  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival rate of sintered porous-surfaced implants placed in the edentulous posterior mandibles, in relation to implant length and diameter, crown-to-implant ratio, and types of prostheses, for a maximum of eight years of functioning. Material and Methods : The study group consisted of 43 partially edentulous patients who visited Catholic University Hospital of Daegu and one private dental clinic. A total of 122 sintered porous-surfaced implants n $Endopore^{(R)}$ (Inn ova Life Sciences, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) -- were placed in the edentulous posterior mandibles, Two diameter sizes (4.1 mm and 5.0 mm) and four lengths (5.0 mm, 7.0 mm, 9.0 mm, and 12.0 mm) were used. One hundred and three implants were splinted and 21 implants were nonsplinted. The survival rates of the implants in relation to length, diameter, crown-to-implant ratio, and types of prostheses were investigated. Statistical data were analyzed using SPSS Win.Ver 14.0 software with the Chi-square test. Results : The survival rate of the 4.1mm diameter implants was 100% and 91.2% for the 5.0mm diameter implants. The survival rates of the implants of differing diameters were found to be statistically different (p=0.005). The survival rates of both the 5.0mm and 7.0 mm length implants were 100%. The survival rate of the 9.0mm length implants was 97.9% and for the 12.0mm length implants was 95.1%. There was no statistical difference in survival rates for the differing lengths of implants. Of the 103 prostheses that were splinted, the survival rate was 98.0%. The survival rate of splinted prostheses was higher than that of the non-splinted prostheses, but was found to be not statistically different. There were no failed cases when the crown-to-implant ratio was under 1.0. When the crown-to-implant ratio was between 1.0 and 1.5, the failure rate of the implants was 6.7%. No failure was recorded with the ratio range of 1.5 to 2.0. Relative to the crown-to-implant ratio of 1.0, the failure rates were statistically different (p=0.048). Discussion and Conclusion : The cumulative survival rate of the porous-surfaced implants placed in the edentulous posterior mandibles was 97.5%. Short porous-surfaced implants showed satisfactory results after a maximum of nine years of functioning in the edentulous posterior mandibles.

  • The trends of Chinese and Yanbian University's reform were studied in this work. Although the history of Chinese modem university education is short, and all Chinese Universities experienced same social problems, however, development of each university was different. Especially after 90's, with applying socialism market economy theory, Chinese university education have changed a lot. Main conclusions were summarized as follows. First, to exert university's self-determination, University management system was changed. More and more rights and freedoms of operating university were given to universities which were originally controlled by central and local government. With that, universities were cheered to develop extensively based on its ability. Second, efforts to fit market economy were observed. It reflects in all aspects, such as systems of university financing, operating, admission and graduation of students. Third, professor competition system was adopted to promote professors enthusiasm. Forth, to survival in hot competition among universities, differentiation policy was applied. In brief, it could be said that rapid developments of Chinese university education have achieved recently. However, problems such as universities are still under supervision of central and local government: expand of university scale rather than education quality was focused on: limit of investment to university: lack of legal protection for finical supporting: lack of university democratization were still remain. • National competitiveness is related directly to the strength of educational competitiveness of universities. Seoul National University (SNU) has been taking efforts to improve its competitiveness in University education in variety of ways and the classroom assessment is one key example of those. The current classroom assessment system practiced at universities is being used to evaluate courses and professors in charge by the university administration or evaluation committee. The classroom assessment system is not intended to put students and professors as the subject of the evaluation. In this case, the evaluation is intended wrongfully to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement by assigning grades on the lectures. Instead, a proper classroom assessment system should be targeted to improve the quality of lectures by encouraging communication among professor and students in the classroom. In this study, it was intended to investigate a suitable classroom assessment system to enhance the effectiveness of education, not to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement. For this purpose, research has been carried out to investigate opinions of professors at SNU on the criteria of classroom assessment and to analyze the criteria of classroom assessment at other domestic universities in Korea. The inquiries for feedback on the lecture by the student in the class was analyzed. The current classroom assessment system at SNU was reviewed and an improvement plan was devised to evaluate liberal art courses of engineering and science schools at SNU. In this research, the problems in the classroom assessment system was reviewed and improvement points were searched to utilize the classroom assessment system more effectively for the improvement of lecture quality.

