  • To study the cause of physiological disorder in leaf of ginseng cultivated at paddy soil, the degree of brown-colored symptom (BCS) and the contents of inorganic matter in leaf were investigated by irrigating the solution of ferric and ferrous iron of 0.1 ~ 2.0%, and citric acid of 1.0 ~ 4.0% on bed soil, respectively. Ratio of BCS by variety was as high as 85.0% in Yoenpoong, while it was as low as 5.4%, 7.5% in Chunpoong and Hwangsook, respectively. The contents of inorganic matter of leaf in Yoenpoong were lower in $P_2O_5$, Ca, and Mg, while it were higher in K, Fe, and Mn than other variety. Iron solution caused BCS more distinctly when each ferric and ferrous iron were dissolved with 1.0% citric acid than when each iron was dissolved without citric acid. Ferric iron caused BCS more effectively than ferrous iron. BCS occurred in 4.0% citric acid was as same as 2.0% ferric iron mixed with 1.0% citric acid. Low $P_2O_5$ and high Fe content in leaf appeared in both of artificial and natural symptoms. We concluded that excessive Fe uptake caused BCS to leaf because the solubility of iron was increased in condition of low soil pH.

  • Background: Some phenolics detected in the soil may inhibit the seed germination and seedling growth of ginseng (Panax ginseng). This study investigated the effect of irrigation and ginseng root residue addition on the soil microbial community and root rot disease in 2-year-old ginseng. Methods and Results: Each $20{\ell}$ pot was filled with soil infected with ginseng root rot pathogens, and irrigated daily with $2{\ell}$ of water for one month. After the irrigation treatment, ginseng fine root powder was mixed with the irrigated soil at a rate of 20 g per pot. In descending order, ${NO_3}^-$, electric conductivity (EC), exchangeable Na (Ex. Na) and K (Ex. K) decreased due to irrigation. In descending order, ${NO_3}^-$, EC, Ex. K, and available $P_2O_5$ increased with the additon of ginseng powder to the soil. The abundance of Trichoderma crassum decreased with irrigation, but increased again with the incorporation of ginseng powder. The abundance of Haematonectria haematococca increased with irrigation, but decreased with the incorporation of ginseng powder. The abundance of Cylindrocarpon spp. and Fusarium spp., which cause ginseng root rot, increased with the incorporation of ginseng powder. The abundance of Arthrobacter oryzae and Streptomyces lavendulae increased with irrigation. The abundance of Streptomyces lavendulae decreased, and that of Arthrobacter spp. increased, with the incorporation of ginseng powder. Aerial growth of ginseng was promoted by irrigation, and ginseng root rot increased with the incorporation of ginseng powder. Conclusions: Ginseng root residues in the soil affected soil nutrients and microorganisms, and promoted ginseng root rot, but did not affect the aerial growth of ginseng.

  • Beidellite, a member of the smectite group, was synthesized hydrothermally from dickite. Physical and chemical properties of the synthetic Na-beidellite were characterized by the analytical methods of XRD, IR, TG, DTA, EDS, XRF and ICP. The result of Greene-Kelly test indicates that the synthesized smectite is Na-beidellite. IR spectrum of synthesized beidellite exhibited Al-O-H bending vibration at $818\;cm^{-1}\;and\;770\;cm^{-1}$ which was observed particularly in pure beidellite. TGA analysis revealed that the synthesized Na-beidellite comprises $16\;wt\%$ of water. DTA curve showed an endothermic peak at $117^{\circ}C$ due to dehydration reaction and peaks at $482^{\circ}C$ and $685^{\circ}C$ due to dehydroxylation reaction. The clay mineral was transformed to mullite and cristobalite at the temperature of $1028^{\circ}C$. The CEC value, Methylene Blue test and swelling capacity was determined to be $116\~118\;cmol/kg,\;84\~91\%,\;29\~32\;mL/2g$, respectively. The chemical composition of the synthesized phase was identified as $Na_{0.5}Al_{2.5}Si_{3.5}O_{10}(OH)_2$ from EDS and XRF analyses.

  • In this study MeV Si self ion implantations were done to reveal the intrinsic behavior of defect formation by excluding the possibility of chemical interactions between substrate atoms and dopant ones. Self implantations were conducted using Tandem Accelerator with energy ranges from 1 to 3 MeV. Defect formation by high energy ion implantation has a significant characteristics in that the lattice damage is concentrated near Rp and isolated from the surface. In order to investigate the energy dependence on defect formation, implantation energies were varied from 1 to 3 MeV under a constant dose of $1{\times}10^{15}/cm^2$. RBS channe!ed spectra showed that the depth at which as-implanted damaged layer formed increases as energy increases and that near surface region maintains better crystallinity as energy increases. Cross sectional TEM results agree well with RBS ones. In a TEM image as-implanted damaged layer appears as a dark band, where secondary defects are formed upon annealing. In the case of 2 MeV $Si^+$ self implantation a critical dose for the secondary defect formation was found to be between $3{\times}10^{14}/cm^24$ and $5{\times}10^{14}/cm^2$. Upon annealing the upper layer of the dark band was removed while the bottom part of the dark band did not move. The observed defect behavior by TEM was interpreted by Monte Carlo computer simulations using TRIM-code. SIMS analyses indicated that the secondary defect formed after annealing gettered oxygen impurities existed in silicon.

