  • Recently, we reported that Jeju ground water contains vanadium components and exerts antioxidant effects in vitro and in vivo via the scavenging of reactive oxygen species and enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activities. In the present study, the antioxidant actions of Jeju ground water were compared with those of tap water against gamma-ray radiation in mice. C57BL/6 mice were irradiated with gamma-ray at a dose rate of 2 Gy. The mice were then given tap water or Jeju ground water for 90 days. Jeju ground water compared with tap water enhanced the activities and levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in irradiated liver tissues. Jeju ground water also enhanced the levels of intracellular reduced glutathione, which is vital for normal liver function and repair. These results suggest that vanadium-containing Jeju ground water can safeguard against the harmful actions of gamma-ray radiation through the support of hepatic antioxidant processes.

  • This study analyzed fluctuations of ground water level of ground water wells developed in Seongsan watershed of Jeju Island until 2013 using MODFLOW, a numerical analysis model. Ground water level shows greater fluctuations from increase of pump capacity compared to the number of ground water wells. The development of ground water at the top of watershed was found to have direct influence on ground water level. Ground water wells developed until 2013 were used to continue pumping for 50 days, and ground water level of coastal region was reduced below 50% compared to the standard water level. In addition, the range of fluctuation of water level was large in the east coast region, which represents the direction of flow of ground water.

  • The present study examined the effects of consumption of Jeju ground water containing vanadium components on oxidative stress in obese (ob/ob) mice. Intake of Jeju ground water decreased the generation of oxidative stress induced-lipid peroxidation in the liver of ob/ob mice It also enhanced the enzymatic antioxidant defense system by increasing the protein expression and activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in liver tissues. Jeju ground water intake also upregulated the intracellular content of reduced glutathione. The induction of antioxidant enzyme expression by consumption of Jeju ground water was mediated by the erythroid transcription factor NF-E2 (Nrf2). Increased nuclear expression of phospho Nrf2 was observed in ob/ob mouse liver cells following ntake of Jeju ground water. These results suggest that consumption of Jeju ground water stimulated the antioxidant defense system in the livers of ob/ob mice via induction of Nrf2.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the economic benefit of improving ground water quality in Jeju Island, where groundwater pollution has recently become a social issue and various water quality improvement projects are being promoted. By applying the contingent valuation method, an online survey was conducted on Jeju Island residents to analyze the response data of 542 respondents and estimate the mean willingness to pay using 16 models. The estimation of the double-bounded dichotomous choice model confirmed that each household was willing to pay 28,008 won per year, with the willingness to pay estimated at a minimum of 17,762 won and a maximum of 37,416 won based on different models. The total annual benefit for Jeju Island's ground water quality improvement was estimated to be about 8.66 billion won , and socioeconomic factors influencing willingness-to-pay were investigated. This study is expected to serve as a foundation for the development of environmental improvement policies by assisting in the understanding of Jeju Island's unique water resource environment.

  • This study is aimed to construct a marine small hydro power plant using discharge water of fish farm in Jeju Haengwon-ri. The difference of design methods between marine small hydro power plant and land small hydro power plant is to consider the tides. Moreover, ground condition should be examined because gushout sea water comes out from the ground at high tide in Jeju as the ground of Jeju beach consists of basalt stone. From the field test of the turbine generator after construction of the power plant, output power and efficiency of the turbine generator shows good conformance to the required conditions.

  • The environmental tracers tritium/helium-3 (3H/3He) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were investigated in ground water from Jeju Island, Korea, a basaltic volcanic island. The apparent 3H/3He and CFC-12 ages were in relatively good agreement in samples with low concentrations of terrigenic He. Ground water mixing was evaluated by comparing 3H and CFC-12 concentrations with mixing models, which distinguished old water with negligible 3H and CFC-12, young water with piston flow, and binary mixtures of the two end members. The ground water CFC-12 age is much older in water from wells completed in confined zones of the hydro-volcanic Seoguipo formation in coastal areas than in water from the basaltic aquifer. Comparison of major element concentrations in ground water with the CFC-12 age shows that nitrate contamination processes contribute more solutes in young water than are derived from water-rock interactions in non-contaminated old water. Chemical evolution of ground water resulting from silicate weathering in basaltic rocks reaches the zeolite-smectite phase boundary. The calcite saturation state of ground water increased with the CFC-12 apparent (piston flow) age. In agricultural areas, the temporal trend of nitrate concentration in ground water was consistent with the known history of chemical fertilizer use on Jeju Island, but the response of nitrate concentration in ground water to nitrogen inputs follows an approximate 10-year delay. Based on mass balance calculations, it was estimated that about 40% of the nitrogen applied by fertilizers reached the water table and contaminated ground water resources when the fertilizer use was at the highest level.

  • This study summarizes test methods and evaluation methods for examining the thermal characteristics of Jeju-type ground heat exchangers (GHXs) installed on Jeju Island, and analyzes the ground temperature and thermal characteristics of ground heat exchangers installed in various regions by using thermal response tests (TRT). Jeju Island is composed of volcanic rock layers, and the groundwater flow is well developed. A Jeju-type GHX can be installed up to 30 m from groundwater level after drilling a borehole. The ground heat exchanger has a structure in which several pipes are inserted into the borehole. In order to examine the characteristics of the Jeju-type GHX, tests were conducted on ground heat exchangers installed in four places on Jeju Island (Pyoseon, Jeju, Namwon, and Hallym). As a result of the analysis of the Jeju-type ground heat exchanger, the ground circulating water temperature stabilized according to the heat injection, depending on the installed location, and was formed within one to three hours. The ground heat exchanger capacity in Hallym was highest at 73.4 kW (cooling) and 82.8 kW (heating), and the Jeju-type calculation was lowest at 34.1 kW (cooling) and 23.3 kW (heating).

  • This paper is written to evaluate the ground stability according to the construction of Jeju 2nd airport. Sumgol is the unique characteristics of Jeju soil, which is used to evaluate the ground stability of the airport. The research contents are as follows. 1) The geotechnical characteristics for Jeju 2nd airport was analyzed, and the Sumgol and geotechnical properties were calculated based on the existing geotechnical survey data. 2) The divided sections of Jeju 2nd airport were modeled to evaluate the ground stability after determining the section (runway and airport facilities) which have the different soil and loading properties. 3) The stability and deformation ranges of the airport ground were identified through numerical analysis. The entire airport was divided into three sections to analyze the stability of Jeju 2nd airport, and calculated the stresses, settlements, and strains of each section by computer numerical analysis modeling. For modeling, the ground and load conditions were examined, also pavement conditions for each airport ground section were examined. From the analysis results of each section according to the ground conditions, the vertical settlements were analyzed as 0.11~0.18 m and the sum of effective stress and pore water pressure were 92.75~445 kPa. These results were made by taking into account the Sumgol of the bottom ground without reinforcement, also the soil strength parameters of the airport ground were reduced for computer modeling, Therefore, if proper reinforcements are applied to the ground of Jeju 2nd airport, sufficient airport ground stability can be secured.
