  • To increase the utilization of the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) series imagery being developed pursuant to the national space development program, high quality images with enhanced locational accuracy should be created through standardized post-processing processes. In the present study, using the Value-Added Processing System(VAPS) constructed for the post-processing of KOMPSAT imagery, location correction experiments were conducted using KOMPSAT-2 and -3 imagery from domestic and overseas regions. First, 50 pieces from each of KOMPSAT-2 imagery were selected from South Korean and North Korean regions, and modeling was conducted using GCP Chips. According to the results, the Root Mean Square Errors(RMSE) for South Korea and North Korea were 1.59 pixels and 2.04 pixels, respectively, and the locational accuracy of ortho mosaic imagery using check points were 1.33m(RMSE) and 1.90m(RMSE), respectively. Meanwhile, in the case of overseas regions for which GCP could not be easily obtained, the improvement of locational accuracy could be identified through image corrections using Open Street Map(OSM). The VAPS and reference materials used in the present study are expected to be very useful in constructing a precise image DB for entire global regions.

  • There have been many applications to observe Earth using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) since it could acquire Earth observation data without reference to weathers or local times. However researches about digital map generation using SAR have hardly been performed due to complex raw data processing. In this study, we suggested feasibility of producing digital map using SAR stereo images. We collected two sets, which include an ascending and a descending orbit acquisitions respectively, of KOMPSAT-5 stereo dataset. In order to suggest the feasibility of digital map generation from SAR stereo images, we performed 1) rational polynomial coefficient transformation from radar geometry, 2) digital resititution using KOMPSAT-5 stereo images, and 3) validation using digital-map-derived reference points and check points. As the results of two models, root mean squared errors of XY and Z direction were less than 1m for each model. We discussed that KOMPSAT-5 stereo image could generated 1:25,000 digital map which meets a standard of the digital map. The proposed results would contribute to generate and update digital maps for inaccessible areas and wherever weather conditions are unstable such as North Korea or Polar region.

  • Urban environment represent one of the most dynamic regions on earth. As in other countries, forests, green areas, agricultural lands are rapidly changing into residential or industrial areas in South Korea. Monitoring such rapid changes in land use requires rapid data acquisition, and satellite imagery can be an effective method to this demand. In general, SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites acquire images with an active system, so the brightness of the image is determined by the surface roughness. Therefore, the water areas appears dark due to low reflection intensity, In the residential area where the artificial structures are distributed, the brightness value is higher than other areas due to the strong reflection intensity. If we use these characteristics of SAR images, settlement areas can be extracted efficiently. In this study, extraction of settlement areas was performed using TerraSAR-X of German high-resolution X-band SAR satellite and KOMPSAT-5 of South Korea, and object-oriented image classification method using the image segmentation technique is applied for extraction. In addition, to improve the accuracy of image segmentation, the speckle divergence was first calculated to adjust the reflection intensity of settlement areas. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the two satellite images, settlement areas are classified by applying a pixel-based K-means image classification method. As a result, in the case of TerraSAR-X, the accuracy of the object-oriented image classification technique was 88.5%, that of the pixel-based image classification was 75.9%, and that of KOMPSAT-5 was 87.3% and 74.4%, respectively.

  • Recently, the use of high-resolution satellites is increasing in many areas. In order to supply useful satellite images stably, it is necessary to establish automatic precision geometric correction technic. Geometric correction is the process that corrected geometric errors of satellite imagery based on the GCP (Ground Control Point), which is correspondence point between accurate ground coordinates and image coordinates. Therefore, in the automatic geometric correction process, it is the key to acquire high-quality GCPs automatically. In this paper, we proposed iterative precision geometry correction method. we constructed an image pyramid and repeatedly performed GCP chip matching, outlier detection, and precision sensor modeling in each layer of the image pyramid. Through this method, we were able to acquire high-quality GCPs automatically. we then improved the performance of geometric correction of high-resolution satellite images. To analyze the performance of the proposed method, we used KOMPSAT-3 and 3A Level 1R 8 scenes. As a result of the experiment, the proposed method showed the geometric correction accuracy of 1.5 pixels on average and a maximum of 2 pixels.

