Objectives : The aim of this study is to investigate Daesiho-tang(Dachaihu-tang) water extracts (DSTE) have potent anti-obesity activities in a high-fat diet-induced obesity mouse model. Methods : In this study, we designed three groups (normal diet group, high-fat diet group, high-fat diet plus DSTE group for 7-weeks oral administration). Results : Increases in body weight were inhibited by 7-weeks oral administration of DSTE at a 500 mg/kg concentration in this animal model. Results from blood lipid analysis showed that the levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were significantly lowered by DSTE administration, also HDL-cholesterol was increased more than high-fat diet-induced obese mouse. To understand the underlying mechanism at the molecular level, the effects of DSTE were examined on the expression of the genes involved in lipogenesis by real-time PCR. In epididymal fat and liver of DSTE-treated mice, the mRNA level of lipogenic genes such as sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 and fatty acid synthase were decreased, which was well correlated with the reduction of the tissues weight. Conclusions : These results suggest that DSTE may have great potential as a novel anti-obesity agent.
Objectives Physical activity is known to be beneficial to prevent weight gain and to be physically healthy. In this study, we tried to find out the relationship between body composition with physical activity. Methods International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ)-short form was given to premenopausal women aged 20~55 and BMI${\geq}23\;kg/m^2$. Subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue of the subjects by CT scanning was obtainedin a single slice. They were given written consent and this study is performed under the permission of institutional review board of Kyung Hee East-west Neo Medical Center. Results The mean of physical activity of total subjects was 1935.18 MET-min/week(n=63). When three groups of physical activity pattern(inactive, minimally active, and HEPA(Health-enhancing physical activity) active) was analyzed, all of them were heavily relied on the activity intensities of walking. The VSR(visceral/Subcutaneous adipose tissue Ratio) was correlated with total physical activity in vigorous activity group. Conclusions The physical activity of Korean obese and overweight women was on the average, but the vigorous activity is thought to be necessary. The vigorous physical activity was related with visceral adipose tissue.
Objectives : This study was performed to identify the efficacy and safety of ephedra and green tea mesotherapy on localized fat. Methods : Twenty-five healthy $20{\sim}35$ year overweight women (body mass $index{\geq}23kg/m^2$) were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups : experimental(mahuang and green tea) group (n=13), placebo(Normal saline) group (n=12). Total 8 times of herbarl mesotherapy treatment were performed once per week, 4 times were performed on right thigh (1st period), after wash-out for 1 week, the other 4 times were performed on left thigh (2nd period) without any modification of diet or exercise. Body composition, thigh circumferences were measured at each period before and after the intervention. Subcutaneous fat was measured by CT scan at before and after the 1st period of intervention and free fatty acid(FFA) was measured immediately before 1st intervention, 1 hour later, 24 hours later, and 7 days later. Satisfaction score and adverse events were evaluated. Results : In the subcutaneous fat, there were no significances, but in the circumferences. Experimental group had significant change when compared with placebo group (p<0.05). In FFA, experimental group has significant elevation at after 1 hour (p<0.05) evaluation. There were no serious adverse events in both groups. Conclusions : Experimental group had some significant findings in circumference, FFA, and had no serious adverse events comparing with placebo group, and no serious adverse events have been reported in both group. Mesotherapy with herb have a possibility of treating localized fat

Objectives This study was performed to figure out relations of self-esteem, anxiety and the other factors related with obesity in obese children. Methods Forty-two children(21 boys and 21 girls) those who were diagnosed obesity have been recruited. To assess psychological factors, Self-esteem inventory(SEI), Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale(RCMAS), International Physical Activity Questionnaires(IPAQ), Korean Eating Attitudes Test(KEAT-26) and Children's Depression Inventory(CDI) were administered. Behavioral characteristics were also analyzed. Results Self-esteem(SEI) had significant positive relationship with physical activity(IPAQ) and sleeping time. Self-esteem had significant negative relationship with anxiety(RCMAS), eating disorder(KEAT-26) and watching TV time. Anxiety had significant positive relationship with eating disorder(KEAT-26) and watching TV time, and negative relationship with physical activity(IPAQ) and sleeping time. All of participants seemed to be having depressive tendency. Conclusion Self-esteem and anxiety were significantly related. And eating disorder, physical activity, sleeping time and watching tv also affected to the self-esteem and anxiety of obese children.
Localized fat and cellulate have not only esthetic but health problem, they are treated by surgical or non-surgical method. There are elecro-acupuncture, ultrasound, radio frequency, endermologie, mesotherapy, and carbon dioxide therapy in prevalent non-surgical treatments. We reviewed the studies on them to analyze their seicntific evidence. The studies are not many. They reported good results of circumference loss or appearance improvement of histologic change but most of them have poor study design. Before marketing or using these modalities, it is ontcal to evaluate to their effectiveness through strict and scientific clinical trials.
Objectives : Obesity causes serious medical complications and impairs quality of life in older persons. We review the literature on the clinical issues related to obesity in elderly and suggest appropriate weight-management guidelines for obese older patients. Objectives This scoping review aimed to suggest a Korean medicine approach by analyzing domestic and international clinical studies targeting the thoracic sympathetic ganglia. Methods This study was conducted based on Arksey and O'Malley's five steps and guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension for scoping reviews checklist and appendix. We searched seven electronic databases for studies on thoracic sympathetic ganglia reported untill August 23, 2023. The search terms used were 'thoracic sympathetic chain', 'thoracic paravertebral sympathetic ganglia', and 'thoracic paravertebral ganglion'. Results One hundred twenty-nine studies were finally selected. 90 papers were non-comparative studies (69.8%). The most common disease or symptom was hyperhidrosis (n=109, 66.9%), associated with the T1-7 levels of thoracic sympathetic ganglia (n=107, 65.6%). There were 17 studies (13.2%) of percutaneous approaches targeting the thoracic sympathetic ganglia, five studies (3.1%) targeting the mid-lower thoracic sympathetic ganglia. Conclusions This study broadly analyzed trends in domestic and international research targeting the thoracic sympathetic ganglia and attempted to propose a future Korean medicine approach. Further studies are needed.
