This study was carried out to find out the way to build a comprehensive wetland ecosystem database using the technique of remote sensing and Geographic Information System. A Landsat TM image (taken in Oct. 30, 2002), Kompsat-2 images (Jan. 17, 2008 & Nov. 20, 2008), LiDAR(Mar. 1, 2009) were used for the primary source for the image analysis. Field surveys were conducted March to August of 2009 to help image analysis and examine the results. An actual wetland vegetation map was created based on the field survey. Satellite images were analyzed by unsupervised and supervised classification methods and finally categorized into such classes as Phragmites australis community, mixed community, sand beach, Scirpus planiculmis community and non-vegetation intertidal area. The map of wetland productivity was developed based on the productivity of Phragmites australis and the relationship to the proximity of adjacent water bodies. The developed 3 dimensional wetland map showed such several potential applications as flood inundation, birds flyway viewsheds and benthos distribution. Considering these results, we concluded that it is possible to use the remote sensing and GIS techniques for producing wetland ecosystem spatial database and these techniques are very effective for the development of the national wetland inventory in Korea.

With the launch of Compact Advanced Satellite 500 series of various characteristics and the operation of KOMPSAT-3/3A, uses of high-resolution satellite images have been continuously increased. Especially, in order to provide satellite images in the form of ARD (Analysis Ready Data), various pre-processing such as geometric correction and radiometric correction have been developed. For pre-processing of high spatial satellite imagery, auxiliary information, such as solar zenith, solar azimuth and offnadir angle, should be required. However, most of the high-resolution satellite images provide the solar zenith and nadir angle for the entire image as a single variable. In this paper, the solar zenith and offnadir angle corresponding to each pixel of the image were calculated using RFM (Rational Function Model) and auxiliary information of the image, and the quality of extracted information were evaluated. In particular, for the utilization of pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle, pixel-based auxiliary data were applied in calculating the top of atmospheric reflectance, and comparative evaluation with a single constant-based top of atmospheric reflectance was performed. In the experiments using various satellite imagery, the pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle information showed a similar tendency to the auxiliary information of satellite sensor, and it was confirmed that the distortion was reduced in the calculated reflectance in the top of atmospheric reflectance.

Aquaculture has historically delivered marine products because the country is surrounded by ocean on three sides. Surveys on production have been conducted recently to systematically manage aquaculture facilities. Based on survey results, pricing controls on marine products has been implemented to stabilize local fishery resources and to ensure minimum income for fishermen. Such surveys on aquaculture facilities depend on manual digitization of aerial photographs each year. These surveys that incorporate manual digitization using high-resolution aerial photographs can accurately evaluate aquaculture with the knowledge of experts, who are aware of each aquaculture facility's characteristics and deployment of those facilities. However, using aerial photographs has monetary and time limitations for monitoring aquaculture resources with different life cycles, and also requires a number of experts. Therefore, in this study, we investigated an automatic prototype system for detecting boundary information and monitoring aquaculture facilities based on satellite images. KOMPSAT-3 (13 Scene), a local high-resolution satellite provided the satellite imagery collected between October and April, a time period in which many aquaculture facilities were operating. The ANN classification method was used for automatic detecting such as cage, longline and buoy type. Furthermore, shape files were generated using a digitizing image processing method that incorporates polygon generation techniques. In this study, our newly developed prototype method detected aquaculture facilities at a rate of 93%. The suggested method overcomes the limits of existing monitoring method using aerial photographs, but also assists experts in detecting aquaculture facilities. Aquaculture facility detection systems must be developed in the future through application of image processing techniques and classification of aquaculture facilities. Such systems will assist in related decision-making through aquaculture facility monitoring.

The aim of this study is to produce land cover maps using satellite imagery with various degrees of high resolution and then compare the accuracy of the image types and categories. For the land cover map produced on a small-scale classification the estuary area around the Nakdong river, including an urban area, farming land and waters, was selected. The images were classified by analyzing the aerial photos taken from KOMPSAT2, Quickbird and IKONOS satellites, which all have a resolution of over 1m to the naked eye. Once all of the land cover maps with different images and land cover categories had been produced they were compared to each other. Results show that image accuracy from the aerial photos and Quickbird was relatively higher than with KOMPSAT2 and IKONOS. The agreement ratio for the large-scale classification across the classification methods ranged between 0.934 and 0.956 for most cases. The Kappa value ranged between 0.905 and 0.937; the agreement ratio for the middle-scale classification was 0.888~0.913 and the Kappa value was 0.872~0.901. The agreement ratio for the small-scale classification was 0.833~0.901 and the Kappa value was 0.813~0.888. In addition, in terms of the degree of confusion occurrence across the images, there was confusion on the urbanized arid areas and empty land in the large-scale classification. For the middle-scale classification, the confusion mainly occurred on the rice paddies, fields, house cultivating area and artificial grassland. For the small-scale classification, confusion mainly occurred on natural green fields, cultivating land with facilities, tideland and the surface of the sea. The findings of this study indicate that the classification of the high resolution images with the naked eye showed an agreement ratio of over 80%, which means that it can be used in practice. The findings also suggest that the use of higher resolution images can lead to increased accuracy in classification, indicating that the time when the images are taken is important in producing land cover maps.
In this paper, we introduce the SSResUNet network model, which integrates the SPADE structure with the U-Net network model for accurate land cover classification using high-resolution satellite imagery without requiring user intervention. The proposed network possesses the advantage of preserving the spatial characteristics inherent in satellite imagery, rendering it a robust classification model even in intricate environments. Experimental results, obtained through training on KOMPSAT-3A satellite images, exhibit superior performance compared to conventional U-Net and U-Net++ models, showcasing an average Intersection over Union (IoU) of 76.10 and a Dice coefficient of 86.22.

