  • We explicate the forming mechanism of Sasang constitution as the principle of energy distribution which is based on the evolutionary hypothesis. The result was obtained as follows: 1. The principle of form-image (形象) in oriental medicine can be explained with the relation between structure and function that a life acquires through the adaptation and evolution. 2. The Sung-jung (性情) in Sasang constitutional medicine can be explained as the strategy for survival or the pattern of adaptation by which an individual or a species lives in this world. 3. The forming mechanism of Sasang constitutional organic phase (臟局) can be explained as the principle of energy distribution which includes three hypothesis (hypothesis of limited resources, hypothesis of preference and hypothesis of effectiveness). 4. It is postulated that the local hemodynamics is one of the most important factors that determine the difference of Sasang constitutional organic function. 5. The relation of metabolic rate, local hemodynamics and thermo-metabolism is inseparable and it is the important point of forming mechanism of Sasang constitution and the diagnosis of pulse.

  • Banhabaekchulchhonma-tang is a traditional Korean herbal prescription with a range of pharmacological activities. In this study, the simultaneous analysis of 12 kinds of marker components, Homogentisic acid, Hesperidin, Naringin, Alisol A, Atractylenolide II, Atractylenolide III, Ginsenoside Rg1, Formononetin, Gastrodin, Berberine, Palmatine and 6-gingerol, in Banhabaekchulchhonma-tang was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The standard sample of commercial $C_{18}$ reversed phase-column using water (0.1% TFA) and acetonitrile as the mobile phase with a step gradient elution mode. The flow rate (1.0mL/min), injection volume ($10{\mu}L$) and column oven temperature ($40^{\circ}C$) at a 200, 220, 280 and 340nm wavelength was conducted. All calibration curves of the standard components showed good linearity ($r^2$ >0.999). In addition, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.012 to $0.878{\mu}g/mL$ and 0.009 to $0.290{\mu}g/mL$. The precision intra-day and inter-day were ranged from 0.07 to 1.21% and 0.20 to 0.90%, respectively. The recoveries ranged from 97.17 to 108.40%. Each sample amount showed a very small change. These results highlight the efficient quality evaluation of Banhabaekchulchhonma-tang.

  • Introduction: This study aims to investigate the effects of acupuncture stimulation on the radial artery's pressure pulse wave, along with various hemodynamic parameters, and to explore the possible underlying mechanism of pulse diagnosis in healthy participants in their twenties. Methods and analysis: This study is a prospective, single-arm, exploratory clinical study. A total of 25 healthy participants, without regard to gender, in their twenties will be recruited by physicians. Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. The participants will receive acupuncture once at ST36 on both sides. The radial arterial pulse waves will be measured on the left arm of the subjects by using an applicable pulse tonometric device (KIOM-PAS). On the right arm (appearing twice), electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), respiration and cardiac output (CO) signals, will be measured using a physiological data acquisition system (Biopac module), while the velocity of blood flow, and the diameter and the depth of the blood vessel will be measured using an ultrasonogram machine on the right arm (appearing twice). All measurements will be conducted before, during, and after acupuncture. The primary outcome will be the spectral energy at high frequencies above 10 Hz ($SE_{10-30Hz}$) calculated from the KIOM-PAS device signal. Secondary outcomes will be various variables obtained from the KIOM-PAS device, ECG, PPG, impedance cardiography modules, and an ultrasonogram machine. Discussion: The results of this trial will provide information regarding the physiological and the hemodynamic mechanisms underlying acupuncture stimulation and clinical evidence for the influence of acupuncture on the pressure pulse wave in the radial artery. Ethics and dissemination: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Kyung Hee University's Oriental Medical Center, Seoul, Korea (KOMCIRB-150818-HR-030). The study findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Trial registration number: This trial was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS) at the Korea National Institute of Health (NIH), Republic of Korea (KCT0001663), which is a registry in the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Registry Network.

  • Here, we present an updated checklist based on voucher specimens of vascular plants for Gasan Mt. which is located in Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The list includes 322 taxa in 212 genera and 81 families of vascular plants, of which 14 are endemic, six are rare plants, 48 are floristic target species, and 14 are considered naturalized in Korea. Based on voucher specimens, Gasan Mt. was the southern limit of Cimicifuga heracleifolia var. bifida Nakai and Iris odaesanensis Y. N. Lee on the Korean peninsula. Moreover, we confirmed a hybrid plant deriving from two Iris parents, I. minutoaurea Makino and I. odaesanensis, in a mountain fortress of Gasan Mt. We also present online databases including 325 voucher specimens deposited at the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine (KIOM; http://oasis.kiom.re.kr/herblib). This study has great significance as the first floristic study of Korean plants sharing virtual specimens online.

  • A proper understanding of 'diagnosis and treatment based on overall analysis of symptoms and signs' can result in efficient clinical effect. Studies on the ${\lceil}$Medical Recoreds as a Guide to Diagnosis${\rfloor}$ can be expected to achieve a part of this purpose. In this study, the period, author, xylographica, contents and influence of next generation of ${\lceil}$Medical Records as a Guide to Diagnosis${\rfloor}$were investigated. Tian shi and his 12 followers completed thsis Medical recoreds with clinical experiences and data obtained throughout their lives. These books were first published in 1764. Since then these books have been published twenty times based on the first edition. These books are comprised of 10 volumes, from ${\lceil}$volume 1${\rfloor}$to ${\lceil}$volum 8${\rfloor}$are internal medicine, ${\lceil}$volum 9${\rfloor}$ is gynecology, ${\lceil}$volum 10${\rfloor}$ is pediatrics. The contents are as follows; 'method of regluating astenia-syndrome' , 'diagnosis and treatment based on overall analysis of symptoms and signs on eight extra meridians', 'theory of Yang forms endogenous wind-syndrome', 'theory of spleen-energy rise up and stomach-energy descend', 'theory of stmach-Yeum', 'diagnosis and treatment based on overall analysis of symptoms and signs on collaterals'. Tian shi completed his work by compling the previous medical theories and through clinical studies. It is expected that his theories are effectively applied to improve clinical medicine.
