The effective fracture toughness testing of materials intended for application in Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices is required in order to improve understanding of how micro sized material used in device may be expected to perform upon the micro scale. ${\gamma}$-TiAl based materials are being considered for application in MEMS devices at elevated temperatures. Especially, in Alloy 4, both ${\alpha}_2$ and ${\gamma}$ lamellae were altered markedly in 3,000 h, $700^{\circ}C$ exposure. Parallel decomposition of coarse ${\alpha}_2$ into bunches of very fine (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) lamellae. Parallel decomposition of coarse ${\alpha}_2$ into bunches of very fine (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) lamellae. The materials were examined 2 types Alloy 4 on heat exposed specimen($700^{\circ}C$, 3,000 h) and no heat exposed one. Micro sized cantilever beams were prepared mechanical polishing on both side at $25{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and electro final stage polishing to observe lamellar orientation of same colony with EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction Pattern). Through lamellar orientation as inter-lamellae or trans-lamellae, Cantilever beam was fabricated with Focused Ion Beam(FIB). The directional behavior of the lamellar structure was important property in single material, because of the effects of the different processing method and variations in properties according to lamellar orientation. In MEMS application, it is first necessary to have a reliable understanding of the manufacturing methods to be used to produce micro structure.
Glow discharge mass spectrometry(GDMS) was used to determine the impurity concentrations of the deposited Cu films and the 6N Cu target. Cu films were deposited on Si (100) substrates at zero substrate bias voltage and a substrate bias voltage of -50 V using a non-mass separated ion beam deposition method. Since do GDMS has a little difficulty to apply to thin films because of the accompanying non-conducting substrate, we have used an aluminum foil to cover the edge of the Cu film in order to make an electrical contact of the Cu film deposited on the non-conducting substrate. As a result, the Cu film deposited at the substrate bias voltage of -50 V showed lower impurity contents than the Cu film deposited without the substrate bias voltage although both the Cu films were contaminated during the deposition. It was found that the concentration change of each impurity in the Cu films by applying the negative substrate bias voltage is related to the difference in their ionization potentials. The purification effect by applying the negative substrate bias voltage might result from the following reasons: 1) Penning ionization and an ionization mechanism proposed in the present study, 2) difference in the kinetic energy of accelerated Cu+ ions toward the substrate with/without the negative substrate bias voltage.
Statement of the problem: In case of poor bone quality or immediately loaded implant, various strategies have been developed focusing on the surface of materials to improve direct implant fixation to the bone. The microscopic properties of implant surfaces play a major role in the osseous healing of dental implant. Purpose of study: This study was undertaken to evaluate bone response of ion beam-assisted deposition(IBAD) of hydroxyapatite(HA) on the anodized surface of subperiosteal titanium implants. Material and methods: Two half doughnut shape subperiosteal titanium implants were made. The control group was treated with Anodized surface treatment and the test group was treated with IBAD of HA on control surface. Then two implants inserted together into the subperiosteum of the skull of 30 rats and histological response around implant was observed under LM(light microscope) and TEM(transmission electron microscope) on 4th, 6th and 8th week. Results: Many subperiosteal implants were fixed with fibrous connective tissue not with bony tissue because of weak primary stability. The control group observed poor bone response and there was no significant change at any observation time. However the test group showed advanced bone formation and showed direct bone to implant contact under LM on 8th week. The test group observed much rER in the cell of osteoblast but the control group showed little rER under TEM. Conclusions: The test group showed better bone formation than the control group at the condition of weak primary stability. With these results IBAD surface treatment method on Anodized surface, may be good effect at the condition of weak primary stability.
Statement of problem. The intial stability for osseointegration of implant has been an interesting factor. Especially, in the case of poor bone quality or immediately loaded implant, various strategies have been developed focusing on the surface of materials to improve implant fixation to bone. The microscopic properties of implant surfaces play a major role in the osseous healing of dental implants. Purpose. The aims of this study are to perform a histologic and histomorphometric comparison of the healing characteristics of three different surfaces and the comparison of resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values measured by $Osstell^{TM}$ and perio-test values (PTV) measured by Periotest. Material and methods. A total of 24 screw titanium implants (Dentium Co., Seoul, Korea) with 6mm in length and 3.4mm in diameter, were placed in the mandible of 4 beagle dogs. Implants were divided into three groups following the surface treatment methods: Group I is machined(control group). Group II is anodically oxidized. Group III is coated 500nm in thickness with hydroxyapatite(HA) by ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD) on the anodized oxidization. Bone blocks from 2 dogs were caught after 3 weeks of covered healing and another blocks from 2 dogs after 6 weeks. RFA values and PTV were measured right after insertion and at 3 and 6weeks. Histomorphometric analysis was made with Kappa Image Base System to calculate bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area inside the threads. Pearson's correlation analyses were performed to evaluate the correlation between RFA and PTV, BIC and bone area ratio of three different surfaces at 3 and 6 weeks. Results. 1) In all surface treatment methods, the RFA values decreased and the PTV values increased until 6 weeks in comparison to initial values. 2) At 3 weeks, no significant difference was found from bone-to-implant contact ratio and bone area ratio of three different surface treatment methods(P>0.05). However, at 6 weeks, different surface treatment methods showed significantly different bone-toimplant contact ratio and bone area ratio(P<0.05). 3) In the implants with the IBAD on the anodic oxidization, significant difference was found between the 3 weeks and the 6 weeks bone area ratio(P<0.05). 4) Correlation was found between the RFA values and the bone area ratio at 3 and 6 weeks with significant difference(P<0.05). Conclusions. These results indicate that the implants with the IBAD on the anodic oxidization may have a high influence on the initial stability of implant.
Single $TiO_2$ coating prepared by sol-gel process usually experiences cracks in coating layer. In order to prevent cracks, an inorganic-organic hybrid $TiO_2-SiO_2$ coating was synthesized by combining precursors with an organic functional group. Five different coatings with various ratios of (1:8, 1:4, 1:1, 1:0.25 and 1:0.125) titanium alkoxide (TBOT, Tetrabutylorthotitanate) to organo-alkoxysilane (MAPTS, ${\gamma}$-Methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane) on carbon steel substrate were made by sol-gel dip coating. The prepared coatings were analyzed to study the coating properties (surface crack, thickness, composition) by scanning electron microscope (SEM), focused ion beam (FIB), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were also performed to evaluate the corrosion characteristics of the coatings. Crack free $TiO_2-SiO_2$ hybrid coatings were prepared with the optimization of the ratio of TBOT to MAPTS. The corrosion rates were significantly decreased in the coatings for the optimized precursor ratio without cracks.