  • In the modern society, the adolescence needs the career development competency which makes them probe changing social phenomenon critically and use the given environment and resources progressively. Thus, adolescence should be offered with the career development competency education, but the education in the school fields remains as school entrance coaching focusing on the academic clique and career coaching as a mere job education. As a result, the study connection between high school and university was destroyed and it caused students' study-unfitness and dropouts after the university entrance. Hence, career education to culture major suitability of high school students in the new paradigm should be developed through high school-university connection. So, this study developed a career education program through the collaboration among the professor of college of human ecology, a home economics specialist, undergraduates majoring in human ecology, and a high school student, using the ADDIE model. The result of this study is as followed. First, this study searched for the direction of the program for the career development competency reinforcement of high school students. • The purpose of this study is to implement evaluation on domestic cyber University web site to analyze web usability and web accessibility in order to present how much cyber University provides various personalized services and qualitative contents to users on web site. And also with this result, I hope to contribute in qualitative development of web site and reliability of remote education. For this purpose, I developed checklist suitable to remote University by applying SM-ABCDE assessment method of Moonhyeongnam, the professor in Sookmyung Women's University, and implemented evaluation on web sites of 17 cyber University over the five aspects of attraction, business, contents, design, and engineering. As the result of this study, it was found that Busan Digital University was best in the respect of attraction, both Kyunghee Cyber University and Cyber University of foreign studies were best in the respect of business, Kyunghee University was best in the respect of contents, and Hanyang Cyber University was best in the respect of design. It was also evaluated in the comprehensive view and the order was found that Kyunghee Cyber University, Busan Cyber University, and Hanyang Cyber University. However in the respect of engineering, it came out that all the sites did not observe the regulation on web accessibility. If domestic Cyber Universities are to observe the regulation on web accessibility with the long term view, on the base of this study, web usability would be increasing. Then they can secure various classes of customers as well as ordinary people so that they will be able to take the real place of educational institution orienting the most advanced educational method in the society of knowledge and information in addition to advance in themselves.

  • Objectives : The most frequently cited health related slogan in North Korea is that socialistic medicine is preventive medicine. It implies that North Korea puts preventive medicine at the operational center of its national health care system. This study aimed at examining and comparing preventive medicine practices in North Korea with those of South Korea. Methods : Efforts have been made to obtain a textbook for analysis its contents. Many people have iassisted in the study by joining the interview. Some of these people are as follows : a former professor of PyongYang Medical School, NK physicians living in South Korea, WHO staffs, diplomatic officials, etc. The major items of analysis consisted of industrial medicine and hygiene, nutrition, school health, epidemiology, health statistics and heath policy & management. Results : Public health philosophy is finely noted and well integrated in the operation of the North Korean national health care system, particularly in the area of industrial medicine and hygiene. Preventive medicine with a strong health surveillance system spanning a number of broad social organizations is a major tool to improve the health of the people in North Korea. The emphasis on preventive medicine has a close relationship with the 'Juche Philosophy' and the shortage of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. To cope with the shortage problem, North Korean health workers are encouraged to grow medicinal herbs. We have found that they put little effort into teaching newly emerging diseases, such as AIDS, VDT syndrome, hazards of EMF, and agricultural chemical poisonings. Of the subjects of the preventive medicine text, 78.9% coincide with those of South Korean industrial health manuals and 34.2% with South Korean epidemiology texts. However, an absolute difference was found to exist between the health policies and management systems. Conclusion : In North Korea, the concept of preventive medicine functions as the basic philosophic strategy of the national health care system. It differs greatly from the South Korean system in both practice and educational content. Its contribution to society is simply incomparable to that of South Korea. More communication and further study is called for in order to improve the preventive medicine practices in the future.

  • We explored the influence of educational service quality on university image, student satisfaction, and word of mouth, as well as the causal association between university image, student satisfaction, and word of mouth. Second-order structural model testing was conducted with 274 questionnaires being used to analyze the hypotheses. The findings demonstrated, first, that educational service quality positively affected university image, student satisfaction, and word of mouth. The important sub-dimensions of educational service quality were teaching method, followed by lecture content, professor attitude, and communication through the second-order structural analysis. Second, university image positively affected student satisfaction and word of mouth. Third, student satisfaction positively affected word of mouth. Finally, for factor loading, the results of educational service quality indicated that teaching method(0.972) and lecture content(0.934) were the key factors in estimating the quality, revealing their significant and positive impact on university image, student satisfaction, and word of mouth. Thus, service providers should strengthen the teaching method and lecture content of educational service quality to enhance the university image, student satisfaction, and word of mouth of university performance from the perspective of university students.

  • Seismic analyses of structures were carried out in the past assuming a right base and Ignoring the characteristics of foundations and the properties of the underlying soil. Resent soil-structure interaction studies show that seismic response of structure can be affected significantly by these fators. Typical effects of the soil-structure interaction are the kinematic interaction of a rigid massiess foundation and the inertial interaction between underlying soil and structure. The kinematic interaction effect is particularly important for embedded foundations and can be ignored for surface foundations with vertically propagating waves. In this study, seismic response of structure was investigated with four buildings in Mexico City considering only the inertial interaction effect and using the E-W components of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake records. The study was carried out for surface foundations and pile foundations with linear and nonlinear soil conditions, comparing the results with those of the rigid base.
