Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of oriental treatments and rehabilitation on a patient with organic mental disorder after head trauma caused by traffic accident. Methods: We treated the patient with acupuncture, herb-medication, oriental psychotherapy, and rehabilitation. MMSE-K, BDI, K-MBI, FIM were evaluated before and after treatment. Results: The results indicated that MMSE-K was maintained at 27 points; BDI was reduced from 16 points to 5 points; K-MBI was increased from 75 points to 99 points; and FIM was increased from 86 points to 115 points. Furthermore, the treatment resulted in reduced mental symptoms and improved work capacity. Conclusions: Oriental medical treatment has potential validity in improving symptoms of organic mental disorder.

Depressive Disorders are widespread and increasing recently. Somatic-symptom Group in Major Depressive Disorders are treated with current medical treatment but the results are not satisfactory. We tried to apply more effective and satisfactory oriental medical treatment. We treated 2 depression patients accompanying somatic-symptom treated with herbal medication and Meditation of the retaining needle. The Meditation of the retaining needle(鐵膜想), which combines Meditation and Acupuncture is a kind of medical meditation originating from Oriental Medicine. After our treatments, various somatic-symptoms were improved and Beck's depression Inventory(BDI) decreased from 28 and 27 to 14 and 12. This result suggests that meditation of the retaining needle(鐵膜想) is effective on somatic symptom and able to be developed as a useful way of oriental medical psychological care.

The brainstem include midbrain, pons & medulla. In acute stage of brainstem infarction, neurologic symptoms may be progressive. So we must pay special attention to Wallenberg's syndrome. In other words, Wallenberg's syndrome is dorsolateral medullary syndrome. A-54-years-old woman was admitted because of vertigo, ataxia & somatic sensory loss of left face and right half-body. Brain MRI showed high SI in T2W, low SI in T1W lesion left medullary infarction. We diagnosed the case as Shin-heo type Oriental medically and prescribed Gihwangemjakamibang. Diabetes mellitus was found out. So We have controlled diabetes mellitus by Occidental medical therapy. In the end, The symptoms of the patient became better. We know that cooperative(oriental & occidental) medical therapy is better than one medical therapy.Here we present one case of Wallenberg's syndrome who was admitted at Kunpo Wonkwang University Hospital Oriental Neuropsychiatry from 14th March to 6th April. 2001.

Objectives : Ginseng Radix Rubra water extract(RGE) has been used in vivo test for its beneficial effects on neuronal survival and neuroprotective functions, particularly in connection with APP-related dementias and Alzheimer's disease (AD). APP derived from proteolytic processing of the ${\beta}$-amyloid precursor protein (APP), including the amyloid-${\beta}$ peptide (A${\beta}$), plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's dementia. Methods : We determined that RGE inhibits formation of APP, which are the behavior, and possibly causative, feature of AD. Results and Conclusions : In the cells, RGE significantly activated antiapoptosis and decreased the activity of APP-grim, a key enzyme in the apoptosis cell-signaling cascade. These results suggest that neuronal damage in AD might be due to two factors: a direct APP toxicity and multiple cellular and molecular neuroprotective mechanisms, including attenuation of apoptosis and direct inhibition of APP, underlie the neuroprotective effects of RGE.

Objectives : The oriental medicine Jangwonhwan originally described in the Korean medical text, DonguiBogam(amnesia chapter). Recently, a modified formula of Jangwonhwan(LMK02-Jangwonhwan), was shown to reduce $\beta$-amyloid deposition in the brain of Tg-APPswe/PS1dE9 mouse model for Alzheimer's disease. This experiment aimed to investigate the acute oral toxicity of LMK02 in SD rats by up-and-down procedure determinations. Methods : Quality control of tablet form of LMK02 was established by estimating indicative components, Ginsenoside Rg3 of Red Ginseng and Decursin of Angelicagigas Nakai. The toxicity of LMK02 was investigated in 6 week old, specific pathogen free(SPF), Sprageu-Dawley rats. 3 female rats received 5,000 mg/10 ml/kg of test substance and their death rate, clinical sings, weight changes and autopsy findings had been observed for 2 weeks. Results : Any specific symptoms or death were resulted in this experiment. No significant changes in rats' weight. No significant differences in atopsy. Conclusions : The minimum lethal dose(MLD) of LMK02 for female Sprauge-Dawley rats were more than 5,000mg/kg in this experiment.

