  • Marado is a small rocky island located off the south coast of Jeju Island and acts as the first gateway of the Kuroshio Current to Korean coastal ecosystems. This island is one of the most unpolluted and well preserved sea areas around the Jeju coast. We extensively observed macroalgal assemblages of species and functional forms in the intertidal and subtidal zones through four seasons on Marado, Jeju Island, Korea to demonstrate the seasonality of vertical distribution patterns and biomass. A total of 144 species (14 Chlorophyta, 40 Phaeophyta, and 90 Rhodophyta) were identified in quadrats and were analyzed seasonally and vertically to define the variation patterns. The annual mean biomass of macroalgae was $2,932.3g\;wet\;wt\;m^{-2}$ and the highest value was recorded in spring and the lowest was in winter. The annual dominant species by biomass was Ecklonia cava followed by Sargassum fusiforme, S. macrocarpum, Amphiroa galapagensis, Chondria crassicaulis, and S. thunbergii. Obvious biomass zonation patterns of macroalgal species were detected in relation to tidal height and depth. Macroalgal biomass, diversity index (H'), and community dynamics were the highest in the shallow subtidal zone. Species number was higher in the subtidal than in the intertidal zone and similar throughout the entire subtidal zone. Our results provide revealing insights into the distribution patterns of macroalgal assemblages in an unpolluted sea area around Jeju Island.

  • Two infectious species of Streptococcosis pathogens were detected by multiplex PCR assay. Detection rates of Streptococcus iniae and S. parauberis could reach 44.9% and 55.1% respectively for one year during 2004 to 2005 in Jeju island. These findings showed that S. parauberis strains were important pathogen with streptococcosis of olive flounder in Jeju island. These findings showed that S. parauberis strains were important pathogen with streptococcosis of olive flounder in Jeiu island. In the present study we have investigated the interspecific relationship of all Jeju area of S. parauberis by RAPD analysis. Represent strains divided to four groups by RAPD fingerprints. The important differences observed between the olive flounder isolates suggest that they could constitute a well-differentiated group or a separate clonal line within this bacterial species. Though, serological research of S. parauberis strains in Jeju island not exist yet. These strains doing the serological evolution.

  • A guest room section is the most important part of the hotel design. It contributes not only to the marketing but also to the effective distribution of the floor plan. This study is to provide the trends of the plan type of the guest rooms at the luxury resort hotels in Jeju-do through analyzing the typical floor plan type and surveying the area distribution of the guest room section. The purpose of the study is to provide the basic materials for the improvement of the quality of hotel guest rooms in Jeju-do, which is emerging as the international tourism destination of 21C. Here, we make the 13 luxury resort hotels in Jeju-do an subject of the study. They are divided into three grades by the size, quality, and the service.

  • A storm-induced coastal inundation model (SICIM) is presented to simulate the flood event during typhoon passage that often results in significant rise in sea-level heights especially in the upstream region of the basin. The SICIM is a GIS-based distributed hydrodynamic model, both storm surge and storm water inundations are taken into account. The spatial and temporal distribution of the storm water level and flux are calculated. The model was applied to Jeju Island since it has an isolated watershed that is easy to handle as a first step of model application. Another reason is that it is surrounded by coastal area exposed to storm surge inundation. The model is still advancing and will be the framework of a predictive early inundation warning system.

  • The purpose of this study is to recognize the living space and life pattern transition which is expressed in the modernization course with the analysis of the Jeju rural houses. For this study, I choose 72 residences examples in 8 villages as the subjects which are changed by the spontaneous purpose of the inhabitants who live in Jeju area were chosen as the subjects. As for the research method, after visiting the subject residence directly, and the field study such as the actual estimation, observation and interview were performed. The conclusion of the study with these purpose are as follows. First, The opened spatial composition of the sitting-inclination is composed of the form which has the individual opened room and living room with the mechanism to grant the flexibility to the limited space and the structure for enduring the much-humid oceanic climate. Second, The life pattern shows the sitting life which usually uses the an-bang and living room with the seasonal change.

  • To study the effects of solar energy in a greenhouse, outdoor air temperature and wind speed on inside air temperature, a simulation model for forecasting the greenhouse air temperature was conducted on the basis of the energy and mass balance theory. Application of solar energy to the greenhouse is major area in the renewable energy research and development in order to save energy. Recently, considering the safety and efficiency of the heating of greenhouse, clean energy such as geothermal and solar energy has received much attention. The analysed greenhouse has $50m^2$ of ground area which located in jocheon-ri of Jeju Province. Experiments were carried out to collect data to validate the model. The results showed that the simulated air temperature inside a plastic greenhouse agreed well with the measured data.

  • In this study, the material cycle model was applied to suggest alternative management of water quality for Jeju Harbor. The distribution of COD, DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) and DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) concentrations was reasonably reproduced by simulations on the model area of the Jeju Harbor using a material cycle model. The simulations of COD, DIN and DIP concentrations were performed under the conditions of 20∼100% pollution loadings reductions from pollution sources. In case of the 100% reduction of the input loads from Sanzi river, concentrations of COD, DM and DIP were reduced to 39%, 78% and 52%, respectively at Jeju harbor. In contrast, in case of the pollutant loadings reductions from sediment, the effect of DIN and DIP reduction relatively seemed to increase around the center of study area. The 95% reduction of the pollutant loadings from river and sediment is required to meet the COD and nutrients concentration of second grade of ocean water quality criteria.

  • Fe compounds in scoria as distributed in the south-western area of Jeju Island were investigated using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and $^{57}Fe$ $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The samples were prepared from four parasite volcanoes. It was found that these samples are typical basalt comprised of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, Fe, and silicate minerals. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra showed doublets for olivine, pyroxene, and ilmenite as well as sextets for hematite and magnetite. The valence state of Fe is chiefly a 3+ charge state with a slight 2+ charge state. It is expected that these results will add to the body of information related to the formation mechanisms of Jeju Island.

  • Groundwater is essential source of the freshwater. Groundwater is stored in the body of the rocks or sediments, called aquifer. Finding an aquifer is a very important part of the geophysical survey. The best method to find the aquifer is to make a borehole. Single borehole is not a suitable method if the aquifer is not located in the borehole drilled area. To overcome this problem, a cross borehole method is used. Using a cross borehole method, we can estimate aquifer location more precisely. Electrical impedance tomography is use to estimate the aquifer location inside the subsurface using the cross borehole method. Electrodes are placed inside each boreholes and area between these boreholes are analysed. An aquifer is a non-uniform structure with complex shape which can represented by the truncated Fourier series. Deep neural network is evaluated as an inverse problem solver for estimating the aquifer boundary coefficients.
