An instrument using thermal probe method was designed to measure thermal conductivity of liquid and solid foods. Thermal conductivity probe was designed with diameter to length ratio of 100 and diameter of 0.51 mm to minimize axial flow effect on thermal conductivity measurement. Thermal conductivities of distilled/deionized water, glycerin, and beef frankfurter meat were measured at $20-80^{\circ}C$. Mean thermal conductivity values of water showed less than 2.0% difference from several reference values without using time correction factor or probe calibration constant. For glycerin, difference was less than 0.7% from reference values at $20-50^{\circ}C$. Mean values of thermal conductivity for beef frankfurter meat ranged from 0.389 to $0.350\;W/m{\cdot}K$ at $20-80^{\circ}C$.
In order to standardize the ${\sigma}^*,\;{\rho}^*$ is taken as unity for the benzoic acids by analogy with the fact that ${\rho}$ of benzoic acids in the ground state is taken as unity. The $pK_{\alpha}^*$ of many benzoic acid derivatives are determined by UV spectroscopy and fluorescence spectral analysis whenever possible. The ${\sigma}^*$ constants are derived from the Hammett equation utilizing these $pK_{\alpha}^*$ values and the $pK_{\alpha}^*$ of the benozic acid derivatives showed better correlationship with ${\sigma}^*$ than ${\sigma},\;{\sigma}^+\;and\;{\sigma}^-$ as expected. From these ${\sigma}^*$ values, ${\rho}^*$ of the phenol derivatives was calculated to be 1.28. The new standardized ${\sigma}^*$ values are calculated from the $pK_{\alpha}^*$ values of phenols since more accurate and abundant data are available for phenols than the benzoic acid derivatives.
Objectives: The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES), a multicenter-based multi-cohort study, has collected information on body composition using two different bioelectrical impedence analysis (BIA) machines. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility of whether the test values measured from different BIA machines can be integrated through statistical adjustment algorithm under excellent inter-rater reliability. Methods: We selected two centers to measure inter-rater reliability of the two BIA machines. We set up the two machines side by side and measured subjects' body compositions between October and December 2007. Duplicated test values of 848 subjects were collected. Pearson and intra-class correlation coefficients for inter-rater reliability were estimated using results from the two machines. To detect the feasibility for data integration, we constructed statistical compensation models using linear regression models with residual analysis and R-square values. Results: All correlation coefficients indicated excellent reliability except mineral mass. However, models using only duplicated body composition values for data integration were not feasible due to relatively low $R^2$ values of 0.8 for mineral mass and target weight. To integrate body composition data, models adjusted for four empirical variables that were age, sex, weight and height were most ideal (all $R^2$ > 0.9). Conclusions: The test values measured with the two BIA machines in the KoGES have excellent reliability for the nine body composition values. Based on reliability, values can be integrated through algorithmic statistical adjustment using regression equations that includes age, sex, weight, and height.

GCM and scenario uncertainties are first investigated for 5 major watersheds (Han River, Paldang dam, Namhan River, Bukhan River and Imjin River watersheds). As a result of this study, it is found that CCSM3-based annual precipitation increases linearly with respect to the 10-year moving average values while CSIRO-based precipitation does not show much of trend. The results from annual DJF mean precipitation show a similar trend with respect to their 10-year moving average values. Both CCSM3- and CSIRO-based annual JJA mean precipitation do not show much of trend toward 21st century. In general, CCSM3-based precipitation values are slightly higher than CSIRO-based values with respect to their annual and annual JJA mean precipitation values, but CSIRO-based annual DJF mean precipitation values are slightly higher than CCSM3-based values. In case of mean air temperature between CCSM3 and CSIRO during 21st century, all of results show a clear trend in warming with the passage of time for 5 watersheds. However the upward trends from CCSM3-based values slow down toward end of 21stcentury while CSRIO-based values increases almost linearly.