Building change monitoring based on building detection is one of the most important fields in terms of monitoring artificial structures using high-resolution multi-temporal images such as CAS500-1 and 2, which are scheduled to be launched. However, not only the various shapes and sizes of buildings located on the surface of the Earth, but also the shadows or trees around them make it difficult to detect the buildings accurately. Also, a large number of misdetection are caused by relief displacement according to the azimuth and elevation angles of the platform. In this study, object-based building detection was performed using the azimuth angle of the Sun and the corresponding main direction of shadows to improve the results of building change detection. After that, the platform's azimuth and elevation angles were used to detect changed buildings. The object-based segmentation was performed on a high-resolution imagery, and then shadow objects were classified through the shadow intensity, and feature information such as rectangular fit, Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) homogeneity and area of each object were calculated for building candidate detection. Then, the final buildings were detected using the direction and distance relationship between the center of building candidate object and its shadow according to the azimuth angle of the Sun. A total of three methods were proposed for the building change detection between building objects detected in each image: simple overlay between objects, comparison of the object sizes according to the elevation angle of the platform, and consideration of direction between objects according to the azimuth angle of the platform. In this study, residential area was selected as study area using high-resolution imagery acquired from KOMPSAT-3 and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Experimental results have shown that F1-scores of building detection results detected using feature information were 0.488 and 0.696 respectively in KOMPSAT-3 image and UAV image, whereas F1-scores of building detection results considering shadows were 0.876 and 0.867, respectively, indicating that the accuracy of building detection method considering shadows is higher. Also among the three proposed building change detection methods, the F1-score of the consideration of direction between objects according to the azimuth angles was the highest at 0.891.
In high-resolution satellite image classification, when the color values of pixels belonging to one class are different, such as buildings with various colors, it is difficult to determine the color information representing the class. In this paper, to solve the problem of determining the representative color information of a class, we propose a method to divide the color channel of HSV (Hue Saturation Value) and perform object-based classification. To this end, after transforming the input image of the RGB color space into the components of the HSV color space, the Hue component is divided into subchannels at regular intervals. The minimum distance-based image classification is performed for each hue subchannel, and the classification result is combined with the image segmentation result. As a result of applying the proposed method to KOMPSAT-3A imagery, the overall accuracy was 84.97% and the kappa coefficient was 77.56%, and the classification accuracy was improved by more than 10% compared to a commercial software.
Urban is an area where small-scale changes to individual buildings occur frequently. An existing urban building database requires periodic updating to increase its usability. However, there are limitations in data collection for building changes over a wide urban. In this study, we check the possibility of detecting building changes and updating a building database by using satellite images that can capture a wide urban region by a single image. For this purpose, building areas in a satellite image are first extracted by projecting 3D coordinates of building corners available in a building database onto the image. Building areas are then divided into roof and facade areas. By comparing textures of the roof areas projected, building changes such as height change or building removal can be detected. New height values are estimated by adjusting building heights until projected roofs align to actual roofs observed in the image. If the projected image appeared in the image while no building is observed, it corresponds to a demolished building. By checking buildings in the original image whose roofs and facades areas are not projected, new buildings are identified. Based on these results, the building database is updated by the three categories of height update, building deletion, or new building creation. This method was tested with a KOMPSAT-3A image over Incheon Metropolitan City and Incheon building database available in public. Building change detection and building database update was carried out. Updated building corners were then projected to another KOMPSAT-3 image. It was confirmed that building areas projected by updated building information agreed with actual buildings in the image very well. Through this study, the possibility of semi-automatic building change detection and building database update based on single satellite image was confirmed. In the future, follow-up research is needed on technology to enhance computational automation of the proposed method.
In order to get high quality and high resolution image data from the space-borne camera system, the image chain from the sensor to the user in the ground-station need to be designed and controlled with extreme care. The behavior of the camera system needs to be controlled by ground commands to support on-orbit calibration and to adjust imaging parameters and to perform early stage on-orbit image correction, like gain and offset control, non-uniformity correction, etc. The operation status including the temperature of the sensor needs to be transferred to the ground-station. The preparation time of the camera system for imaging with specific parameters should be minimized. The camera controller needs to synchronize the operation of cameras for every channel and for every spectral band. Detail timing information of the image data needs to be provided for image data correction at ground-station. In this paper, the design of the camera controller for the AEISS on KOMPSAT-3 will be introduced. It will be described how the image chain is controlled and which imaging parameters are to be adjusted The camera controller will have software for the flexible operation of the camera by the ground-station operators and it can be reconfigured by ground commands. A simple concept of the camera operations and the design of the camera controller, not only with hardware but also with controller software are to be introduced in this paper.
This article presents a new method for semi-automatic extraction of building information (height, shape, and footprint location) from monoscopic urban scenes. The proposed method is to expand Semi-automatic Volumetric Shadow Analysis (SVSA), which can handle occluded building footprints or shadows semi-automatically. SVSA can extract wrong building information from a single high resolution satellite image because SVSA is influenced by extracted shadow area, image noise and objects around a building. The proposed method can reduce the disadvantage of SVSA by using multi-spectral images. The proposed method applies SVSA to panchromatic and multi-spectral images. Results of SVSA are used as parameters of a cost function. A building height with maximum value of the cost function is determined as actual building height. For performance evaluation, building heights extracted by SVSA and the proposed method from Kompsat-2 images were compared with reference heights extracted from stereo IKONOS. The result of performance evaluation shows the proposed method is a more accurate and stable method than SVSA.
