was accurate, accuracy in the conversion from CT data into the 511 keV attenuation coefficients was limited in the bony region. Discrepancy in the transformed attenuation coefficients and SUV values between CT and $^{137}Cs$-based data shown in this study suggests that further optimization of various parameters in data acquisition and processing would be necessary for this scanner.

  • Objectives : We investigated the anti-aging effects on skin with Saccharomyces fermented modified Kyungohkgo extract (SFKE). Methods : Fermented modified Kyungohkgo extracts by 14 different kinds of microorganism were prepared and most effective Saccharomyces fermented modified Kyungohkgo extract among these was selected for anti-aging agent. We measured various effects related to skin such as scavenging activity against free radical, cell proliferation, collagen synthesis and toxicity of SFKE were evaluated and compared with modified Kyungohkgo extract (KE). Results : Free-radical scavenging activity and cell proliferating ratio of SFKE were 2 and 8 times higher than those of KE. The SFKE could significantly increase the collagen synthetic ratio compared with KE treated group. SFKE showed no toxicity at all tested concentrations. Conclusions : The results of our study propose that SFKE have good anti-aging effects on skin.

  • It is possible to distinguish X-ray events from non X-ray events in proportional conters using the method of rise time discrimination (RTD). In order to subtract non X-ray background, we have developed a simple RTD circuit which will be applied to the proportional counter planned for a sounding rocket experiment. The entire circuit consists of two parts ; the rise time measurement circuit and the time to amplitude conversion circuit which includes the self-calibration mode. From the test with X-ray detecting system, we obtained that the background can be rejected more than 80% in the energy band 2∼12 keV. However we confirmed that the RDT method is not proper to be used for the energy range above 12kV.

  • While it is presumed that substorm injection electrons of a few hundred keV are the seeds for relativistic electrons frequently observed during the recovery phase of storms, correlation between the two events has not been well explored with the observed satellite data. We would like to address this problem in the present paper using the data from the geosynchronous GOES and LANL satellites as well as from the polar orbiting NOAA satellites. Our statistical study shows the two channels of LANL SOPA instrument, 105 150 keV and 150 225 keV, best correlates with the increase of the flux levels of GOES relativistic electrons. Especially, the relativistic electron events are not observed when the flux levels of these two channels are maintained low in the substorm injections, regardless of the level of the ULF activities. The conclusion does not change whether the substorm injections occur . during the storm recovery phase or during the non-storm time. As the ULF waves are observed quite frequently over the entire range of L=4 to L=7, the reason why REEs are seen mostly during the storm time seems to be related to the fact that storm-time substorms produce more seed electrons than the substorms that occur during the non-storm time.

  • In order to accurate treat damage induced by ionizing radiation in biological system on the cellular or subcellular level with physical parameters characterising the radiation, specific primary ionization (SPI) is introduced as the parameter which does not suffer from limitation of linear energy transfer (LET). In this present study, we calculate specitic primayt ionization with total ionization cross section (TICS) of electrons, protons and alppa particles incident on water. The used energy ranges cover those that have been freqently used in radiobioligical experiments. For electrons above 1 keV, we have relativistic corrections and also compare the results with other data. For electrons energies below 100keV, our results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations published recently by (perris and zarris 1987). These results may be easily applied by the interested radiobiogists.

  • High wind penetration might cause the frequency stability problem because a wind power plant (WPP) is operating in a maximum power tracking mode to extract the maximal energy from wind and thus does not react to the system frequency variation. Therefore, the system operators encourage a WPP to participate in frequency control, which includes inertia/orl and primary control. The frequency support capability of a WPP depends on the amount of kinetic energy (KE) and reserve. This paper formulates an optimization problem to maximize KE while retaining the required reserve. The proposed optimization problem would allow wind generators (WGs) with a smaller wind speed to retaine more KE. The performance of the proposed optimization problem was investigated in a 100-MW WPP consisting of 20 units of 5-MW permanent magnet synchronous generators using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results show that the proposed optimization problem successfully improves the frequency nadir more than a conventional reserve allocation that distributes WGs proportional to the current output.

  • A medium energy ion scattering spectroscopy(ME1S) system has been developed and tested. In the MEIS system a toroidal electrostatic energy analyzer(TEA) and a two dimensional position sensitivedetector(PSD) were used. The energy resolution of MEIS system was estimated to be less than $4\times 10^{-3}$ and the overall angular resolution was less than 0.3". From the MEIS spectrum of $Ta_2O_5$(300 $\AA$)/ onSi analyzedousing 60 keV $H^+$, the energy loss factor(S.1 and depth resolution were estimated to he 42 eV/$\AA$ and 9.7 $\AA$, respectively. Also Si(100) surface was analyzed using the MEIS system. A random MElSspectrum was obtained from thc Si(100) covered with native oxide layers. At the double alignment condition, MElS spectrum showed ;i Si surface peak, a oxygen peak and a carbon peak.nd a carbon peak.

  • In this study, we analyze hardware implementation schemes of the ARS(Advanced Encryption Standard-128) algorithm that has recently been selected as the standard cypher algorithm by NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology) . The implementation schemes include the basic architecture, loop unrolling, inner-round pipelining, outer-round pipelining and resource sharing of the S-box. We used MaxPlus2 9.64 for VHDL design and simulations and FLEX10KE-family FPGAs produced by Altera Corp. for implementations. According to the results, the four-stage inner-round pipelining scheme shows the best performance vs. cost ratio, whereas the loop unrolling scheme shows the worst.

  • This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash with a high replacing ratio of clay on the radiation shielding properties of bricks. Some interaction parameters (mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and absorption efficiency) of clay fly ash bricks were measured with a NaI(Tl) detector at 661.6 keV, 1,173.2 keV, and 1,332.5 keV. For the investigation of their shielding behavior, fly ash bricks were molded using an admixture to clay. A narrow beam transmission geometry condition was used for the measurements. The measured values of these parameters were found in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The elemental compositions of the clay fly ash bricks were analyzed by using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. At selected energies the values of the effective atomic numbers and effective electron densities showed a very modest variation with the composition of the fly ash. This seems to be due to the similarity of their elemental compositions. The obtained results were also compared with concrete, in order to study the effect of fly ash content on the radiation shielding properties of clay fly ash bricks. The clay fly ash bricks showed good shielding properties for moderate energy gamma rays. Therefore, these bricks are feasible and eco-friendly compared with traditional clay bricks used for construction.

  • Damage induced by Si ion implantation and its annealing behavior during rapid thermal annealing were investigated by cross-sectional TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and RB ( Rutherford backscattering) spectrum. 150keV and 50keV Si ions were implanted in Si (100) at room temperature with doses of 2${\times}10^{15}cm^{-2}$. And 100keV Si ions were implanted in Si with doses from 1${\times}10^{14}cm^{-2}$. A variety of damage structures were generated by Si ion implantation such as continuous amorphous layer extending to the surface buried amorphous layer and damage clusters. Damage clusters are annealed out at the lower annealing temperature of 550 $^{\circ}C$. However, event at the temperature of 110$0^{\circ}C$ end of range loops remain in the original lower amorphous/crystal interface in the case of continuous and buried amorphous layer formation. Extended defects in the shape of zipper dislocations are also observed at the middle of the recrystallized region in the buried amorphous layer.
