  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how much acupuncture treatment and autogenic training can affect to physical, mental relaxation through neurofeedback(Alpha/Theta training). I measured the numerical value of Alpha/H-Beta on the patient with facial tremor due to anxiety during acupuncture treatment and autogenic training, and when that patient wasn't relaxed I gave her feedback. The result shows that autogenic training is always more effective than aucupuncture in making the patient relaxed. On this case, the symptom was not much improved after having the treatments 10 times, but the frequency and intensity of the tremor decresed little. In according to the number of treatments, relaxtion didn't ascend regularly. I think it depends on the patient's condition or surroundings. I am unsatisfied I had only one case in this study and the number of treatments wasn't enough. In the future, much more clinical and statistical studies on herbal, musical, aroma therapies should be needed.

  • People with somatoform disorder have a number of different symptoms that typically last for several years. Their symptoms can't be traced to a specific physical cause. In people with somatoform disorder, medical test results are either normal or don't explain the person's symptoms. The symptoms of somatoform disorder are similar to the symptoms of other illnesses. People with this disorder may have several medical evaluations and tests to be sure that they don't have another illness. In this case, we described a 56-year old man who was diagnosed as R/O) ALS, because he has many similar symptoms of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) such as gait disturbance, dysarthria, dyspnea. But we diagnosed his case as somatoform disorder and treated with herbal medication, acupuncure treatment ,negative cupping and relaxation training. Through these treatment, the patient showed improvement of chief complains and accessory symptoms.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify predictors of clinical efficacy of oriental medical treatment for patients with panic disorder. Methods: We analyzed medical records of 41 patients who were diagnosed with panic disorder through DSM-IV or ICD-10 by 2 oriental medical neuro-psychiatrists. We performed frequency analysis of demographic characteristics in patients with panic disorder, and assessed the correlation between the psychological scales by Pearson correlation. Repeated measures ANOVA were used to compare the psychological scales during the treatment; and Single regression analysis was used to analyze the factors that have correlation to improvement of panic disorder by oriental medical treatment. Psychological scales used in the study were STAI-X-1/2, STAXI-S/T, BDI2, BAI, BSQ, PAS, ASI, LOT-R, SWLS, LSES and LSMS. Results: Patients' demographic characteristics indicated that there were twice more female than male patients; furthermore, there was a high ratio of patients in their 20s and 30s, with the highest percentage of onset-age in the 20s and average duration of panic disorder from 1~5 years. More than half of the total patient cohort comprised of those who had panic disorder with agoraphobia and major depressive disorder; in addition, major accompanied symptoms were dyspepsia, chest discomfort and headache. After treatment, most scores of psychological scales were significantly reduced, and correlation between the psychological scales was significant. Furthermore, we identified some factors that were significantly correlated to improvement of panic disorder by oriental medical treatment. Conclusions: In conclusion, treatment of panic disorder with oriental medicine was clinically efficient and improved the quality of life.

  • Objective: The antioxidant and anti-Alzheimer effects of Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS) water extract against the amyloid beta peptide (1-42) or H202-induced oxidative damage and cell death were investigated in rat pheochromocytoma line PC 12. Methods: The cells were incubated with SZS water extract and oxidative damage-inducing materials, amyloid beta peptide (1-42) or H2O2 for 24 h. The cellular viability was assessed by WST-1 assay, cytotoxic damage by LDH activity assay, oxidative damages of cells by fluorescence spectrophotometric method, and apoptosis by TUNEL staining assay. Results and Conclusions: 1. Preincubation of the cells with SZS water extract prior to amyloid beta peptide (1-42) (2 uM) or H2O2 (30 uM) exposure elevated the cell survival close to the control and decreased the level of LDH activity and the fluorescence from the cell homogenates and TUNEL staining of the cells, compared to only amyloid beta peptide (1-42) (2 uM) or H2O2 (30 uM) treated conditions. 2. Our study suggests that Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS) water extract has protective effects against amyloid beta peptide (1-42) or H2O2-induced cell toxicity through the antioxidation mechanism, which might be beneficial for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
