We present the low temperature (${\leq}1,000^{\circ}C$) vacuum sublimation behavior of an e-beam evaporative deposited on a SiC film and a method to reduce the vacuum sublimation through an ion beam process. The density of the SiC film deposited using the e-beam evaporation method was ~60% of the density of the bulk source material. We found that the sublimation became appreciable above ${\sim}750^{\circ}C$ under $1.5{\times}10^{-5}$ torr pressure and the sublimation rate increased with an increase in temperature, reaching ~70 nm/h at $950^{\circ}C$ when the coated sample was heated for 5 h. When the film was irradiated with 70 keV N+ ions prior to heating, the sublimation rate decreased to ~23 nm/h at a fluence of $1{\times}10^{17}\;ions/cm^2$. However, a further increase in fluence beyond this value or an extended heating period did not change (decrease or increase) the sublimation rate any further.
The purpose of this study was to observe the changes of the elemental transmission and bond strength between the metal and porcelain according to various kinds of ion beam mixing method. ion beam mixing of $meta1/SiO_2$ (silica), $meta1/Al_2O_3$(alumina) interfaces causes reactions when the $Ar^+$ was implanted into bilayer thin films using a 100KeV accelerator which was designed and constructed for this study. A vacuum evaporator used in the $10^{-5}-10^{-6}$ Torr vacuum states for the evaporation. For this study, three kinds of porcelain metal selected, -precious, semiprecious, and non-precious. Silica and alumina were deposited to the metal by the vacuum evaporator, separately. One group was treated by two kinds of dose of the ion beam mixing $(1\times10^{16}ions/cm^2,\;5\times10^{15}ions/cm^2)$, and the other group was not mixed, and analyzed the effects of ion beam mixing. The analyses of bond strength, elemental transmissions were performed by the electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA), light and scanning electron microscope, scratch test, and micro Vickers hardness tests. The finding led to the following conclusions. 1. In the scanning electron and light microscopic views, ion beam mixed specimens showed the ion beam mixed indentation. 2. In the micro Vickers hardness and scratch tests, ion beam mixed specimens showed higher strength than that of non mixed specimens, however, nonprecious metal showed a little change in the bond strength between mixed and non mixed specimens. 3. In the scratch test, ion beam mixed specimens showed higher shear strength than that of non treated specimens at the precious and semiprecious groups. 4. In the ESCA analysis, Au-O and Au-Si compounds were formed and transmission of the Au peak was found ion beam mixed $SiO_2/Au$ specimen, simultaneously, in the higher and lower bonded areas, and ion beam mixed $SiO_2/Ni-Cr$ specimen, oxygen, that was transmitted from $SiO_2\;to\;SiO_2/Ni-Cr$ interface combined with 12% of Ni at the interface.
ion beam processing of materials for medical application has gained increasing interest in the last decade and the implantation of nitrogen into TI-6AI-4V to improve corrosive-wear performance is currently used for processing of total hip and knee joints. Oxides and nitrides of Ti, Zr, Al, Cr were deposited on TI-6AI-4V substrates by DC magnetron sputtering dual ion beam sputtering and ion beam assisted deposition. The cytotoxicity of these films were investigated by MTT method and showed comparable to untreated TI-6AI-4V Plasm-sprayed hydroxyapatite(HAp) coatings showed excellent cytotoxicity regardless of heat treatment. intermediate layer coatings of nitrides and oxides increased the bond strength of HAp to substrate by intrdducing chemical bond at interface. Heat treatment of HAp coatings also improved the chemical bond at interfaces and increased the bond strength of untreated TI-6AI-4V to 16.4 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ but still lower than 33.1 kg./$\textrm{cm}^2$ of ir oxide as a imtermediate layer caoting.

3D nano-scale manufacturing is an important aspect of advanced manufacturing technology. A key element in ability to view, fabricate, and in some cases operate micro-devices is the availability of tightly focused particle beams, particularly of photons, electrons, and ions. The use of ions is the only way to fabricate directly micro-/ nano-scale structures. It has been utilized as a direct-write method for lithography, implantation, and milling of functional devices. The simulation of ion beam induced physical and chemical phenomena based on sound mathematical models associated with simulation methods is presented for 3D micro-/nanofabrication. The results obtained from experimental investigation and characteristics of ion beam induced direct fabrication will be discussed.

