The lateral-torsional buckling strengths of the parabolic arches are investigated in this study. The curvatures of a parabolic arch vary along the center line of the arch. Thus, the problem is much more complicated comparing that of arches with constant curvature such as circular arches. Moreover, most of previous studies are limited to the circular arches. In this study, lateral-torsional buckling equations are derived for the arches with varying curvatures considering the warping effects. To obtain the buckling strength of parabolic arches, numerical solutions based on the finite difference technique are provided. The numerical solutions are compared with the those of previous researchers and finite element analyses. Then, the lateral-torsional strengths of parabolic arches are successfully verified. Finally, comparison study of critical buckling loads of parabolic arches with those of circular arches for the various rise to span ratios are discussed.
In this paper, Gilt-bronze Standing Avaolkiteshvara (National Treasure No. 293, M355) excavated at Gyuam-ri in Buyeo was observed with a microscope to identify the production technique applied to it. It was also analyzed with XRF and hard X-ray to identify the composition and the surface treatment techniques and casting method applied. In this statue, Avalokiteshvara is standing upright on a lotus pedestal. The lotus designs on the pedestal and those on the shawl flowing down on both sides of the statue are characteristic of Buddhist statues from the seventh century or later. The use of supports to affix the outer and inner molds and traces of injected cast were observed in the interior of the pedestal. The blisters on the arms and pedestal created during the bronze casting indicate the use of lost-wax casting, which was popularly employed for the production of mid- or small-sized gilt-bronze Buddhist statues in ancient times. The composition analysis identified a copper-tin-lead ternary alloy in the interior of the statue that was conventional used in the sixth and seventh centuries. It is likely that this simple alloy was used to facilitate casting and produce clearer expressions of designs and ornaments on the statue. Mercury (Hg) was detected on the surface of the statue, indicating the use of amalgam-plating with gold (Au) dissolved in mercury. This plating method is a common surface treatment technique used for small gilt-bronze statutes in ancient Korea.

In this study, calcium alginate based cation exchange membrane was prepared and used to develop membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) system for effective hardness control. As a major result, the MCDI with Ca-alginate membrane showed 27% better deionization capacity than the MCDI with a commercial cation exchange membrane. This superior improvement in the deionization capacity was expected to be due to the high ratio of transport number/electrical resistance (Sc/Rratio) of Ca-alginate membrane. In addition, the MCDI with Ca-alginate membrane showed better deionization performance than the MCDI with Ca-alginate coating. This was because the space between the electrode and the Ca-alginate membrane was utilized for ion adsorption. The preliminary results indicated that the MCDI with Ca-alginate membrane can be a viable technique for the hardness control.
A diffraction grating structure composed of two matching layers and two grating layers was formed, and a diffraction grating with high transmission diffraction efficiency in the -1st order was designed through an optimization technique. The designed diffraction grating had a transverse electric wave diffraction efficiency of 99.997% at the design center wavelength, and had a wavelength width of 80 nm and an incident angle width of 20.0° that maintained a diffraction efficiency of 95% or more. By performing the grating tolerance analysis, it was confirmed that the thickness tolerance for a diffraction efficiency of 95% or more was secured to at least 60 nm, and the diffraction efficiency could be maintained even in a trapezoidal shape with an internal angle of less than 10°.
To analyze the slope characteristics of solar power plant installation region in Gangwon province, the installation status of solar power plant in Gangneung and Wonju city were investigated using GIS technique and satellite map. The solar power plant installation of Gangneung and Wonju city is 36 and 48 regions. Through topographical data of solar power plant installation region, a database for area, slope inclination, and elevation was construced. Based on the database, the slope characteristics of solar power plant installation region in Gangneung and Wonju city was analyzed. The results showed that the slope of Wonju city has a relatively higher slope inclination than Gangneung city. In addition, Gangneng and Wonju cities have many regions with maximum inclination of 15° and 34° or more within the solar power plant.

Harmony search (HS) is a recently developed metaheuristic optimization algorithm. HS is inspired by the process of musical improvisation and repeatedly searches for the optimal solution using three operations: random selection, memory recall (or harmony memory consideration), and pitch adjustment. HS has been applied by many researchers in various fields. The increasing complexity of real-world optimization problems has created enormous challenges for the current technique, and improved techniques of optimization algorithms and HS are required. We propose an improved clustering harmony search (ICHS) that uses a clustering technique to group solutions in harmony memory based on their objective function values. The proposed ICHS performs modified harmony memory consideration in which decision variables of solutions in a high-ranked cluster have higher probability of being selected than those in a low-ranked cluster. The ICHS is demonstrated in various optimization problems, including mathematical benchmark functions and water distribution system pipe design problems. The results show that the proposed ICHS outperforms other improved versions of HS.