  • In this study, calibration processes and methods of evaluating the radiometric quality of satellite images from the meteorological payload on the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A were described. MTF(Modulation Transfer Function), SNR(Signal-To-Noise Ratio), NEdT(Noise Equivalent Delta Temperature), and Dynamic Range, which are the major parameters for assessment of data radiometric quality of space-borne visible and infrared sensors, are focused. Key process of the quality check of the satellite data is the comparing the image radiometric performance parameters during the In-Oribit Test with those acquired from the ground tests. Validation plan of the image quality of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A Meteorological Imager is addressed based on the analyses results of COMS MI data during the COMS In-Orbit Test period

  • The existing field survey and aerial photography involve the waste of manpower and economic loss in the coastline survey. To minimize these disadvantages, the digitization for efficient coastline extraction was conducted in this study using the points extracted from the standard coastline of the approximate highest high water and the diverse satellite images (KOMPSAT-3, SPOT-5, Landsat-8 and Quickbird-2), and the comparative accuracy analysis was conducted. The differences between the standard coastline points of the approximate highest high water and the coastline of each satellite were smallest for KOMPSAT-3, followed by Quickbird-2, SPOT-5 and Landsat-8. The significant probability from between the multipurpose applications satellite and Quickbird-2 (significant probability two-tailed) was statistically significant at 1% significance level. Therefore, high-resolution satellite images are required to efficiently extract the coastline, and KOMPSAT-3, from which images are easily acquired at a low cost, will enable the most efficient coastline extraction without external support.

  • This study conducted pilot mapping project to know the possibility of mapping with medium resolution satellite imageries. For this purpose, mapping experiments were conducted with each stereo model imageries of SPOT, KOMPSAT, and IRS- lC. And positional accuracy, analysis of detectable and describable features, and comparison with existing digital map were checked, possible mapping scale and cost analysis were conducted with these results. Regarding SPOT imagery, digital photogrammetric workstation was used for stereoplotting. Regarding KOMPSAT and IRS-lC imageries, because there were data format support problems. head-up digitizing was performed with ortho imageries rectified with DEMs generated by image matching. The results of experiments show that such features as wide road, river, coast line, etc are possible to detect and depict but many other features are not for SPOT, KOMPSAT, and IRS-lC imageries. On the aspect of mapping, therefore, SPOT is available for 1/50,000 topographic map revision, KOMPSAT and IRS-lC for 1/25.000 topographic map revision.

  • The increasing interest in soil moisture data from satellite imagery for applications in hydrology, meteorology, and agriculture has led to the development of methods to produce variable-resolution soil moisture maps. Research on accurate soil moisture estimation using satellite imagery is essential for remote sensing applications. The purpose of this study is to generate a soil moisture estimation map for a test area using KOMPSAT-3/3A and KOMPSAT-5 SAR imagery and to quantitatively compare the results with soil moisture data from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission provided by NASA, with a focus on accuracy validation. In addition, the Korean Environmental Geographic Information Service (EGIS) land cover map was used to determine soil moisture, especially in agricultural and forested regions. The selected test area for this study is the western part of Jeju, South Korea, where input data were available for the soil moisture estimation algorithm based on the Water Cloud Model (WCM). Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery from KOMPSAT-5 HV and Sentinel-1 VV were used for soil moisture estimation, while vegetation indices were calculated from the surface reflectance of KOMPSAT-3 imagery. Comparison of the derived soil moisture results with SMAP (L-3) and SMAP (L-4) data by differencing showed a mean difference of 4.13±3.60 p% and 14.24±2.10 p%, respectively, indicating a level of agreement. This research suggests the potential for producing highly accurate and precise soil moisture maps using future South Korean satellite imagery and publicly available data sources, as demonstrated in this study.