Y$\grave{u}$zh$\grave{e}$ng(鬱證) comes from obstruction of qi by stress. The patient has depressed mood, irritable sign, chest discomfort, costal pain, angry state or some strange feeling on the throat. Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy is base on the theory of interrelation in five elements in oriental medicine. The contents of Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy include five subjugations of five emotions. Anxiety subjugates fear(思勝恐), fear subjugates joy(恐勝喜), joy subjugates pity(喜勝悲), pity subjugates anger(悲勝怒), and anger subjugates anxiety(怒勝思). Forgiveness program is a kind of psychological therapies to decrease the degree of anger and it is included in Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy. In this case, a female patient, 50 years old, who suffered from Y$\grave{u}$zh$\grave{e}$ng(鬱證) with chest discomfort, irritable sign, easily angry state, depressed mood, hot flush, insomnia. We used Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy besides herbal medication, acupuncture to her condition got improved. Therefore we reported it for the treatment.

Objectives : This case series was conducted to report the efficacy of traditional Korean medicine treatments for Hwa-Byung. Methods : Patients were diagnosed with Hwa-byung through Hwa-Byung diagnostic interview schedule(HBDIS). instrument of pattern identification for Hwa-Byung was applied to develop an individualized traditional Korean medicine treatment plan. SCL-90-R, STAI, STAXI, BDI, and instrument of oriental medical evaluation for Hwa-Byung were measured. After 2 weeks of tradiational Korean medicine treatments and K-MBSR practice, STAI, STAXI, BDI, and instrument of oriental medical evaluation for Hwa-Byung were re-assessed to determine the progress of Hwa-Byung. Results : After treatments, chief complaints have improved. STAI, STAXI, BDI and instrument of oriental medical evaluation for Hwa-Byung score have decreased. Conclusions : According to the study, traditional Korean medicine treatments using instrument of pattern identification for Hwa-Byung have shown positive results in managing Hwa-Byung symptoms evaluated by instrument of oriental medical evaluation for Hwa-Byung.

This Study is attempted to analyze Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory responses to Vertigo patients and remedial value of Oriental medicine treatment. Methods: 24 Vertigo patients and 28 control group were tested by MMPI and QSCCII. It is analyzed by cluster analysis, one-way ANOVA, chi-square test, t-test, Duncan method is used as ex-post test. Results and Conclusions: 1. The MMPI scores of Vertigo patients were elevated in Hs, Hy clinical scales, 1-3 profile type, it is profile of conversional neurosis. In this case body condition where the psychological problem will get conversion is a notable feature. 2. All of the profiles can be classified three types of profile. Group 1(33.3%) showed 1-3-2 profile type and elevated Pt. scale, suggesting mainly depressive neurosis in the department of neuropsychiatry. Group 2 (37.5%) showed a normal profile. Group 3(29.2%) showed 1-3 profile type it is profile of conversional neurosis. With this result it is indicated that 62.5% Vertigo patients are related to emotional difficulties. 3. There was to a remedial value for the Vertigo patients, before treating from VAS score 10.00 after treating at VAS score 4.13. From this study, we know the possibility the Oriental medicine register remedial value for the Vertigo patients.

Objectives : This study was conducted to assess effects of oriental medicine music therapy on heart rate variability(HRV) in normal subjects under mental stress. Methods : 34 healthy volunteers(control group:17, experimental group:17) participate in this study. The volunteers were randomly allocated into two groups. After 10-minutes rest period and instrumentation, both groups performed a mental stress test for 12-minutes. HRV was recorded before and after the mental stress. And then the experimental group applied oriental medicine music therapy for 10-minutes. In the control group, they rested for 10-minutes. And HRV was recorded. Results : After giving mental stress stimulation to both groups, LF and LF/HF ratio were significantly increased and HF, mean HRV were decreased. In experimental group, LF, LF/HF ratio were significantly decreased and HF, SDNN were significantly increased after applying oriental medicine music therapy. In control group, LF was significantly decreased. And LF/HF ratio was decreased and HF, SDNN were increased, but it was not significant. Conclusions : This results show that oriental medicine music therapy could be relatively useful to decrease sympathetic activity and prevent the alteration of autonomic nervous system due to mental stress.

Objectives : Schizophreniform Disorder can be put as pre-stage of Schizophrenia, which is known as one of the most common mental disorder. Many studies have shown that Antipsychotic Treatment for Schizophrenia has many side effects such as EPS(Extrapyramidal Symptoms), and recently it has been found that even Non-Antipsychotic Treatment has side effects such as weight gain. This clinical study was aimed to search the therapeutic effects of Oriental medicine in Schizophreniform Disorder, and in reducing the side effects of Western medicine. Methods : We treated the patient diagnosed as Schizophreniform Disorder, whose chief complaint was auditory hallucination, with herbal medicine and acupuncture. Improvement in her clinical symptoms were recorded daily. We also used Emotional Freedom Techniques to control her anxiety effectively. Results : Auditory hallucination and extrapyramidal symptoms such as tremor disappeared. The patient's anxiety was controlled by Emotional Freedom Techniques effectively. Conclusions : From the above results, we conclude that Oriental medical treatment is effective in treating clinical symptoms of Schizophreniform Disorder, as well as in reducing the side effects of Western medicine.
