  • This paper describes possible mechanism of the somatic referred pain. The study of somatic referred pain mechanism is necessary because many patients suffer from several types of muscle pain. This review compares the somatic referred pain with MPS(myofacial pain syndrome). There are similarities between these two pain mechanisms. But the therapeutics of somatic referred pain is yet remain fully unknown. Therefore this review consider origin of variable referred pain. Also it is recommendable to study referred pain mechanism in terms with oriental medical pain concept.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to establish evidence-based guideline on infrared therapy on acupoints. Methods : We investigated all the articles in websites including Pubmed, China national knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) and medical journals authorized by national research foundation of Korea. The key words are acupoints and infrared. For the first time, we withdrew some papers no relationship to key words by reading titles and abstracts. In the second, we only selected randomized clinical trials(RCT) published from 2000 to 2010. Results : Out of 62 papers, only 2 RCT were analyzed. One (RCT 1) was about depression patients with insomnia(jadad score: 1). The other(RCT 2) was about urimic pruritus patients(jadad score: 5). In RCT 1, experimental group was significantly better than control group. In RCT 2, there was not statistical signification between two groups. Conclusions : In reality, there were not many papers on infrared therapy applications. Further study just like RCTs may be needed to establish evidenced-based guideline on infrared.

  • This study was carried out to know the effect of Gwanjulbang-5(hereinafter refer to GJB-5) to on Rheumatoid Arthritis by using human fibroblast-like synoviocytes(hFLS). We performed several experimetal items : that is cytotoxicity of GJB-5, mRNA expression of pro-imflammatory cytokines in hFLS and production of NO, ROS. The results were obtained as follows : GJB-5 reduced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-1${\beta}$, IL-6, IL-8 in hFLS, increased the production of TIMP-1. As well as GJB-5 reduced the production of ICAM-1, MMP-3, NOS-II, the production of NO and ROS, and the proliferation of hFLS in proportion to the concentration of GJB-5. In conclusion, these results shows that GJB-5 had immunomodulatory effects in treating rheumatoid arthritis.

  • To investigate the toxic of herbs used in , the author analyzed herbs with toxic recorded in , , after searched toxic herbs literarily. Herbs with toxicity recorded in both and were total 17 species, and recorded in were total 13 species, and recorded in were total 12 species. The major cause that herbs generates a side effect in a human body is implicit use and abuse, inadequate processing the herbs, use of quack medicines of herbs and clinical use which is improper in symptoms and internal use, differences of constitution. The major toxic component in herbs is an alkaloid, essential oil and hydrargyrum (Hg), and the main invasion route of toxic herbs in human body is the liver, kidney, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract.

  • Objectives: The modified fasting therapy(MFT) of traditional korean medicine uses very low calorie diet on a patient with chronic disease and obesity. During the fasting period of MFT, calorie intake is restricted under 600kcal. Adverse events such as hunger, heartburn, headache, and hair loss can occur because of fasting. In case of Gilbert's syndrome, Jaundice can arise without disorder of liver function and hemolysis because of increase of unconjugated bilirubin. We experienced a case of Gilbert's syndrome patient who appeared jaundice during the fasting period, so we report about that with literature review.

  • Objectives : This study was undertaken to verify the effects of Wolbigachul-tang1(WBCEx1) on obesity using high fat diet-induced male mice and to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved. Methods : 8-week old C57BL/6 mice were divided into 5 groups; lean control, obese control, WBCEx1, 2, 3. After mice were treated with WBCEx1(water extract), 2(30% ethanol extract), 3(water extract; Ephedra sinica Stapf., Gypsum fibrosum) for 12 weeks, body weight gain, feeding efficiency ratio, plasma lipid and glucose metabolism, the messenger RNA(mRNA) expression of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor(PPAR)$\alpha$ target genes were measured. In addition, $PPAR{\alpha}$ target gene expression was examined in liver, white adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. Results : 1. WBCEx1-treated mice had significantly lower body weight gain and feeding efficiency ratio. 2. Consistent with the effects on body weight gain, WBCEx1 decreased the weights of epididymal and retroperitoneal white adipose tissue, inguinal subcutaneous adipose tissue, and brown adipose tissue. 3. WBCEx1 significantly decreased plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. 4. The size of adipocytes were significantly decreased by WBCEx1, whereas the adipocyte number per unit area was increased. Hepatic lipid accumulation was decreased by WBCEx1. 5. WBCEx1 did not affect the mRNA expression of $PPAR{\alpha}$ target genes in liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle. 6. Plasma asparate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), blood urea nitrogen(BUN) and creatine concentrations were in the physiological range. Liver and kidney weights were significantly lower following WBCEx treatment compared with obese controls, indicating that WBCEx does not show any toxic effects on liver and kidney. Conclusions : These results suggest that WBCEx1-induced body weight reduction is associated with appetite control and mediated by a mechanism other than the activation of $PPAR{\alpha}$.