The computational efficiency of reverse time migration (RTM) based on numerical modeling is not secured due to the high-frequency band of several hundred Hz or higher for data acquired through a three-dimensional (3D) ultra-high-resolution (UHR) seismic survey. Therefore, this study develops an RTM program to derive high-quality 3D geological structures using UHR seismic data. In the traditional 3D RTM program, an excitation amplitude technique that stores only the maximum amplitude of the source wavefield and a domain-limiting technique that minimizes the modeling area where the source and receivers are located were used to significantly reduce memory usage and calculation time. The program developed through this study successfully derived a 3D migration image with a horizontal grid size of 1 m for the 3D UHR seismic survey data obtained from the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources in 2019, and geological analysis was conducted.
Clay figure of Baekje, produced by forming and molding various shapes using clay, are mainly excavated from temple sites and provide essential information for studying the Buddhist art of Baekje. Research on clay figures of Baekje primarily focuses on the characteristics of Baekje-era temples in which such figures are excavated, as well as the role and production techniques of clay figures, by comparing regional and morphological characteristics. In particular, research on the manufacturing method of clay figures is mainly carried out by visual observation, whereas precise scientific analysis is required to understand production techniques and characteristics of raw materials in greater detail. In this study, to confirm such production techniques and material characteristics, computed tomography (CT) scans were conducted on the Clay Bodhisattva excavated from the Neungsan-ri Temple site in Buyeo. As a result, it was found that the Clay Bodhisattva was made using a cylindrical core of fine clay, tied together with several thin branches or reeds with straws. The clay used in the figure bore traces indicating the presence of herbaceous plants, which increase adhesion between clay and prevent cracks in the contraction process. On the other hand, the density of the fine clay differs on the inside and outside of the clay figure. Based on this, it is presumed that the clay was applied around the cylindrical core to shape the Clay Bodhisattva. The clay was reapplied on top of the figure to express the detailed shape and pattern.
The modern radiotherapy technique which delivers a large amount of dose to patients asks to confirm the positions of patients or tumors more accurately by using X-ray projection images of high-definition. However, a rapid increase in patient's exposure and image information for CT image acquisition may be additional burden on the patient. In this study, by introducing structural similarity (SSIM) index that can effectively extract the structural information of the image, we analyze the differences between daily acquired x-ray images of a patient to verify the accuracy of patient positioning. First, for simulating a moving target, the spherical computational phantoms changing the sizes and positions were created to acquire projected images. Differences between the images were automatically detected and analyzed by extracting their SSIM values. In addition, as a clinical test, differences between daily acquired x-ray images of a patient for 12 days were detected in the same way. As a result, we confirmed that the SSIM index was changed in the range of 0.85~1 (0.006~1 when a region of interest (ROI) was applied) as the sizes or positions of the phantom changed. The SSIM was more sensitive to the change of the phantom when the ROI was limited to the phantom itself. In the clinical test, the daily change of patient positions was 0.799~0.853 in SSIM values, those well described differences among images. Therefore, we expect that SSIM index can provide an objective and quantitative technique to verify the patient position using simple x-ray images, instead of time and cost intensive three-dimensional x-ray images.

Assessment for operator's dermal and inhalation exposure to acetamiprid during cultivation of water melon in greenhouse was carried out. For dermal exposure measurement, whole body dosimetry (WBD) was performed as the first trial in Korea. WBD consists of cotton/polyester outer clothes and cotton inner clothes. Hand exposure was measured by washing of nitrile gloves and hands while head exposure was monitored by face/neck wipe technique. Inhalation exposure was monitored with personal air sampling pumps and IOM sampler (glass fiber filter). Analytical limit of quantitation was 2.5 ng/mL. Good reproducibility (C.V < 8.7%), linearity ($R^2$ > 0.99) and recovery (70~119%) were obtained. Field recovery of acetamiprid was 77~95%. During mixing/loading, hand exposure of acetamiprid was about 10 times ($229.7{\mu}g$) more than that of application case ($20.9{\mu}g$). During application, total dermal exposure was $1207.4{\mu}g$. Exposure of lower legs was $1132.1{\mu}g$, which is 93.8% of the total dermal exposure. Inhalation exposure during mixing/loading and application was not detected. Margin of safety (MOS) was calculated for risk assessment using male Korean average body weight (70 kg) and acceptable operator exposure level ($124{\mu}g/kg/day$) to give 140, suggesting that health risk of operator during treatment of acetamiprid for water melon in greenhouse could be safe.