  • The storage variation in the vadose zone at a hillslope is important to understand the hydrological process. This study explores seasonal changes of soil water storage at a hillslope scale. The study was conducted on a hillslope of Beomrunsa, located in the Seolma-cheon river basin in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. Using soil moisture measurements through Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), storage, discharge, and response constant were calculated for all monitoring points on a hillslope between March and November, 2010. This study found that temporal changes in storage are resulted from the rainfall distribution patterns. Analysis of the spatial changes in storage indicated that the soil water storage tends to increase towards the downslope direction. The discharges calculated based on the soil water measurements exhibited a high correlation with observation discharge. The storage response constant was high during the autumn which demonstrates the increased contribution from upslope is responsible for the occurrence of soil water recharge during autumn.

  • Changes in pH of the soaking solution and physical properties of the soybean curd during immersing in solution of different concentrations at different temperatures were determined. Compared with $0{\sim}3%$ NaCl soaking solution, 5% NaCl soaking solution distinctively reduced the pH drop, increasing rate of turbidity and microorganism growth during storage. This indicated the concentration of soaking solution influences the shelf life of curd. As the storage temperature was lowered to $5^{\circ}C$, their changing rates were also reduced. Physical properties such as initial stress $({\sigma}_0)$, elastic constant (E), viscous constant $({\eta})$ and failure test were influenced by storage temperature, but not a function of concentration of salt solution. The result of the sensory test indicated the hardness and salty taste of curd were statistically significant among samples and $1{\sim}5%$ NaCl solutions did not show any significant difference in the salty taste.

  • The contents of starch, moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and ash of different varieties of potatoes were analyzed. The average starch contents of Go-woon, Ha-ryoung, Dae-seo, Jo-won, Ga-won potatoes were $17.9{\pm}0.2$, $18.0{\pm}1.7$, $17.7{\pm}0.5$, $14.8{\pm}0.4$, and $16.2{\pm}1.0%$, respectively. The ground powder of each starchy substrate was suspended in distilled water, and then liquefied, saccharified, and fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC26603 at $30^{\circ}C$ for 4 days. By statistical analysis, the effectiveness of the contents of the different components of the potato tubers on the ethanol production were examined. The results showed that the starch content positively affected the ethanol production. while moisture content affected negatively the ethanol production. Ethanol production from the 5 different varieties of potato tubers harvested on different time were examined and the results indicated that both of potato variety and the harvesting-time significantly affected the ethanol production. Among the several varieties of potato, Ha-ryoung produced the highest yield of ethanol as much as $94.3{\pm}1.9$ L/ton or $3111{\pm}62.7$ L/ha.

  • Establishment of mechanized soybean production system without herbicide is required for organic soybean production in recent. Effects of mechanized soybean planting with partial tillage between growing rye living mulch, which was sown in April or early May, on weed suppression, soybean early growth and yield were investigated with different rye sowing dates and locations in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Effect of rye living mulch on weed suppression at 40~50 days after soybean planting was high as much as 70~90% regardless of rye sowing dates. In particular, a strong suppression effect on the occurrence and growth of Echinochloa crus-galli which occupied 60~80% of total weed biomass was observed. Rye living mulch sown on April 9, of which biomass was more than that sown on April 27, inhibited soybean early growth severely and reduced soybean grain yield in 2007. However, soybean grain yield was no t reduced despite suppression of early growth of soybean plant by living mulch sown during from late April to early May compared with conventional planting. Rye sowing before late April was not proper considering tendency of weed occurrence in spring because of unfavorable changes in weed suppression, early growth and grain yield of soybean according to amount of living mulch.

  • Maize double cropping with winter cereals is important for round-year production of forage or grain, and increase of self-sufficiency of upland grain crops such as maize and wheat. Changes of maize growth and yield for forage or grain according to late planting in June for double cropping with winter barely were investigated compared to proper planting in April for three years from 2007 to 2009. Forage and grain yields of maize planted in mid or late June decreased by 20~30% compared to proper planting in April, but total grain yields per year of double cropping increased by 30~40% compared to single cropped maize. Reduction of ear dry matter was less than that of stalk in late planting within maize plant part. Yield reduction by late planting was the least at Kwangpyeongok, which showed the highest grain yield, 850 kg $10a^{-1}$ in even though late planting in June. Meteorological condition during harvesting time of double cropped maize, which in late September (forage) and mid October (grain), were better than that of conventional maize harvesting time which in late August and mid September. It is thought that more researches for double cropped maize for higher grain production is needed in the future.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of seeding timing and method of rye and/or hairy vetch on seasonal soil and foliar nutrient concentrations as well as fruit quality in a pesticide-free pear orchard. METHODS AND RESULTS: The treatments included as followed: single seeding of rye in September (Sep-Mono), November (Nov-Mono), and January (Jan-Mono), or mix seeding of rye+hairy vetch in November (Nov-Mix) and January (Jan-Mix), or sod culture as a control. Cover crops or vegetation was mown and mulched on the soil surface in April and May for two years. Nov-Mix treatment produced the highest dry matter weight of $12,070kg\;ha^{-1}$, with the lowest dry matter weight for sod culture ($6,520kg\;ha^{-1}$), following Jan-Mix ($7,030kg\;ha^{-1}$). Nov-Mix treatments increased potential amount of N, P, and K from the raw materials of the cover crops as well as improved soil physical properties. Nov-Mix treatments overall elevated soil pH, EC, organic matter, and $P_2O_5$ in May compared to other cover crop treatments or sod culture. The difference of the seasonal nutrient concentrations in leaves or fruit qualities were not consistently occurred amongst treatments. CONCLUSION: Nov-Mix treatments showed playing role in a substitute of a chemical fertilizer. Delayed seeding of cover crops such as Jan-Mix did not increase the potential dry matter production due to the short growing period, and the seeding time would affect the dry matter production of cover crops.
