  • Comparing the adsorption characteristics of coconut shell activated carbon (CSAC) and waste paint activated carbon (WPAC), Freundlich adsorption isotherms of alkylbenzene sulfonate (ABS) obtained from the secondary treatment water of H company and effluent of D company were estimated q=23.12 $C^{0.42}$ , q=18.32 $C^{0.38}$ with WPAC and $q=36.76C^{1.37}$ /, q=26.67 $C^{0.42}$ with CSAC respectively. In the case of H company, breakthrough time of the ABS using CSAC by continuous experiment was estimated 680 minute md that of WPAC was 610 minute. In the case of D company effluent, CSAC was estimated 720 minute, and that of WPAC was estimated 640 minute to reach the breakthrough. From the above results, it is possible to replace the coco-nut shell activated carbon with wasted paint activated carbon.

  • Corrosion inhibition by synthesised ligand, 2-acetylpyridine 4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (HAcETSc) and its tin(IV) complex, dichlorobutyltin(IV) 2-acetylpyridine 4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone ($Sn(HAcETSc)BuCl_2$) on mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) was studied using weight loss measurement, potentiodynamic polarisation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The inhibition efficiency increases by increasing the inhibitor concentrations. The polarisation study showed that both synthesised compounds were mixed type inhibitors. The electrochemical impedance study showed that the presence of inhibitors caused the charge transfer resistance to increase as the concentration of inhibitors increased. The adsorption of these compounds on mild steel surface was found to obey Langmuir's adsorption isotherm with the free energy of adsorption ${\Delta}G{^o}_{ads}$ of -3.7 kJ/mol and -7.7 kJ/mol for ligand and complex respectively, indicating physisorption interaction between the inhibitors and 1 M HCl solution.

  • This study evaluated the biosorption properties of calcium ion using Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS). A sequencing batch reactor was used to induce the production of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) through salinity injection, and the calcium ion adsorption efficiency was analyzed by a batch test. The EPS contents showed significant changes (104-136 mg/g MLVSS) at different salinity concentrations. The calcium ion adsorption efficiency was highest for AGS collected at 5.0% salinity, and it was confirmed that the biosorption efficiency of AGS was increased owing to the increase in EPS content. The results of the Freundlich isotherms showed that the ion binding strength (1/n) was 0.3941-0.7242 and the adsorption capacity ($K_f$) was 2.4082-3.3312. The specific surface area and the pore size of the AGS were $586.1m^2/g$ and 0.7547 nm, respectively, which were not significantly different from each other. It was confirmed that the influence of biological properties, such as EPS content, was relatively large among the factors affecting calcium ion adsorption.

  • The corrosion inhibiting mechanism of Vietnam orange peel essential oil (OPEO) for mild steel in 1 N HCl solution was investigated elaborately. Corrosion inhibition ability of OPEO was characterized by electrochemical polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and weight loss method. In the corrosive solution, OPEO worked as a mixed inhibitor and the inhibition efficiency of OPEO increased with the increase of its concentration. High inhibition efficiencies over 90% were achieved for the concentration of 3 - 4 g/L OPEO, comparable to that of 3.5 g/L urotropine (URO), a commercial corrosion inhibitor for acid media used in industry. By using adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir, Temkin and Frumkin), thermodynamic parameters of adsorption were calculated. The obtained results indicated physical adsorption mechanism of OPEO on the steel surface. The components responsible for the corrosion inhibition activity of OPEO were not only D-limonene, but also other compounds, which contain C=O, C=C, O-H, C-O-C, -C=CH and C-H bonding groups in the molecules.

  • The corrosion inhibition of cast iron in 1 M HCl by Phenanthroline (Phen) was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), surface analysis and theoretical calculations. It is found that Phen exhibits high inhibition activity towards the corrosive action of HCl and its adsorption obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that inhibition efficiency increases with Phen concentration up to a maximum value of 96% at 1.4 mM, and decreases slightly with the increase in temperature. The free adsorption energy value indicates that Phen adsorbs on cast iron surface in 1 M HCl via a simultaneous physisorption and chemisorption mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of a protective film on cast iron surface, resulting in the improvement of its corrosion resistance in the studied aggressive solution. Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level were achieved to correlate electronic structure parameters of Phen molecules with their adsorption mode.