Nanostructures have a larger surface/volume ratio as well as unique mechanical, physical, chemical properties compared to existing bulk materials. Materials for biomedical implants require a good biocompatibility to provide a rapid recovery following surgical procedure and a stabilization of the region where the implants have been inserted. The biocompatibility is evaluated by the degree of the interaction between the implant materials and the cells around the implants. Recent researches on this topic focus on utilizing the characteristics of the nanostructures to improve the biocompatibility. Several studies suggest that the degree of the interaction is varied by the relative size of the nanostructures and cells, and the morphology of the surface of the implant [1, 2]. In this paper, we fabricate the nanowires on the Ti substrate for better biocompatible implants and other biomedical applications such as artificial internal organ, tissue engineered biomaterials, or implantable nano-medical devices. Nanowires are fabricated with two methods: first, nanowire arrays are patterned on the surface using e-beam lithography. Then, the nanowires are further defined with deep reactive ion etching (RIE). The other method is self-assembly based on vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism using Sn as metal-catalyst. Sn nanoparticle solutions are used in various concentrations to fabricate the nanowires with different pitches. Fabricated nanowries are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tthe biocompatibility of the nanowires will further be investigated.
When a single inorganic precursor is used for the synthesis of a sol-gel coating, there is a problem of cracking on the surface of coating layer. In order to solve this problem of surface cracking, we synthesized inorganic-organic coatings that have hybrid properties of inorganic and organic materials. Sols of various ratios (1:0.07, 0.2, 0.41, 0.82, 1.64, 3.26, 6.54, 13.2) of an inorganic precursor of Tetrabutylorthotitanate ($Ti(OBu)_4$, TBOT) and an organic precursor of ${\gamma}$-Methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MAPTS) were prepared and coated on stainless steels (SUS316L) by dip coating method. The binding structure and the physical properties of the synthesized coatings were analyzed by FT-IR, FE-SEM, FIB (Focused Ion Beam), and a nano-indenter. Dynamic polarization testing and EIS (electrical impedance spectroscopy) were carried out to evaluate the micro-defects and the corrosion properties of the coatings. The prepared coatings show hybrid properties of inorganic oxides and organic materials. Crack free coatings were prepared when the MAPTS ratio was above a critical value. As the MAPTS ratio increased, the thickness and the corrosion resistance increased, and the hardness decreased.

This paper presents Bi thin films have been fabricated by atomic layer-by-layer deposition and co-deposition at an IBS method. The growth rates of the films was set in the region from 0.17 to 0.27 nm/min. MgO(100) was used as a substrate. In order to appreciate stable existing region of Bi 2212 phase with temperature and ozone pressure, the substrate temperature was varied between 655 and $820^{\circ}C$ and the highly condensed ozone gas pressure$(PO_3)$ in vacuum chamber was varied between $2.0{\times}10^{-6}$ and $2.3{\times}10^{-5}Torr$. Bi 2212 phase appeared in the temperature range of 750 and $795^{\circ}C$: and single phase of Bi 2201 existed in the lower region than $785^{\circ}C$. Whereas, $PO_3$ dependance on structural formation was scarcely observed regardless of the pressure variation. And high quality of c-axis oriented Bi 2212 thin film with $T_c$(onset) of about 90 K and $T_c$(zero) of about 45 K is obtained. Only a small amount of CuO in some films was observed as impurity, and no impurity phase such as $CaCuO_2$ was observed in all of the obtained films.
AC PDP(P1asma Display Pane1)s use the mixture of inert gases to generate a discharge inside the display pixels. Impurities such as CO, $CO_2$ and OH inside discharge region may deteriorate the characteristics of PDP operation during long life time of PDP. Electro-negative gas such as CO can cause the sustain pulse amplitude to rise by attaching electrons which will play an important role in the earlier stage of the discharge. MgO film is used to protect the dielectric layer in AC PDP, and is in contact with the free space of display pixel where it is filled with the inert gas mixture. So, MgO film can be a main source of impurities. In this experiment, we observed the change of impurity generation of various MgO films which were deposited by different methods, by using QMS. (quadropole mass spectrometer) The main impurites were $H_2$, CO and $CO_2$. And with the comparison of the TPD (temperature programmed desorption) result, it can be understood that impurity gases are generated by sputtering of MgO surface not by outgassing. Deposition method had effects on the characteristics of the impurity generation. The MgO film manufactured by e-beam evaporation generated more amount of impurity gases than the MgO films manufactured by sputtering or ion-plating. And also heat treatment of MgO film after deposition decreased the magnitude of impurity gas generation.

We investigated the EO performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. LC alignment using UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. An good EO characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface. Therefore, the EO property of the UV-aligned TN-LCD with UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface is almost the same as that of the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface.