We studied the liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities and the generation of pretilt angles with ion beam exposure on a diamond like carbon (DLC) layer. A high pretilt angle of 3.5$^{\circ}$ with ion beam exposure on the DLC layer can be obtained. A high pretilt angle in NLC by ion beam alignment method on the DLC layer can be achieved.
The level set method has recently become popular in the simulation of semiconductor processes such as etching, deposition and photolithography, as it is a highly robust and accurate computational technique for tracking moving interfaces. In this research, full three-dimensional level set simulation has been developed for the investigation of focused ion beam processing. Especially, focused ion beam induced nanodot formation was investigated with the consideration of three-dimensional distribution of redeposition particles which were obtained by Monte-Carlo simulation. Experimental validations were carried out with the nanodots that were fabricated using focused $Ga^+$ beams on Silicon substrate. Detailed description of level set simulation and characteristics of nanodot formation will be discussed in detail as well as surface propagation under focused ion beam bombardment.
Various inorganic alignment layers of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) molecules were investigated. Ar ion beam (IB) irradiation was utilized for alignment method and homogenous and homeotropic orientations with tilt angle were obtained on the suitable inorganic thin films. Proper doping materials were added to diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. In the case of homogeneous alignment, nitrogen doping affected the increase of pretilt angle, while the fluorine bonding in the DLC films was induced the tilted homeotropic alignment cause its extreme hydrophobic property. These results showed that ion beam irradiation method could be applied to the various alignment mode of NLC such as IPS, TN and MVA.
Effects of the heavy-ion ($^{14}$ N or $^{20}$ Ne) beam irradiation on the response of anthers, growth of calli, germination of seeds, and the early growth after the germination of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. BY-4) were investigated. Anthers precultured for 10 days before the irradiation became brown without callus or shoot induction over 20 Gy of $^{14}$ N and $^{20}$ Ne ion beam irradiation. Relative growth rate of the cultured calli was reduced by the irradiation and became brown significantly 2 weeks after the $^{14}$ N and $^{20}$ Ne ion beam irradiation over 50 Gy. The increased intensity of the heavy-ion ($^{14}$ N, $^{20}$ Ne) beam irradiation resulted in the delay of seed germination and the inhibition of the early growth both in water-treated and non-treated seeds before the irradiation. In addition, the heavy-ion beam irradiation to the imbibed seeds inhibited seed germination more than that to the non-imbibed seeds. The screening approach of non-imbibed seeds with heavy-ion beam irradiation using in vitro culture system was more useful than the filter-paper germination method in investigating the characteristics of heavy-ion beam-irradiated seed population and the screening of morphological variants at the early stage of the plant growth.

The liquid crystal(LC) aligning capabilities of a nematic liquid crystal(NLC) on a homeotropic polyimide(PI) surface using a new ion-beam method were studied. Exposure ion-beam of $45^{\circ}$ incidence angle shows a good LC alignment of the NLC on the homeotropic PI surface. Also, on the homeotropic PI surface, the tilt angle of the NLC by exposure ion-beam of $45^{\circ}$ incidence angle had a tendency to decrease as increased ion-beam energy density. And, on the homeotropic PI surface, the alignment character of the NLC with respect to ion-beam energy was good at 1500 eV. And we achieved satisfactory result for EO character.

We have studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effects on a nitrogen-doped diamond-like carbon (NDLC) thin film layer with ion beam irradiation. The pretilt angle for NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam exposure was observed below 1 degree. Also, we had the good LC alignment characteristics on the NDLC thin films with ion beam exposure of 1800 eV. In thermal stability experiments, the alignment defect of the NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam irradiation above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ can be observed. Therefore, the good thermal stability and LC alignment for NLC by ion beam aligned NDLC thin films can be achieved.
