The damage which radiation produces in tissues such as the lungs can be discussed at the molecular, biophysical, cellular, and organ levels. The cellular effects of irradiating the lungs are related to the histologic and clinical sequelae. In the present study the right lung of rabbits were exposed to single dose of 20 Gy of X-irradiation. Animals from each group were sacrificed monthly for 6 months postexposure. Sections of lung were examined by light microscopy(LM) and by transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Multiple exudative lesions were seen at 2 months after the 20Gy irradiation, and they progressed to a proliferative and then reparative fibrotic lesion by 6 months. Changes in epithelial lining of lung components, particulary the presence of type II pneumocytes were found by both LM and TEM. Capillary endothelial damages were less pronounced. The possible implication of cellular components in radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis is discussed.
Antibiotics have been issued recently in water environments because of potential impacts on ecosystem and public health. This study was aimed to investigating the degradation of antibiotics such as tetracycline, lincomycin, sulfamethazine and cephradine using gamma ray irradiation. And the toxicity before and after irradiation on antibiotics was tested in order to examine the aquatic eco-risk assessment by aquatic organisms. In addition, comparing tests on toxicity for gamma ray and UV irradiated antibiotics was conducted. Four different antibiotics were prepared by concentration of 30 mg/L with demi-water respectively. The absorption dose of gamma ray was ranged from 0.2 to 2 kGy. The concentration of four antibiotics was gradually decreased corresponding to the increase of the absorption dose. A method for toxicity assessment using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was evaluated to the most acceptable compared with methods by Daphnia magna and Microtox$^{(R)}$ in terms of sensibility. It showed that the reduction of toxicity on antibiotics treated by gamma ray was superior comparing to the test results obtained from UV treatment. By-products from antibiotics treated by gamma ray were easily decomposed by microorganism and their toxicity was also evaluated to low.
Despite recent innovation in treatment techniques and subsequently improved outcomes, the majority of glioblastoma (GBL) have relapses, especially in locoregional areas. Local re-irradiation (re-RT) has been established as a feasible option for recurrent GBL of all ages with safety, tolerability, and effectiveness both in survival and quality of life regardless of fractionation schedule. To keep adverse effects under acceptable range, cumulative dose limit in equivalent dose at 2 Gy fractions by the linear-quadratic model at α/β = 2 for normal brain tissue (EQD2) with narrow margin should be observed and single/hypofractionated re-RT should be undertaken very carefully to recurrent tumor with large volume or adjacent to the brainstem. Promising outcome of re-operation (re-Op) plus re-RT (re-Op/RT) need to be validated and result from re-RT with temozolomide/bevacizumab (TMZ/BV) or new strategy is expected. Development of new-concept prognostic scoring or risk group is required to select patients properly and make use of predictive biomarkers such as O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promotor methylation that influence outcomes of re-RT, re-Op/RT, or re-RT with TMZ/BV.

The gamma-radiation sensitivity of three kinds of pathogenic bacteria to fish was investigated. $D_{10}$ values (irradiation dose required to inactivate 90% of the population) of Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio anguillarum and Streptococcus faecalis were 0.08, 0.10 and 0.44 kGy, respectively. The inactivation factors were 4.50 - 24.30 and 6.75 - 36.45 at radiation doses of 2 and 3 kGy. Raw moist pellets were inoculated with Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio anguillarum or Streptococcus faecalis. Inoculated feed samples were packaged in air and irradiated at 5 kGy. This dose was effective in controlling the inoculated and general bacteria in fish feed. We consider gamma-radiation to be an effective method to sterilize pathogenic bacteria in fish feed.
Microbial hydrogel was prepared by ${\gamma}-irradiation$ of poly(${\gamma}-glutamic acid$) (PGA) which was produced from Bacillus subtilis BS 62 and it's physico-chemical characteristic was examined. The hydrogel, prepared from 10% PGA with the dose of 48 kGy, was swollen up to 1,370 times of specific water content as dry weight basis. The hydrogels obtained above the dose of 48 kGy appeared to have higher compressive strength but lower specific water content. The period to reach a swelling equilibrium for the hydrogel in deionized water at the temperature range of 4 to $45^{\circ}C$ was about 10 h. The swollen hydrogel was shrunk in ionic solutions with the increase of ionic strength, and the rate of shrinkage was greater in calcium chloride solution than in sodium chloride. Specific water content of the hydrogel was quickly decreased at $80^{\circ}C$, showing a thennally hydrodegradable property.
The frequencies of gamma-ray-induced micronuclei (MN) in cytokinesis-blocked (CB) lymphocytes at several doses were measured in three donors of Korean native cattle and Korean native goat. Measurements performed after irradiation showed a dose-related increases in MN frequency in each of the donors studied. When analysed by linear-quadratic model the line of best fit was cattle : y : 0.1016D +$0.0118D^2$+0.0147, goat : y = 0.1353D +$0.0043D^2$+0.0087 (y : number of MN/CB cells and D = irradiation dose in Gy). The relative sensitivity of goat lymphocytes compared with cattle lymphocytes was estimated by best fitting linear-quadratic model based on the radiation-induced MN data over the range from 0 Gy to 4 Gy. In the case of MN frequency with 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8, the relative sensitivities of goat lymphocytes were 1.106. 1.166. 1.140, 1.069 and 0.976 respectively. Our in vitro radiobiological study confirmed that the cytogenetic response obtained in blood from cattle and goat can be utilized for application in environmental studies.
