Korean EFL Students' Reader Responses on an Expository Text and a Narrative Text

  • This paper examines Korean EFL high school students' reader responses on an expository text and a narrative text with the same topic. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether they have different reading models depending on the two genres and whether there are any differences depending on the learners' proficiency levels. The analysis focuses on textual, critical, and aesthetic reading models in the reader responses written in English by science-gifted high school students (N=30). The results show that the participants have different reading models in reading an expository text and a narrative text. They tend to read the expository text in a more critical way while reading the narrative text in a more personal and emotional way. Moreover, regardless of the proficiency levels, they wrote longer responses on the narrative text than the expository text. However, the proficiency level of English does not support any significant differences in the types of reading models. The findings provide Korean EFL high school students' characteristics in L2 reading and suggest the pedagogical implication to pursue linguistic development as well as reading for pleasure.

  • 최근 투명 스크린을 이용한 인터랙티브 상품 전시 시스템은 다양하게 상용화되고 있다. 하지만 기존 시스템은 사용자와 실제 상품간의 인터랙션이 아닌 사용자와 투명 스크린 속 콘텐츠간의 인터랙션에 불과하다. 본 논문에서는 동작인식 기술 및 실시간 사용자 분석을 통한 선호상품 추천기술을 결합한 투명 스크린 기반 인터랙티브 상품 전시 시스템을 구현 및 실험하였다.

Pozzolanic reaction of the waste glass sludge incorporating precipitation additives

  • The waste glass sludge is a waste produced in the glass industry. It is in a dust form and disposed with water. In the disposal process, various cohesive agents are incorporated in order to precipitate the glass particles efficiently. In this paper, we investigate the pozzolanic reaction of the waste glass sludge incorporating precipitation additives experimentally. The consumption of calcium hydroxide, the setting time and the compressive strength and the pore structure were tested for two different types of the waste glass sludge depending on whether precipitation additives were used. It was found that the waste glass sludge incorporating the precipitation additives had a higher pozzolanic potential than the reference waste glass sludge without precipitation additives.

Optimized Adoption of NVM Storage by Considering Workload Characteristics

  • This paper presents an optimized adoption of NVM for the storage system of heterogeneous applications. Our analysis shows that a bulk of I/O does not happen on a single storage partition, but it is varied significantly for different application categories. In particular, journaling I/O accounts for a dominant portion of total I/O in DB applications like OLTP, whereas swap I/O accounts for a large portion of I/O in graph visualization applications, and file I/O accounts for a large portion in web browsers and multimedia players. Based on these observations, we argue that maximizing the performance gain with NVM is not obtained by fixing it as a specific storage partition but varied widely for different applications. Specifically, for graph visualization, DB, and multimedia player applications, using NVM as a swap, a journal, and a file system partitions, respectively, performs well. Our optimized adoption of NVM improves the storage performance by 10-61%.

  • To apply induction hardening method to a press die having 3-D free surface, the induction hardening tool moves on a press die above 1~2mm gap with constant velocity. Since the induction hardening process requires its own hardening path for each die, a direct teaching method which generates working path directly guided by operators is more suitable than an offline method using CAD/CAM data.   • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) vary in their carcinogenic potencies. The more potent PAHs carcinogens are 3-methylcholantheren and 7, 12- dimethyl benzo(a)anthracene, while dibenzo(a, c)anthracene has very little carcinogenic activity.   • The reactive ion etching (RIE) technology which enables nano-texturatization of surface is applied on monocrystalline silicon solar cell. The additional RIE process on alkalized textured surface further improves the blue response and short circuit current. Such parameter is characterized by surface reflectance and quantum efficiency measurement. By varying the RIE process time and matching the subsequent processes, the absolute efficiency gain of 0.13% is achieved. However, the result indicates potential efficiency gain could be higher due to process integration. The critical etch process time is discussed which minimizes both front surface reflectance and etching damage, considering the challenges of required system throughput in industry.

Efficient Extraction of Bioethanol from Freshwater Cyanobacteria Using Supercritical Fluid Pretreatment

  • For the production of ethanol from freshwater cyanobacteria, a new pretreatment method using supercritical fluid was introduced. In this study, it was found that the supercritical fluid could penetrate inside the cell wall and help to liberate starch from cyanobacterial cells which resulted in the increase of the efficiency of ethanol production. For Microcystis aeruginosa, supercritical fluid pretreatment increased the amount of ethanol produced from cyanobacteria from 1.53 g/L to 2.66 g/L. For Anabaena variabilis, the amount of ethanol was increased from 1.25 g/L to 2.28 g/L. With use of supercritical fluid pretreatment, the efficiency of the process to obtain higher ethanol yields from freshwater cyanobacteria was improved upto 80%. The optimum temperature and pressure conditions for supercritical fluid pretreatment were determined as the temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ and the pressure of 120 atm. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using supercritical fluid pretreatment for ethanol production using freshwater cyanobacteria.

Effect of the Introduction of High-speed Trains on Consumer Welfare

  • This paper examines the impact of introducing high-speed trains on consumer welfare, taking the ensuing changes in train schedules into account. Based on the estimated demand model for travel which incorporates consumer's heterogeneous preferences for travel schedules into the standard discrete-choice model, I separately evaluate the impact from adding high-speed trains and that from changes in train schedules. The results indicate that consumers who travel between two cities connected by high-speed trains benefit from the introduction of high-speed trains, while some travelers whose choice set does not include high-speed trains face a reduced frequency of non-high-speed trains, resulting in significant losses.
