  • The purpose of this study was to obtain some informations for the radiographic differential diagnosis between dentigerous cysts and unicystic ameloblastomas in the mandible. The authors observed and compared the clinico-radiographic features of 38 cases of dentigerous cyst and 32 cases of unicystic ameloblastoma associated with impacted mandibular molar. The obtained results were as follows: Dentigerous cysts occurred the most frequently in the 3rd decade, but unicystic ameloblastomas in the 2nd decade, and both lesions occurred with slight predilection in males. Average of lesional size of unicystic ameloblastomas was larger than that of dentigerous cysts, and lesions of over 25㎠ were only in unicystic ameloblastomas. Cortical thinning and expansion were more frequently observed in unicystic ameloblastomas at 72.9% than in dentigerous cysts at 15.8%. Dentigerous cysts showed smooth border at 89.5%, but unicystic ameloblastomas showed smooth border at 53.1% and scalloped border at 46.9%. Dentigerous cysts showed well-defined outline at 81.6%, but unicystic ameloblastomas showed well-defined outline at 53.1% and moderate-defined outline at 46.9%. In both lesions, the mandibular 3rd molar was the most frequent causative tooth. Average of distance between the cemento-enamel junction and lesional wall attachment of the causative tooth was longer in unicystic ameloblastomas than in dentigerous cysts. Severe displacement of causative tooth was more frequent in unicystic ameloblastomas at 62.5% than in dentigerous cysts at 23.7%. Dentigerous cysts showed homogeneous lesional radiolucency at 89.5%, but unicystic ameloblastomas showed inhomogeneous lesional radiolucency at 53.1%. Root resorption of adjacent tooth and displacement of mandibular canal were more frequent in unicystic ameloblastomas at 65.2% and 61.5% than in dentigerous cysts at 15.8% and 38.1% respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the interpretation results of the panoramic radiographs with those of intraoral radiographs in evaluation of alveolar bone loss. All radiographs were obtained from 100 patients who had visited the Dental Infirmary of Kyungpook National University Hospital for periodontal state evaluation. The results were as follows: The percentages of interpretable sites were 95.9%(94.6% in maxilla, 97.4% in mandible) on the intraoral radiographs, and 90.7%(84.0% in maxilla, 97.3% in mandible) on the panoramic radiographs. The concordance of interpretation scores of marginal bone loss between intraoral and panoramic radiographs was 66.3%(65.6% in maxilla, 66.8% in mandible). And according to the site, the highest concordance was in the distal surface of the mandibular 2nd premolar at 82.0%, and the distal surface of the mandibular 1st premolar(76.8%), the distal surface of the maxillary central incisor(75.8%), the mesial surface of the 2nd premolar (75.0%) in descending order of frequency. According to the interpretation scores of the marginal bone loss, the percentages of concordance between intraoral and panoramic radiographs were the highest on the score 10 at 76.4%, and the lowest on the score 8, 9. And the percentages of concordance were inverse proportional rate from the score 5 to the score 9. Number of the observed sites of the furcation involvement in bitewing and panoramic radiographs were 268 sites, and the percentage of interpretable sites was 92.9% in bitewing radiographs and 86.6% in panoramic radiographs. And the concordance rate of interpretation was 79.5%.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, radiographic appearance, and characteristics of patients with zygomatic air cell defect (ZACD), and to give recommendations concerning radiographic evaluation and surgery. Materials and Methods: Routine panoramic radiographs of 1,400 patients admitted to the Kyungpook National University Hospital Dental Clinic, were retrospectively examined for the clinical and radiographic features of ZACD. Results: ZACD was found in 31 cases, representing a prevalence of 2.2%. Patients with ZACD had a mean age of 27.5 years and a range of 9-52 years. Most ZACD cases were in their thirties. ZACD showed a strong male prediliction, 22 of the 31 subjects were males and 9 were females. Twenty-four cases of ZACD (77.4%) were unilateral, with the half occurring on the right side. In seven cases (22.6%), ZACD was bilateral. Twenty-six (68.4%) of the defects were of unilocular, while twelve (31.6%) of the defects were multilocular. Conclusion: Knowledge of ZACD may be helpful in interpreting images, including panoramic radiographs, in planning surgical treatment of the TMJ and in understanding the spread of pathological processes into the joint.

