Presence of an Inducible Semicarbazide-Sensitive Amine Oxidase in Mycobacterium sp. Strain JC1 DSM 3803 Grown on Benzylamine

  • Mycobacterium sp. strain JC1 was capable of growth on benzylamine as a sole source of carbon and energy. The primary deamination of benzylamine was mediated by an inducible amine oxidase, which can also oxidize tyramine, histamine, and dopamine. Inhibitor study identified this enzyme as a copper-containing amine oxidase sensitive to semicarbazide.

  • A lactic acid bacterium was isolated from kimchi. The isolated strain was identified as the genus Lactobacillus through its morphological, cultural, and physiological characteristics and named as Lactobacillus sp. JC-7. The optimum conditions for the electrofusion between streptomycin (2.5 mg/ml) resistant mutant of Lactobacillus acidophilus 88 and kanamycin (600 $\mu$g/ml) resistant mutant of Lactobacillus sp. JC-7 were evaluated. The highest number of fusants were obtained at a capacitance value of 120 msec (1670 $\mu$F), a field strength of 100 V/cm, and a pulse controller setting of 72$\Omega$. The optimum pH of electroporation buffer was 7.5 and the concentration of divalent cation was 1 mM Mg$^{2+}. Electrofusants were efficiently obtained by addition 20% polyethylene glycol to elec- troporation buffer. The yield of fusion was better than that of using polyethylene glycol mediated chemical induction.

  • In order to develop natural anticariogenic agents, we investigated inhibitory effects of Areca catechu L. extracts on the acid production of Streptococcus mutans JC-2 and its cytotoxicity on NIH 3T3 fibroblasts were also examined. The results are as follows : 1. Major organic acid produced by Streptococcus mutans JC-2 were lactic acid and acetic acid, and their productions were decreased by additions of Areca catechu L. extracts. 2. Areca catechu L. extracts were showed noncytotoxicity on NIH 3T3 fibroblasts.

The effect of cryogenic rolling on critical current density of Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes (Bi-2223/Ag 고온초전도선재의 Jc와 미세조직에 미는 저온압연의 영향)

  • In order to investigate the effect of cryogenic rolling on the critical current density (Jc), 54 and 55-multi-filament Bi-2223/hg tapes have been fabricated using a PIT process including two different types of cooling methods. The densification of oxide filament was found to occur due to the cryogenic rolling, and this enhanced the critical current density. However, when the wire was fully immersed in liquid nitrogen used as the coolant in cryogenic rolling, Jc degradation appeared caused by the nitrogen penetration into the filament. The cryogenically rolled tape with an improved type of cooling showed approximately 10% Jc's increase.

  • The standard map for polyerystalline $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$-X was construeted and indexed from pressed tape sintered bulk and compressed bulk samples were drawn by the [001-110-110] stereographie quadrant map and by the ECPs from individual grains of the speeimens. The relationship between the (001) texture development and critical current density (Jc) for various samples was discussed. An (001) orintation was preferred in the pressed tape thickness was decreased. and in the compressed bulk as the compression strain was increaesed.The (001) orientation made a signifieant in crease on Jc. We conclded that an ECP technique was very useful for the analysis of the orientation distribution in small-sized $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$-X specimens such as superonducting tapes or thin films.

Let A and B be unital $C^*-algebra$ or Lie $JC^*-algebra$. As an application, we show that every almost homomorphism h : $A{\rightarrow}B$ of A into B is a homomorphism when $h(2^d{\mu}y) = h(2^d{\mu})h(y)\;or\;h(2^d{\mu}\;o\;y)=h(2^d{\mu})\;o\;h(y)$ for all unitaries ${\mu}{\in}A,\;all\;y{\in}A$, and d = 0,1,2,..., and that every almost linear almost multiplicative mapping $h:\;A{\rightarrow}B$ is a homomorphism when h(2x)=2h(x) for all $x{\in}A$.   • The grain morphology, the changes in morphology and Jc with the thermo-mechanical treatment (TMT) history, the field dependence of Jc and the nature of intergranular bonding were studied in $T_{10.8}$$Pb_{.2}$$Bi_{0.2}$$Sr_{1.8}$$Ba_{0.2}$$Ca_{2.2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{z}$/Ag tapes. As a result, incorporation of intermediate rolling during the final heat-treatment resulted in of plate-like TI-1223 grains, and thus enhanced Jc. Jc's near 2.5$\times$104 A/cm2 at 77 K and 0 T were obtained in just rolled tapes with an excellent reproducibility. The high Jc's seem to grain-connectivity easy recovery of excellent grain-connectivity during final heat-treatment after inter -mediate rolling, probably due to retarded T1 evaporation and excessive Ca content in the present composition. The strong field dependence of Jc even in low fields, however, indicated that there still existed significant weak-links and the degree of directional grain-alignment was far from the desired one. The intergranular binding in the tapes seemed to be mainly dominated by SIS junctions.

A Study on the Optimal Location Estimation of Highway Shelter Considering the Driving Duration of Individual Vehicles (개별차량의 운전지속시간을 고려한 고속도로 휴게시설의 적정위치 선정방법 연구)

  • In this study, we calculated the driving duration of individual vehicles according to the availability of rest facility on highway, and suggested indicators indicating the potential risk of accidents caused by long-term driving with weights based on the number of vehicles by driving duration of individual links. Based on this, the methodology for estimating the appropriate location of the highway rest facility considering the driving duration of individual vehicles was presented. Using the DSRC individual vehicle data collected from the highways, the appropriate location of the rest facility was calculated by considering the driving duration by classifying weekdays and weekends for the Gyeongbu Expressway. The results showed that the weekly and weekend high risk indicators were different. In the case of weekdays, the risk indicators of Gimchun JC to Kumho JC for Busan were high, while for weekends, the risk indicators of Ansung JC to Dongtan JC for Seoul and Ansung IC to Bukchunan IC for Busan were high. This study has great significance in that it provides a framework for detailed analysis of link units by using non-aggregated data of individual vehicle units. In addition, it is significant that the reasonable driving duration reflecting the behavior of individual vehicles was calculated by analyzing the use of rest facilities.

Analysis of Merging Behaviors and Traffic Characteristics on Freeway Merging Areas According to Acceleration Lane Length (가속차로 길이에 따른 합류행태 및 합류부 교통특성 분석)

  • This paper analyzes the effects of acceleration lane lengths on the traffic characteristics of merging areas. Two merging areas, Suwon IC and Singal JC, which have remarkably different acceleration lane length were selected as field study sites. Traffic data were collected through dividing each merging area into several subsections. Not only conventional flow, speed and density data but also a newly introduced MOE, density variation were used to analyzed the characteristics of merging area. Singal JC which has longer acceleration lane than Suwon IC showed more severe congestion, and the cause of the results was figured out.

Salt Processed Food and Gastric Cancer in a Chinese Population

  • To investigate the association between salt processed food and gastric cancer, a hospital based case-control study was conducted in a high risk area of China. One hundred and seven newly diagnosed cases with histological confirmation of gastric cancer and 209 controls were recruited. Information on dietary intake was collected with a validated food frequency questionnaire. Unconditional logistic regression was applied to estimate the odds ratios with adjustment for other potential confounders. Comparing the high intake group with never consumption of salt processed foods, salted meat, pickled vegetables and preserved vegetables were significantly associated with increased risk of gastric cancer. Meanwhile, salt taste preference in diet showed a dose-response relationship with gastric cancer. Our results suggest that consumption of salted meat, pickled and preserved vegetables, are positively associated with gastric cancer. Reduction of salt and salt processed food in diets might be one practical measure to preventing gastric cancer.
