This paper addresses the problem of fault detection and tolerance for asynchronous sequential machines using state feedback control. The considered asynchronous machine is affected by intermittent faults. When intermittent faults occur, the machine undergoes unauthorized state transitions and, for a finite duration, remains at the fault state, not responding to the change of the external input. In this paper, we postulate the scheme of detecting intermittent faults and present the existence condition and design algorithm for a robust state feedback controller that overcomes the adversarial effect of intermittent faults. We also undertake a comparative study between the previous control scheme for transient faults and the present strategy for intermittent faults. The design procedure for the proposed controller is described in a case study.

Election is a fundamental problem in the distributed computing. We consider n nodes in the network with f maximum number of faulty links incident on each node, where $f{\le}{\llcorner}(n-1/2){\lrcorner}$. In general, electing a leader, finding the maximum identifier and constructing a spanning tree belong to the same class in the distributed computing because of the same order of the message complexity. Using a spanning tree, we prove that the lower bound of message complexity for a leader election algorithm in an asynchronous complete network with intermittent link faults is $O(n^3)$.
This paper presents the design of self-checking comparator using the time diversity and the application to 8 bit CPU for the implementation of fault tolerant computer system. this self-checking comparator was designed with the different time Points in which temporary faults were raised by electrical noise between duplicated functional blocks. also this self-checking comparator was simulated in the method of the fault injection using 4 bit shift register counter. we designed the duplicated Emotional block and the self-checking comparator in the single chip using the Altera EPLD and could verify the reliability and the fault detection coverage through the modeling of temporary faults ,especially intermittent faults. at the results of this research, the reliability and the fault detection coverage were implemented through the self-checking comparator using the time diversity.

EP(Electrostatic Precipitator) has been used to keep the natural environment from fly-ash in the industrial fields and operated in intermittent PEC(Pulse Energized Control) mode to improve dust-collecting efficiency. Intermittent PEC mode induces low-frequency harmonic currents into power system, therefore EP transformer vibrates. This continuous transformer vibration developes transformer abnormal audio-noise and if it is too much or operates in the region of natural frequency, transformer will be damaged in the end. EP interruption caused by transformer damage results in power generation stopped, power quality down and economic loss. Therefore, this paper explains harmonic currents and transformer vibration-core vibration, winding vibration, and proposes the measures of suppressing the vibration with EP operated in intermittent PEC mode. And this results is proposed to be used for future EP transformer design or EP control method to operate EP-concerned equipment safely keeping from system faults caused by transformer vibration.

Single Event Transient has a critical impact on highly integrated logic circuits which are currently common in various commercial and consumer electronic devices. Reliability against the soft and intermittent faults will become a key metric to evaluate such complex system on chip designs. Our previous work analyzing soft errors was focused on parallelizing and optimizing error propagation procedures for individual transient faults on logic and sequential cells. In this paper, we present a new propagation technique where a fault binary decision diagram (BDD) continues to merge every new fault generated from the subsequent logic gate traversal. BDD-based transient fault analysis has been known to provide the most accurate results that consider both electrical and logical properties for the given design. However, it suffers from a limitation in storing and handling BDDs that can be increased in size and operations by the exponential order. On the other hand, the proposed method requires only a visit to each logic gate traversal and unnecessary BDDs can be removed or reduced. This results in an approximately 20-200 fold speed increase while the existing parallelized procedure is only 3-4 times faster than the baseline algorithm.

Jeju power system is connected to the mainland power system through HVDC, and receives about half of required electricity through the HVDC lines. Jeju power system already experienced black out when a generator tripped at the moment of the HVDC line faults. But, UFR operated as was expected when HVDC line fault occurred at that time. As the penetration level of wind turbines increases, it is required to set UFR again considering intermittent wind turbin outputs. In this paper, we address a new way of UFR setting through computer simulation.
After detailed geological mapping, structural and fracture-density data were collected and analyzed in the vicinity of Cheonseong and Jeongjok Mts., Gyeongsangnam-do. A extensive dextral strike-slip fault (Beopgi Fault) Parallel to Yangsan and Dongrae Faults, a dextral-transtensional-NW fault, and a few intermittent faults have been found in the study area. Based on strike and frequency, fracture system has been divided into three sets such as NNE-trending J1 ($NS-40^{\circ}E$), WNW-trending J2 ($N50^{\circ}-80^{\circ}W$), and ENE-trending J3 ($N60^{\circ}-90^{\circ}E$). According to analysis of fracture density, it is revealed as follows: (a) Jl is the combination of Y-, P-, and R-shear fractures due to the dextral strike-slip of the Beopgi Fault. (b) J2 is the preexisted fracture zone conducting the intrusion of granite. Two tensional fractures dipping to NNE and SSW respectively have been induced by intrusion of granite and followed crustal uplift. (c) J3 is the tensional fracture developed between Yangsan and Dongrae Faults having NNE trend and dextral strike-slip sense. This study aims to reduce environmental impact and insure stability of underground facilities and tunnels.

