  • The purpose of the study is to examine the influences of irrational belief and social support on adolescents' social anxiety. Questionnaires regarding irrational belief, social support, and social anxiety were administered to 566 2nd and 3rd grade middle-school students in Gyeonggi Province. Finally 523 questionnaires were collected and statistically analyzed through t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, hierarchical and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results of the study were as follows: 1) While there were gender differences in social anxiety, irrational belief, and social support sources, no differences in social support types were observed. 2) While social anxiety and irrational belief showed a positive correlation, social anxiety and social support revealed a negative correlation. Additionally, irrational belief and social support showed a negative correlation. 3) Irrational belief(catastrophizing, extreme anxiety and fear, personal perfection, and helplessness), emotional social support, and social support from friends were significant predictors of social anxiety. 4) Irrational belief which predicted each social anxiety subtype was varied.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between irrational belief and psychopathology. The Korean version of Symptom Check List-90-R and Irrational Belief Test were administered to 621 high school students in group. The author used Pearson correlation coefficiency and multiple regression analysis to seek the regression patterns of the irrational belief. The results were as follows. 1) Most of the subscales of the SCL-90-R and Irrational Belief Test were correlated significantly. 2) In multiple regression analysis, the irrational belief associated with anxious overconcern was the most predictable variable for psychopathology.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between spouses and the relationship of irrational belief and marital satisfaction of newly married couples. The data were collected from 121 pairs of newly married couples by using self-administered questionnaire method. Results of paired t-tests showed that the degrees of irrational belief of wives were higher than those of their husbands, and that wives'marital satisfaction were lower than their husbands'. Correlational analyses indicated that irrational belief of both husbands and wives were negatively correlated with marital satisfaction of them, respectively. It was also found that marital satisfaction were significantly different across the differences in irrational belief between spouses. These results were discussed in terms of implications for the family life education for newly married couples and/or premarital couples.

  • This study was conducted to explore the mediation effects of irrational belief on the relationship between game addiction and anger behavior. For this study, 431 middle school boys in Chungcheong areas were included in the analysis. The results showed that game addiction was positively correlated with direct anger-out, rumination, diffusion as well as irrational belief. The boys at high risk of game addiction showed higher mean scores on irrational belief, direct anger-out, rumination: and diffusion than other students. Irrational belief (mediator) partially mediated the influence of the boys' game addiction (independent variable) on direct anger-out, rumination, and diffusion (dependent variable). Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for future study were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of irrational beliefs on parenting stress of mothers with early children. For achieving this purpose, Irrational Belief Test and Parenting Stress Index were administered to 300 mothers with early children in Busan and data from 234 mothers were used for statistical analysis. Collected data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results of correlational analysis showed that irrational beliefs were positively related to parenting stress. Anxious over-concern factor was related to all parenting stress variables. The results of stepwise regression analysis revealed that 2~4 irrational beliefs significantly influenced parenting stress; sub-factors of parenting stress variable that irrational beliefs had the most effect on was competence factor. Based upon these results, it can be concluded that irrational belief is an important variable which predicts parenting stress of mothers with early children.

  • The main purpose of this study was to verify if irrational belief of gambling, impulsiveness, and smartphone addiction could discriminate adolescents' gambling addiction (addiction risk group, non-addicted group). To this end, a survey was performed targeting 1,420 middle and high school students living in Jeju. In order to examine the differences between irrational belief of gambling, impulsiveness, and smartphone addiction according to gambling addiction, independent sample t-test was conducted, and to determine if irrational belief of gambling, impulsiveness, and smartphone addiction could discriminate gambling addiction, discriminant analysis was conducted. As a result, first, there were significant differences between irrational belief of gambling, impulsiveness, and smartphone addiction according to adolescents' gambling addiction, and all the variables were significantly higher in the addiction risk group than in the non-addicted group. Second, irrational belief of gambling, impulsiveness, and smartphone addiction were important explanatory variables to discriminate between the addiction risk group and the non-addicted group. In addition, as a result of examining the relative importance of the variables, irrational belief of gambling was the most important, followed by impulsiveness and smartphone addiction. Third, a discriminant function consisting of irrational belief of gambling, impulsiveness, and smartphone addiction showed a 62.5% hit ratio. This study specified the determinant factors of gambling addiction, and has presented meaningful basic data for developing programs to prevent adolescents' gambling addiction in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine main variables of dysfunctional communication, which worsen marital conflicts in terms of marital interaction and to clarify the relative effects of such variables. The subjects were 295 married males and females, and collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 23.0 program. The main findings are as follows : First, the tendencies of related variables showed that the levels of spouses' perspective taking and routine marital responsiveness were higher for both males and females, while the levels of irrational belief for marital relations and dysfunctional communication were low. Second, an analysis of spouses' perspective taking, routine marital responsiveness, irrational belief in marital relations and correlations of dysfunctional communication showed that spouses' perspective taking and routine marital responsiveness for both males and females have negative correlations with dysfunctional communication. The higher spouses' perspective taking and routine marital responsiveness, the lower the level of irrational belief related to marital relations and the lower the level of dysfunctional communication. This study clarifies that spouses' perspective taking, routine marital responsiveness and irrational faith for marital relations influence marital dysfuctional communication and has an implication, in that the findings can be used as basic data for seeking methods to solve problems of couples who experience conflicts derived from dysfunctional communication.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of irrational beliefs on teacher burnout. Four-hundred twenty-two school teachers participated in this study. Maslach Burnout Inventory and Irrational Belief Test were used to collect data. Collected data were analyzed using stepwise multiple regression. Irrational beliefs significantly predicted teacher burnout. High self-expectation, helplessness, problem avoidance, anxious over-concern and frustration reactivity were significant predictors of teacher burnout. Influence of irrational beliefs on teacher burnout differed according to stages of teacher development and school grade of teacher. The implications of this study on education and counseling for teacher were discussed. Finally future research questions were recommended with the limitations of this study.

  • This study examined the effects of adolescents' stress coping behavior on gambling addiction using the irrational belief of gambling as a mediating variable. For this, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 377 high school students in Jeju. Data processing analysis of the research was verified by Baron & Kenny's regression analysis in 4 phases and a Sobel Test was done to verify the significance level on the mediation effect. The study results can be summarized as follows. First, while problem-focused coping had a negative (-) correlation with gambling addiction, emotion-focused coping had a positive (+) correlation with gambling addiction. Second, the irrational belief of gambling had no mediating effects on the relationship between problem-focused coping and gambling addiction. Third, the irrational belief of gambling had a full mediating effect on the relationship between emotion-focused coping and gambling addiction. In conclusion, emotion-focused coping under stress situations would enhance the gambling behavior by increasing the irrational belief of gambling. Therefore, it is necessary to develop programs to improve the adolescents' stress coping skills and rationally correct their irrational belief of gambling, which will be helpful in preventing adolescents' gambling addiction. The limitations of this study are discussed together with suggestions for future research.
