  • Most structures of automobile are composed of many substructures connected to one another by various types of mechanical joints. In automotive engineering, it is important to study these connected structures under various dynamic farces for the evaluations of fatigue life and stress concentration exactly. It is rarely obtained the accurate load history of specified positions because of the errors such as modeling, measurement, and etc. In the beginning of design, exact load data are actually necessary for the fatigue strength and life analysis to minimize the cost and time of designing. In this paper, the procedure of practical dynamic load determination is developed by the combination of the principal stresses of F.E. analysis and experiment. Inverse problem and least square pseudo inverse matrix are adopted to obtain an inverse matrix of analyzed stresses matrix. Pseudo-Practical dynamic load was calculated for Lab. Test of sub-structure. GUI program(PLODAS) was developed for whole of above procedure. This proposed method could be extended to any geometric shape of structure.

  • This paper shows the use of wavelet transformation combined with inverse acoustics to reconstruct the surface velocity of a noise source. This approach uses the boundary element analysis based on the measured sound pressure at a set of field points, the Helmholtz integral equations and wavelet transformation for reconstructing the normal surface velocity field. The reconstructed field can be diverged due to the small measurement errors in the case of nearfield acoustic holography (NAH) using an inverse boundary element method. In order to avoid this instability in the inverse problem, the reconstruction process should include some form of regularization for enhancing the resolution of source images. The usual method of regularization has been the truncation of wave vectors associated with small singular values, although the order of an optimal truncation is difficult to determine. In this paper, a wavelet transformation is applied to reduce the computation time for inverse acoustics and to enhance the reconstructed vibration field. The computational speed-up is achieved, with solution time being reduced to $14.5\%$.

  • In survival analysis of observational data, the inverse probability weighting method and the Cox proportional hazards model are widely used when estimating the causal effects of multiple-valued treatment. In this paper, the two kinds of weights have been examined in the inverse probability weighting method. We explain the reason why the stabilized weight is more appropriate when an inverse probability weighting method using the generalized propensity score is applied. We also emphasize that a marginal hazard ratio and the conditional hazard ratio should be distinguished when defining the hazard ratio as a treatment effect under the Cox proportional hazards model. A simulation study based on real data is conducted to provide concrete numerical evidence.

  • The objective of this study is the estimation of the two unknown thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity by an inverse heat conduction analysis using the Levenberg-Marguardt method. One dimensional formulation of heat conduction problem in the model was applied. Two point transient temperature of test pieces and heat flux of inflow were measured under the high enthalpy flow environment. Estimated thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity by an inverse analysis were compared with the known values of graphite test piece. It showed the effectiveness of proposed experimental inverse analysis.

  • In this paper, odor classification and source analysis methods are proposed to trace odor sources in th air at the specific place and period. It is necessary to generate representative patterns in order to classify the various odors efficiently. We, therefore, create 67 kinds of odor representative patterns measured from the main sources. considering the air mixed with various odors, several mixed representative patterns for odor sources are generated with the combination of two or three different odors. In addition, the weight of odor sources for an odor from a civil complaint region are computed using pseudo inverse method. As a result, we can trace and identify the odor sources to lead to a specific odor and the contribution of each source. The results of this study will be useful for settling the civil complaint related with odors.

  • This study deals with the use of the conjugate gradient method for the simultaneous estimation of two unknown boundary heat fluxes on the slab in reheating furnace. Temperature measurements by the experiment are used in the inverse analysis. The heat flux estimations for three different cases of measurement locations in the slab are performed: non-skid, skid, and shift-skid zones. The estimated heat fluxes for three cases indicated the three regions having local peak values of heat fluxes. The estimated temperatures at measurement locations were in good agreements with the measured temperatures within 5% relative error.

  • The meta-analysis has become a widely used tool for many applications in bioinformatics, including genome-wide association studies. A commonly used approach for meta-analysis is the fixed effects model approach, for which there are two popular methods: the inverse variance-weighted average method and weighted sum of z-scores method. Although previous studies have shown that the two methods perform similarly, their characteristics and their relationship have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we investigate the optimal characteristics of the two methods and show the connection between the two methods. We demonstrate that the each method is optimized for a unique goal, which gives us insight into the optimal weights for the weighted sum of z-scores method. We examine the connection between the two methods both analytically and empirically and show that their resulting statistics become equivalent under certain assumptions. Finally, we apply both methods to the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium data and demonstrate that the two methods can give distinct results in certain study designs.

  • In almost all previous hydrological studies, the standard approach adopted for nonlinear time series analysis is to perform system characterization first followed by forecasting. However, a practical inverse approach for forecasting nonlinear hydrological time series was proposed recently To investigate the applicability standard approach method and inverse approach, this study used a theoretical time series (Mackey-Glass time series) and daily streamflows of the Bear River in Idaho. To predict a theoretical time series and daily streamflow, this study used local approximation method. From chaos analysis, chaotic characteristics are found in daily streamflow of the Bear River in Idaho. Resulting from 1, 3 and 5-day prediction, inverse approach method is shown to be better than the standard approach for a theoretical chaotic time series and daily streamflow.

  • Delta parallel robots are now widely used for high-speed applications. However, typical Delta robots, such as ABB Flexpicker suffer from rotating axis with passive prismatic joint subjected to critical speed and so requiring careful maintenance. In this paper, a novel 4-DOF high-speed parallel robot with four legs is presented, which consists of three legs with 90 degree arrangement for translational motions and one remaining leg with rack & pinion gears for rotational motion. The inverse kinematics, velocity, acceleration, statics, and inverse dynamics have been analyzed. From the workspace analysis and inverse dynamics simulation for 0.43 sec cycle time, the 4-axis parallel robot prototype with 12kg payload has been designed. In the future research, computed torque control methods will be developed for the prototype.