In this study, the effects of the electron beam irradiation on the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of the glass fiber reinforced nylon 12 was investigated. The electron beam irradiation was carried out over a range of irradiation dose from 100 to 600 kGy with additive crosslinking agents such as triallyl cyanurate (TAC), triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) for enhancing the crosslinking effects. The gel contents were increased dramatically above 200 kGy. It was verified that the degree of crosslinking depends on the radiation dose. The decreases of the melting temperature and the area of endothermic peak were observed as increasing the absorbed dose in the results of DSC analysis. The enhanced thermal stability was confirmed by the increases of decomposition temperature by electron beam irradiation. Furthermore, the negative deviations of the abrasion loss and the abrasion coefficients confirmed the improvement of the abrasion properties of irradiated nylon 12, as evidenced by SEM observation on the abrasion surfaces. The addition of the crosslinking agents to nylon 12 during effectively improved the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of nylon 12 by the electron beam irradiation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of gamma irradiated-commercial powdery soup under accelerated storage condition $(60^{\circ}C,\;4\;weeks)$. TBA values increased with increment of irradiation dose, but were not affected by storage period. On the other hand, TBA values increased with increment of storage period in non-irradiated sample. pH of irradiated samples decreased as compared with that of non-irradiated sample and significantly decreased as elapse of storage period (p<0.05). Viscosity of irradiated samples significantly decreased as increment of irradiation dose and no significant difference was abserved as elapse of storage period (p<0.05). In Hunter's value, L value decreased but a value and b value were not significantly different with increment of irradiation dose and elapse of storage period. Because gamma irradiation was led to lipid oxidation and decrease in viscosity of commercial powdery soup, these results suggested that further studies should be investigated to reduce detrimental effects induced by irradiation.
Optimum doses The optimum dose that may be defined as the dose below the maximum permissible dose, yet would bring about a significant storage life extension at refrigerated temperatures, varied with species of fish as well as with the postirradiation storage temperatures. Thus the dose of 0. 1 Mrad was considered to be optimum for the croaker and yellow corvenia at $0^{\circ}C$, while at $5^{\circ}C$ the dose of 0.2 Mrad would be suitable for both species. The roundnose flounder was more radiosensitive and even at the dose of 0.1 Mrad a slight irradiation odor was detected immediately after the radiation treatment. Such degree of irradiation odor disappeared upon storage, therefore, the dose of 0.1 Mrad was considered to be optimum for the roundnose flounder at both $0^{\circ}\;and\;5^{\circ}C$. Storage life extension The croaker meats irradiated at 0.1 Mrad could be held at $0^{\circ}C$ as long as 5 weeks in good acceptable conditions, while the unirradiated control became unacceptable within 2 weeks-3-4 for extension of storage life at $0^{\circ}C$. At the storage temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, the storage life of 0.2 Mrad irradiated samples was extended from less than one week to 4 weeks--4-5 fold extension. The storage life extension of 0.1 Mrad irradiated yellow corvenia at $0^{\circ}C$ was from less than 2 weeks for the unirradiated to 4 weeks-approximately a-s folds and that of 0.2 Mrad irradiated samples stored at $5^{\circ}C$ was from 5 days to 3 weeks 4-5 folds. The roundnose flounder meats irradiated at 0.1 Mrad could held at $0^{\circ}C$ for 3-4 weeks as compared to less than 1 week for the unirradiated and at $5^{\circ}C$ the storage life could be extended from less than 3 days to up to 3 weeks. Thus the storage life extension by 4-5 folds and by 6-7 folds was possible at $0^{\circ}C\;and\;5^{\circ}C$ storage, respectively. Postirradiation storage microbiology and biochemistry In general 10 fold reduction of initial microflora was realized as a result of irradiating fish samples at 0.1 Mrad. The extent of microflora reduction increased with increasing doses applied, but not proportionately dependent. The microbial growth in the irradiated was severely retarded during the subsequent storage period, lagging far behind that of the irradiated control samples except in the late storage phase, when the levels of microflora of the irradiated either approached to or rose above the levels of the unirradiated. The microbiological changes caused by irradiation was reflected in the pronounced suppression of TVB and TMA accumulation during the storage period. This suggests that irradiation treatment brought about both quantitative and qualitative changes in microflora initially present and it is reasonable to suggest that the microflora removed by irradiation in fact represent most of the flora capable of producing TVB and TMA in normal fish spoilage process.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of a gamma irradiation to decompose 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene(TNT) in an aqueous solution. The decomposition reaction of TNT by gamma irradiation was a pseudo first-order kinetic over the applied initial concentrations($25{\sim}100mg/L$). The dose constant was strongly dependent on the initial TNT concentration. The removal of TNT was more efficient at pH below 3 and at pH above 11 than at neutral pH(pH 5-9). The required irradiation dose to remove over 99% of TNT was 40, 80 and 10 kGy, individually at pH 2, 7 and 13. The dose constant was increased by 1.6 fold and over 15.6 fold at pH 2 and 13, respectively, when compared with that at pH 7 When irradiation dose of 200 kGy was applied, the removal efficiencies of TOC were 91, 46 and 53% at pH 2, 7 and 13, respectively. Ammonia and nitrate were detected as the main nitrogen byproducts of TNT and glyoxalic acid and oxalic acid were detected as organic byproducts. The results showed that a gamma irradiation was an attractive method for the decomposition of TNT in an aqueous solution. However, regarding the application of high energy radiation for the TNT decomposition and mineralization, an application of an acidic pH below 3 to the solution before irradiation should be considered.
