  • This research aims to analyze the ethical requirements and to find the problems for the publication guidelines of oriental medicine journals. A total of 13 domestic journals, related to oriental medicine and registered in 'National Research Foundation of Korea' list, were selected for the analysis of ethical requirements. We inquired the revised year of the publication guideline and the status of ethics committee of selected journals. The ethical requirements of publication guidelines were evaluated by categorizing them into Institutional Review Board(IRB), Helsinki Declaration, Informed Consent, confidentiality and anonymity of subjects, and conflict of interest. In the case of revised year of the publication guidelines, the year of the most recently revised journal was 2011. However, the revised year of publication guidelines were not announced for three journals and a few journals haven't revised the publication guidelines since 2002. In the case of ethics committee status, four journals out of 13 journals maintained the ethics committee. In the result of ethical requirement analysis, nine journals included the information for confidentiality and anonymity of subjects, and four journals included the information for Helsinki Declaration and Informed Consent. However, only one journal included the information for IRB and conflict of interest. Recently, the importance of clinical researches has been increased to prove the effect of oriental medicine scientifically and objectively. The clinical researches should be considered in scientific side and ethical side as well, because they have potential risks to human subjects. In this sense, announcing the ethical requirements in the publication guidelines can be one way to secure the morality of researches. Thus, it is required to prepare correct publication guidelines and ethical requirements in oriental medicine journals.

  • Pulse diagnosis is one of the typical examination methods in traditional oriental medicine. However, it is necessary to obtain the objectivity for the standardization of this diagnosis. For this purpose, the pulse analyzer has been devised and studied, and the tonometric pulse analyzer displaying the pulse wave and its variables was developed recently. In this study, we investigated the effect of the sexuality of the individuals on the differences of the pulse wave as well as the correlation between the weight and the pulse wave to interrogate whether the pulse difference is not caused by the difference of sex but the size of individual.

  • Background and Purpose : The purpose of this study was done to investigate what kinds of statistical techniques have been used to analyze data from oriental medicine research Methods : 135 original articles which used statistical techniques in their data analysis were selected from the articles published in The Journal of Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine(JKIOM) between 1995 to 2007. Results : Among 135 articles, 59 articles used descriptive statistics while 76 articles used inferential statistics for data analysis. For that 76 articles, two-sample t-test(33 articles), analysis of variance(29 articles), regression(9 articles), chi-square test(5 articles), nonparametic test(4 articles), Fisher's exact test(3 articles), and other test(9 articles) were chosen to analyze the data. SAS and SPSS statistical softwares(82.50%) were mostly used to analyze the data. Nonparametic tests were used to 4 articles(6.97%) of 67 articles and parametic tests were used to 63 articles(93.03%) of 67 articles. Among 29 articles used analysis of variance, duncan(8 articles), dunnet(4 articles), bonferroni(4 articles), turkey(3 articles), scheff(1 article) were used to do multiple comparison. 9 articles did not carry out the multiple comparison. Conclusions : It was found that the frequencies of statistical package used and statistical analysis used were not much by now. High level statistical analyses were not used most for oriental medicine research.

  • Noh Jungrye(盧重禮) can be cited as an representative royal doctor of early Chosun dynasty. He collaborated in the development of korean medicine out of the influence of chinese medicine. He made an systematical approach on supply and propagation of The Native Herb Medicine(鄕藥) which promoted the independence of Korean medicine. The edition of "HyangYakJibSungBang(鄕藥集成方)"(Compendium of Prescriptions from the Countryside) was the result of this effort establishing the originality of Korean medicine. He also strengthened in the medical support new born child editing "TaeSanYoRok(胎産要錄)" as their mortal rate was high in that time. • Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM) suggests the concept of health condition which is owned of different properties by each Sasang Constitution. But SCM theory has concentrate to explaining different symptoms that distinguish health condition, not much concerned with practical methods like face features, pulse diagnosis, skin surface properties and voice features. Physical properties of practical diagnosis methods from literature finding have been researched. As a result, complexion and face moisture were described to be physical properties related to health State. In scope of pulse diagnosis, depth, rate, contour, width and pressure are related. Skin surfaces' elasticity, moisture, fraction properties were also suggested as factors of health State of Sasang Constitution. We assume that this study would contribute further studies for objectifying and quantifying diagnosis methods to evaluate health state grades of Sasang Constitution.