Many Koreans have recently bleached their black hair to blond or a light color due to the influence of their favorite Korean idols. Bleaching effects were studied under various bleaching conditions, such as the concentration of oxidants, the ratio between bleach accelerant and oxidant, and treatment temperature and time. The degree of damage of bleached hair with the same color difference (${\Delta}E$) intervals was observed in SEM images, the retention of breaking load and the change of color after dyeing. The ratio between bleach accelerant and oxidant of 1:2.5 was an effective condition. $L^*$ values of the bleached hair treated with 9% oxidant increased to 90 min. At a treatment temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, $a^*$ values were maximum at 30 min and then decreased as time further increased; however, $b^*$ values of the bleached hair increased as the treatment time increased. At $45^{\circ}C$, both of $a^*$ and $b^*$ values showed a maximum at a specific time. Bleaching efficiency was influenced most by temperature, followed in order by time, and oxidant concentration. As the treatment time increased, $L^*$ values greatly increased with twice treatment; however, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values decreased. Bleached hair, which had a color difference of higher than 30, showed the scales were completely removed and the retention of the breaking load greatly decreased. Highly bleached hair showed a great decrease in $L^*$ values by dyeing; however, dyeing with bright colors was more indicative to the effect of bleaching.
The effects of electrolyte on dyeing properties of cotton fiber with Congo Red have been studied at 90, 70 and $40^{\circ}C$. Each dyeing carried into an infinite bath with $1\times10^{-4}$ mol/l of Congo Red and with various concentration of electrolytes. The results obtained from this study were as follow; 1. The equilibrium adsorption of dye $(C_\infty)$ values decreased with increasing dyeing temperature, $C_\infty$ values increased in the order KCl>NaCl>LiCl. 2. The values of apparent diffusion coefficients $(D_a)$ increased with increasing dyeing temperature, but $D_a$ values decreased in the order KCl$D_a$ values decreased with increasing electrolyte concentration. 4. Effect of electrolytes decreased with increasing dyeing temperature. 5. The values of standard affinities of dyeing $(-\triangle\mu^{\circ})$, the standard heats of dyeing $(-\triangleH^{\circ})$, and the standard entropies $(-\triangleS^{\circ})$, increased in the order KCl>NaCl>LiCl. 6. Equilibrium adsorption isotherm curve were Freundlich type, and in the Equation y=a.x$^{n}$ , the values of a and n increased in the order KCl>NaCl>LiCl. 7. The value of $-\triangle\mu^{\circ}$, $-\triangleH^{\circ}$, and $-\triangleS^{\circ}$, decreased with increasing electrolyte concentration.
The aim of this paper is to discuss the effect of missing values in detecting differentially expressed genes in a cDNA microarray experiment in the context of a one sample problem. We conducted a cDNA micro array experiment to detect differentially expressed genes for the metastasis of colorectal cancer based on twenty patients who underwent liver resection due to liver metastasis from colorectal cancer. Total RNAs from metastatic liver tumor and adjacent normal liver tissue from a single patient were labeled with cy5 and cy3, respectively, and competitively hybridized to a cDNA microarray with 7775 human genes. We used $M=log_2(R/G)$ for the signal evaluation, where Rand G denoted the fluorescent intensities of Cy5 and Cy3 dyes, respectively. The statistical problem comprises a one sample test of testing E(M)=0 for each gene and involves multiple tests. The twenty cDNA microarray data would comprise a matrix of dimension 7775 by 20, if there were no missing values. However, missing values occur for various reasons. For each gene, the no missing proportion (NMP) was defined to be the proportion of non-missing values out of twenty. In detecting differentially expressed (DE) genes, we used the genes whose NMP is greater than or equal to 0.4 and then sequentially increased NMP by 0.1 for investigating its effect on the detection of DE genes. For each fixed NMP, we imputed the missing values with K-nearest neighbor method (K=10) and applied the nonparametric t-test of Dudoit et al. (2002), SAM by Tusher et al. (2001) and empirical Bayes procedure by $L\ddot{o}nnstedt$ and Speed (2002) to find out the effect of missing values in the final outcome. These three procedures yielded substantially agreeable result in detecting DE genes. Of these three procedures we used SAM for exploring the acceptable NMP level. The result showed that the optimum no missing proportion (NMP) found in this data set turned out to be 80%. It is more desirable to find the optimum level of NMP for each data set by applying the method described in this note, when the plot of (NMP, Number of overlapping genes) shows a turning point.

Investigations for hematologic and biochemical values for Gyeongju DongGyeong dogs were performed. This study were conducted to determine normal blood and serum chemical values on DongGyeong dogs. Normal blood and serum chemical values were studied in 47 healthy dogs (male 28, female 19). The hematologic and serum chemistry results were confirmed by age, sex, shape of tail. The hematological values showed no difference from Korea native dogs. The hematocrit values ($49.0{\pm}8.1$(%)) of DongGyeong dogs (2-3 years group) were significantly higher than other dogs. The mean levels of MCV ($61.6{\pm}3.8({\mu}m^3)$) in DongGyeong dogs were lower than general dogs. The levels of cholesterol($220{\pm}80.5$(mg/dl)) and inorganic phosphorus ($3.6{\pm}1.0$ (mg/dl)) of DongGyeong dogs (2~3 years group) were significantly higher than Korea native dogs. Totally concentration of triglyceride ($66.2{\pm}17.0$ (mg/dl)) of DongGyeong dogs were significantly lower than Korea native dogs. The mean values of BUN were increased with age but no significantly. In conclusion, data obtained from this study may be valuable as a standard for interpretation of the results in hematologic and biochemical analysis of Gyeongju DongGyeong dog populations.