  • Baculovirus expression systems have many known advantages including fast and cost-effective methods to generate large amounts of recombinant proteins in comparison to bacterial expression systems, particularly those requiring complex post-translational modifications. Especially, recombinant baculoviruses can transfer their vectors and express their recombinant proteins in a wide range of mammalian cell types. In this study, baculoviral vectors which were reconstructed from pcDNA3.1 vector, were recombined with cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter, uroplakin II promoter, polyhedron promoter, vesicular stomatitis virus G (VSVG), enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), and protein transduction domain (PTD). These recombinant vectors were infected with various cells and cell lines. The baculovirus vector thus developed was analyzed by comparing the metastasis and expression of the recombinant genes with conventional vectors. These results suggest that the baculovirus vector has higher efficiency in metastasis and expression than the control vector.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the developmental process of myelination by neuron and Schwann cell cultures and the development of demyelination by herpes simplex virus-1 infection by electron microscopy and molecular biological analysis. The dorsal root ganglion (DRG) was isolated from the mouse embryo and Schwann cells and neuronal cells were cultured in vitro. Neuronal cells treated with mitotic inhibitors and purified Schwann cells were co-cultured together to induce myelination. The herpes simplex virus-1 was infected with the co-cultured cells, and the demyelination was induced. The myelin protein zero (MPZ) antibody, which means the presence of myelin formation, was used and electron microscopy was used to observe the development of myelin and dehydration.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate absorbed dose of each important anatomic site of phantom (RT-2l0 Head & Neck Section/sup R/, Humanoid Systems Co., U.S.A.) head in occlusal radiography. X-radiation dosimetry at 12 anatomic sites in maxillary anterior topography, maxillary posterior topography, mandibular anterior cross-section, mandibular posterior cross-section, mandibular anterior topographic, mandibular posterior topographic occlusal projection was performed with calcium sulfate thermoluminescent dosimeters under 70Kvp and 15mA, 1/4 second (8 inch cone) and 1 second (16 inch cone) exposure time. The results obtained were as follows: Skin surface produced highest absorbed dose ranged between 3264 mrad and 4073 mrad but there was little difference between projections. In maxillary anterior topographic occlusal radiography, eyeballs, maxillary sinuses, and pituitary gland sites produced higher absorbed doses than those of other sites. In maxillary posterior topographic occlusal radiography, exposed eyeball site and exposed maxillary sinus site produced high absorbed doses. In mandibular anterior cross-sectional occlusal radiography, all sites were produced relatively low absorbed dose except eyeball sites. In mandibular posterior cross-sectional occlusal radiography, exposed eyeball site and exposed maxillary sinus site were produced relatively higher absorbed doses than other sites. In mandibular anterior topographic occlusal radiography, maxillary sinuses, submandibular glands, and thyroid gland sites produced high absorbed doses than other sites. In mandibular posterior topographic occlusal radiography, submandibular gland site of the exposed side produced high absorbed dose than other sites and eyeball site of the opposite side produced relatively high absorbed dose.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the efficacy of panoramic radiography by comparing the results of clinical examination with radiographic findings. Materials and Methods: We studied 190 patients (20 men and 170 women; mean age, 40 years; range, 22 to 68 years) who visited the health promotion center of Korea Medical Science Institute and were examined both clinically and by panoramic radiography. We compared results from both examinations. Treatment options by clinical examination were described as "no treatment indicated", "treatment of dental caries", "removal of calculus", "treatment of periodontal disease", "prothodontic treatment" and "extraction of the third molar". Findings taken from the panoramic radiography were: dental caries, periapical lesion, alveolar bone loss, calculus deposition, retained root, impaction of the third molar, disease of maxillary sinus, bony change of mandibular condyle, etc. Results: The prevalence of panoramic findings were: 37.9% of dental caries, 17.4% of periapical lesions, 44.7% of alveolar bone losses, 62.6% of calculi deposition, 7.9% of retained roots, 26.8% of third molar impactions, 6.3% of diseases of maxillary sinus, 2.1 % of bony changes of mandibular condlye and 35.8% of miscellaneous lesions. Abnormal conditions revealed by panoramic radiography which had not been discovered on clinical examination were: 24.2% of the patients had dental caries, 17.4% had periapical lesions, 7.4% had calculi deposition, 5.3% had retained roots, 15.3% had third molar impactions. The opposite cases were: 5.2% had dental caries, 12.6% had calculi deposition, and 9.5% had third molar impactions. Conclusion: The use of panoramic radiography as a supplement to the clinical examination might be a valuable screening technique.

  • Objective: To study the attitudes and awareness of healthcare professionals (physicians, pharmacists, nurses and others) toward the Pharmacovigilance system and experience for adverse drug reactions (ADRs) from a Single University Hospital in Deajeon. Methods: A survey was performed using a structured questionnaire involving 360 health-care professionals at the hospital between $1^{st}$ November and $16^{th}$ November, 2012. Results: Sixty-five percent (n=235) of all respondents were experienced incidences of ADRs for their patients and 55.8% (n=201) knew the ADR Spontaneous Reporting System in the hospital. However, three-fourths (n=273, 75.8%) of respondents did not know the existence of the Korean Association of Regional Pharmacovigilance Centers (KARP) and 61.7% (n=222) were unaware of the obligation of ADR report from KFDA in cases of serious ADRs. About 83% (n=299) answered that the electronic ADR report system of the hospital was helpful while their work and most (n=336, 93.3%) agreed on the necessaries of the promotion and education about ADR. Conclusion: Seventy-five percent (n=271) of respondents wanted to continue the work for evaluation and feedback for ADRs reported in the hospital. However, the barriers to reporting ADR were; inconvenient ADR reporting system and the lack of time to report ADRs. This study showed that the easier ADR reporting system and education and promotion about ADRs for health-care providers are needed to improve the ADR reporting.

  • The strain ageing behaviour of Zircaloy-4 has been studied in the temperature range 175$^{\circ}C$ to 575$^{\circ}C$ for both quenched and annealed specimens. The strain ageing in quenched Zircaloy-4 was found in the temperature range 175$^{\circ}C$ to 50$0^{\circ}C$ and its Peak occured at 3$25^{\circ}C$ while the strain ageing in annealed specimens occured in the temperature range 175-575$^{\circ}C$, showing two peaks, one at 323$^{\circ}C$ and a higher one at 45$0^{\circ}C$. The peak at 3$25^{\circ}C$ in both quenched and annealed specimens is considered to be due to the segregation of interstitial oxygen atoms to cell walls during ageing. The peak at 45$0^{\circ}C$ in annealed specimens is considered to he due to the interaction of dislocations with Fe atoms. It has been found that strain ageing stress at ~30$0^{\circ}C$ in zirconium alloys is proportional to the square root of oxygen content.