  • Schiff base quinazoline derivative viz., 3-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)amino)-2-methylquinazolin-4(3H)-one (SB-Q), was synthesized in this study. Its corrosion protection impact on mild steel (MS) in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution was examined by performing weight loss measurements. The protective efficacy of SB-Q on MS in 1 M HCl was investigated based on its concentrations, immersion period, and immersion temperature. SB-Q was found to be an efficient inhibitor for the corrosion of MS. Its inhibition efficiency was improved by increasing the concentration of SB-Q to an optimal concentration of 500 ppm. Its inhibition efficacy was 96.3% at 303K. Experimental findings revealed that its inhibition efficiency was increased with increasing immersion time, but decreased with an increase in temperature. The adsorption of SB-Q molecules was followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The adsorption of the examined inhibitor molecules on the surface of mild steel was studied by density functional theory (DFT). DFT investigation confirmed weight loss findings.

  • Oak wood based activated carbon was modified with surface impregnation of $Fe^{3+}$ and $Al^{3+}$ metal ions mixture for enhancements of phosphate adsorption capacity in aqueous solution. The phosphate adsorption capacity of the prepared metal impregnated carbon (MC) was about 8 times higher than that of the original activated carbon (OC). Adsorption equilibrium capacities of the phosphate increased with increasing system temperature. The adsorption equilibrium isotherm of phosphate on the prepared MC could be represented by the Langmuir equation. Thermodynamic parameters also indicated that adsorption system was spontaneous and endothermic reaction. The internal diffusion coefficient was measured to analyze the adsorption behavior and kinetic rate. To determine the internal diffusion coefficient, pore diffusion model (PDM) was employed and the result was in good agreement with experimental data.

  • The ability of natural and modified clay to adsorb phenol was studied. The clay samples were analyzed by different technical instruments, such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FT-IR spectroscopy. Surface area, pore volume and average pore diameter were also determined using B.E.T method. Up to 73 and 99% of phenol was successfully adsorbed by natural and activated clay, respectively, from the aqueous solution. The experiments carried out show that the time required to reach the equilibrium of phenol adsorption on all the samples is very close to 60 min. The amount of phenol adsorbed shows a declining trend with higher pH as well as with lower pH, with most extreme elimination of phenol at pH 4. The adsorption of phenol increases proportionally with the initial phenol concentration. The maximum adsorption capacity at 25 ℃ and pH 4 was 29.661 mg/g for modified clay (NaMt). However, the effect of temperature on phenol adsorption was not significant. The simple modification causes the formation of smaller pores in the solid particles, resulting in a higher surface area of NaMt. The equilibrium results in aqueous systems were well fitted by the Freundlich isotherm equation (R2 > 0.98). Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption process is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 > 0.99). The adsorption of phenol on natural and modified clay was spontaneous and exothermal.

  • Adsorption characteristics of acid green 27 dye using activated carbon were investigated as function of adsorbent dose, pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Freundlich isotherm explained adsorption of acid green 27 dye very well and Freundlich separation factors (1/n=0.293~0.387) were found that this process could be employed as effective treatment method. Kinetic studies showed that the kinetic data were well described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model. Pseudo second rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with the increase in initial acid green 27 concentration. Activation energy (10.457 kJ/mol) and enthalpy (79.946 kJ/mol) indicated that adsorption process was physisorption and endothermic. Since Gibbs free energy decreased with increasing temperature, spontaneity of adsorption reaction increased with increasing temperature in the temperature range of 298 K~318 K.

  • The adsorption characteristics of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions has been studied by using chitin as an adsorbent. The pure chitin was obtained from the extraction of red-crab shell dumped by fish factory. Adsorption kinetics of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions on the chitin reached at the maximum adsorption within two minutes. Adsorbed amounts of heavy metals were pH 7.0>10.5>3.5 in the following order. Adsorption ratio by chitin was 21${\sim}$99% for Cd(II) ion and 24${\sim}$95% for Pb(II) ion. Recovery ratio of Cd(II) ion on the chitin was 22${\sim}$53%, and that of Pb(II) ion was 22${\sim}$73%. The adsorption behavior of these heavy metals was explained well by Freundlich adsorption isotherm.
