  • In this paper, a structural damage identification method (SDIM) is developed for cylindrical shells and the numerically simulated damage identification tests are conducted to study the feasibility of the proposed SDIM. The SDIM is derived from the frequency response function solved from the structural dynamic equations of damaged cylindrical shells. A damage distribution function is used to represent the distribution and magnitudes of the local damages within a cylindrical shell. In contrast with most existing modal parameters-based SDIMs which require the modal parameters measured in both intact and damaged states, the present SDIM requires only the FRF-data measured in the damaged state. By virtue of utilizing FRF-data, one is able to make the inverse problem of damage identification well-posed by choosing as many sets of excitation frequency and FRF measurement point as needed to obtain a sufficient number of equations.

  • A series of elastin-like proteins, $SKGPG[V(VKG)_3VKVPG]_n$-(ELP1-90)WP (n = 1, 2, 3, and 4), were biosynthesized based on the hydrophobic and lysine linkage domains of tropoelastin. The formation of self-assembled hydrophobic aggregates was monitored in order to determine the influence of cationic segments on phase transition properties as well as the sensitivity to changes in salt and pH. The thermal transition profiles of the proteins fused with only one or two cationic blocks (n = 1 or 2) were similar to that of the counterpart ELP1-90. In contrast, diblock proteins that contain 3 and 4 cationic blocks displayed a triphasic profile and no transition, respectively. Upon increasing the salt concentration and pH, a stimulus-induced phase transition from a soluble conformation to an insoluble aggregate was observed. The effects of cationic segments on the stimuli sensitivity of cationic bimodal ELPs were interpreted in terms of their structural and molecular characteristics.

  • Two impedance imaging systems of multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography (MFEIT) and magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) are described. MFEIT utilizes boundary measurements of current-voltage data at multiple frequencies to reconstruct cross-sectional images of a complex conductivity distribution (${\sigma}+i{\omega}{\varepsilon}$) inside the human body. The inverse problem in MFEIT is ill-posed due to the nonlinearity and low sensitivity between the boundary measurement and the complex conductivity. In MFEIT, we therefore focus on time- and frequency-difference imaging with a low spatial resolution and high temporal resolution. Multi-frequency time- and frequency-difference images in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 500 kHz are presented. In MREIT, we use an MRI scanner to measure an internal distribution of induced magnetic flux density subject to an injection current. This internal information enables us to reconstruct cross-sectional images of an internal conductivity distribution with a high spatial resolution. Conductivity image of a postmortem canine brain is presented and it shows a clear contrast between gray and white matters. Clinical applications for imaging the brain, breast, thorax, abdomen, and others are briefly discussed.

  • The relativistic Weibel instability has drawn attention as a main mechanism of the magnetic generation in the core of galaxies or in the formation of universe. The Weibel instability is not yet fully understood in the relativistic region. We investigated nonlinear saturation and decay of the relativistic Weibel instability. It is found that the early phase of the instability is in excellent agreement with the linear theory. But, an analysis based on an alternative magnetic trapping saturation theory reveals that a substantial discrepancy between the theory and simulation is revealed in the relativistic regime in contrast to an excellent agreement in the non-relativistic regime. The analysis of the Weibel instability beyond the quasilinear saturation stage shows an inverse cascade process via a nonlinear decay instability involving electrostatic fluctuation.

  • The experimental particle samples included ($Mn_{0.1}Fe_{0.9}$)O-$Fe_2O_3$ and FeO-($Gd_{0.1}Fe_{0.9}$)$_2O_3$ with $Mn^{2+}\;and\;Gd^{3+}$ substitutions in inverse spinel $Fe_3O_4$. A lecithin surfactant was adsorbed onto the magnetic particles by ultrasonication. The samples prepared showed excellent dispersibility at the mean size of 13 nm; their saturation magnetization values were 63 emu/g for the bare and Mn-substituted magnetites, and 56 emu/g for the Gd-substituted magnetite. The crystal structure of the substituted magnetites was very similar to that of the bare magnetite, due to a small amount of 0.1 mole fraction substituted in synthesizing the magnetite. The magnetite fluids, according to T2-weighted MR images, effectively diminished the signal intensity in the liver and spleen of Sprague-Dawley rats.

  • An image attention model and its application to image quality assessment are discussed in this paper. The attention model is based on rarity quantification, which is related to self-information to attract the attention in an image. It is relatively simpler than the others but results in taking more consideration of global contrasts between a pixel and the whole image. The visual attention model is used to develop a local distortion predictor, named color visual differences predictor (CVDP), in color images in order to effectively detect luminance and color distortions.

  • Characterization of special nuclear material may be performed using energy spectroscopy of either the neutron or gamma-ray emissions from the sample. Gamma-ray spectroscopy can be performed relatively easily using high-resolution semiconductors such as high-purity germanium. Neutron spectroscopy, by contrast, is a complex inverse problem. Here, results are presented for $^{252}Cf$ and PuBe energy spectra unfolded using a single EJ309 organic scintillator; excellent agreement is observed with the reference spectra. Neutron energy spectroscopy is also possible using a two-plane detector array, whereby time-of-flight kinematics can be used. With this system, energy spectra can also be obtained as a function of position. Spatial-dependent energy spectra are presented for neutron and gamma-ray sources that are in excellent agreement with expectations.

  • An image fusion method is proposed on the basis of depth model segmentation to overcome the shortcomings of noise interference and artifacts caused by infrared and visible image fusion. Firstly, the deep Boltzmann machine is used to perform the priori learning of infrared and visible target and background contour, and the depth segmentation model of the contour is constructed. The Split Bregman iterative algorithm is employed to gain the optimal energy segmentation of infrared and visible image contours. Then, the nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) transform is taken to decompose the source image, and the corresponding rules are used to integrate the coefficients in the light of the segmented background contour. Finally, the NSCT inverse transform is used to reconstruct the fused image. The simulation results of MATLAB indicates that the proposed algorithm can obtain the fusion result of both target and background contours effectively, with a high contrast and noise suppression in subjective evaluation as well as great merits in objective quantitative indicators.

  • In this study, we presented a method to inspect the mechanical defects of 4680 type lithium-ion batteries through image processing method. The raw X-ray images are filtered with CLAHE, then Radon inverse transformations are calculated to reconstruct 3D computed tomography of the battery. Using Haar-cascade, the ROI is targeted automatically, and the template matchings are applied twice. The variations of contrast between template and background show the appropriate values for detecting tabs. It was shown that the proposed algorithm can detect all the tab inside the battery and the distances between tabs. Finally, we successfully found the geometrical defects of battery.