STDR (sequence time domain reflectometry) to detect a cable fault using a pseudo noise sequence as a reference signal, and time correlation analysis between the reference signal and reflection signal is robust to noisy environments and can detect intermittent faults including open faults and short circuits. On the other hand, if the distance of the fault location is far away or the fault type is a soft fault, attenuation of the reflected signal becomes larger; hence the correlation coefficient in the STDR becomes smaller, which makes fault detection difficult and the measurement error larger. In addition, automation of the fault location by detection of phase and peak value becomes difficult. Therefore, to improve the cable fault detection of a conventional STDR, this paper proposes the algorithm in that the peak value of the correlation coefficient of the reference signal is detected, and a peak value of the correlation coefficient of the reflected signal is then detected after removing the reference signal. The performance of the proposed method was validated experimentally in low-voltage power cables. The performance evaluation showed that the proposed method can identify whether a fault occurred more accurately and can track the fault locations better than conventional STDR despite the signal attenuation. In addition, there was no error of an automatic fault type and its location by the detection of the phase and peak value through the elimination of the reference signal and normalization of the correlation coefficient.
In this study, we analyzed the causes of major faults in the biogas plant through the case of gas engine failure when cogenerating electricity and heat using biogas as a fuel in the actual sewage treatment plant and suggested countermeasures. Hydrogen sulfide in the biogas entering the biogas engine and water caused by intermittent malfunction of the water removal system caused intercooler corrosion in the biogas engine. In addition, the siloxane in the biogas forms a silicate compound with silicon dioxide, which causes scratches and wear of the piston surface and the inner wall of the cylinder liner. The substances attached to the combustion chamber and the exhaust system were analyzed to be combined with hydrogen sulfide and other impurities. It is believed that hydrogen sulfide was supplied to the desulfurization plant for a long period of time because of the high content of hydrogen sulfide (more than 50ppm) in the biogas and the hydrogen sulfide was introduced into the engine due to the decrease of the removal efficiency due to the breakthrough point of the activated carbon in the desulfurization plant. In addition, the hydrogen sulfide degrades the function of the activated carbon for siloxane removal of the adsorption column, which is considered to be caused by the introduction of unremoved siloxane waste into the engine, resulting in various types of engine failure. Therefore, hydrogen sulfide, siloxane, and water can be regarded as the main causes of the failure of the biogas engine. Among them, hydrogen sulfide reacts with other materials causing failure and can be regarded as a substance having a great influence on the pretreatment process. As a result, optimization of $H_2S$ removal method seems to be an essential measure for stable operation of the biogas engine.
Geophysical data including chirp (3 7 kHz) subbottom profile and detailed bathymetry were obtained over three seamounts in the Ogasawara Fracture Zone (OFZ) of the western Pacific, as a part of manganese crust survey onboard R/V Onnuri in 2003. The OFZ is a 150-km-wide, 600-km-long rift zone, which separates the East Mariana and Pigafetta Basin. The OFZ is unique in that it includes many seamounts (e.g., Magellan Seamounts andseamounts on the Dutton Ridge). The sub-seafloor acoustic echoes obtained near the OFZ were classified into following types on the basis of their characteristics: types I-1(pelagic sediment with parallel or subparallel reflectors), I-2 (pelagic sediment with no internal reflectors), and III-1 (reef build-up complex) on summit; types II-1 and III-2 (basement outcrop) on flank rift zone and upper slope, respectively; type III-3 (slump) on the lower slope and embayment between the flank rift zones; types II-2 (debrite) on the base of slope and basin floor; and types II-3 (turbidite
or pelagic sediment) and II-4 (turbidite) on the basin floor. The mass-wasting that produced the complex of type II-2 debrite and III-3 slump on the lower slope and basin may have been caused by (1) strong tensional stress in the OFZ which may cause the numerous fissures or basement faults and (2) complex of the faults on the summit and steep upper slope. The variations in the echo type of pelagic sediment in the summit of seamounts may be related with the changes in the depositional and/or erosional environments. Type I-2 pelagic sediment, which is characterized by a thin and intermittent coverage, was probably deposited at a sheltered area when the current was strong, whereas type I-1 pelagic deposit occurred during a stage of progressive sedimentation.
