  • Superyachts are passenger vessels whose hull exceeds 24m. They are a kind of luxurious leisure ships. Interior designers can contribute in the field of space design of superyachts. This study is intended to investigate the space elements and their organization of superyachts for putting the base of superyachts interior design. Especially it is focused on the interior space division by structural elements such as the watertight bulkheads and decks. In this study we analyze general arrangements, floor plans of decks, of 31 superyachts and extract space elements and their disposition in three dimension. On the basis of the space arrangement we classify the types of space organization of superyachts. And then we inquire the interior space division of superyachts, which is characterized by the structural elements of the ship. The watertight compartments made by the bulkheads and decks have a great effect on interior space design in super yachts. The results of this study are summed up as follows: At first, the small-size superyacht has 3 decks and the midium or large-size superyachts has 4decks. Secondly, depending on the number of decks the superyachts has several typical patterns of space organization. Thirdly, in general there are 5-6 watertight compartments on a deck depending on the superyachts scale. Finally, there are distinct separation between the passenger's movement and the crew's movement on the ship.

  • A concept of preliminary design for mid-size superyachts is explored. First, the profile of a superyacht is interactively designed with the help of freeform curve functionality and graphical user interface (GUI) based interaction. The hull form is then constructed using major characteristic curves such as design waterline, deck sideline, and sections in addition to the predefined profile curve. After exterior hull modeling is done, the arrangement of significant interior spaces of all decks is carried out. A genetic algorithm is exploited to find a space arrangement by considering space fitness values, space proximity, and stairs connectivity of relevant spaces. A goal of the paper is to offer a step-by-step procedure for superyacht design from scratch or when initial information is not sufficient for complete design. For this purpose, a GUI based superyacht design system is developed. This design approach is expected to help users interactively design mid-size superyachts.

  • This study aims to classify the framework and arrangement of interior columns (Naeju) which are used in single-story Buddhist halls into several types, and to develop a theory on the process of changes among those types. Since interior columns are building materials which hold up the roof structure and make partitions in the interior space of halls, their framework and arrangement is closely linked to the development of building technology and is expected to reflect new architectural needs. The kinds of interior columns classified by the shape of framework are goju, chaduju, oepyonju, naepyonju. The arrangement of interior columns can he classified by two methods: One which counts the number of the interior column arrangements in a hall, and the other whose classification relates with the side wall columns - Jeongchibup and yijubup. With the combination of these classifications, we can divide the framework and arrangement of interior columns into 8 types From the remains of Korean and Chinese Architecture, we can presume that before the late-Goryo period, jeongchibup had always been applied in the construction of Buddhist halls, and gamju(column reducing) had only been used in examples of small scale. After the founding of Choseon Kingdom, however, national policy had weakened the economic power of Buddhist temples. Because of that, large-scale outdoor Buddhist mass was replaced by small-scale indoor mass, and for this reason, though the scale of Buddhist halls became smaller, the need for a broad interior space became stronger. Thus in early-Choseon period, reduction of interior columns became widely spread. Those types of framework and arrangement of interior columns where yijubup was applied were developed because the rear interior columns arrangements, in order to expand the interior space, have moved backward. Among these types, yiju-goju and yiju-chaduju were developed for the Buddhist halls with paljak roof(hipped-gabled roof), where the load of their side eaves caused structural problems at the side walls. And oepyonju type was for the small-scale and middle-scale Buddhist halls which needed more interior space but didn't want the extension of roof structure. From the local and periodic distribution of each types, we can conclude that the types jeongchi-goju, jeongchi-chaduju and yiju-chaduju have been settled as typical technique of local carpenters. Oepyonju was developed later than the other types, but for its merit of low cost, it became a popular type across the nation.

  • As library have become changed. Beyond conventional simple functions such as data storing and recording, the functions of modern public libraries are expended to various directions, for example functions of encouraging residents to utilize information and participate in cultural activities and also a function of life-long education, resulting in playing a role as complex space. As the role of public libraries changes into a complex one, spatial planning reflecting this change is required. Spatial arrangements, furniture arrangements and interior images in 12 public libraries in Seoul were analyzed. As a result of the study, it was found that in spatial arrangements, many public libraries linked spaces by functions. Furniture arrangements have been changing from the closed arrangement to the open arrangement. Interior images were identified as static and simple except digital information space. Accordingly, public libraries have became needed to play a proper role of community facilities for local residents by planning furniture arrangements and conducting interior designs taking characteristics of many different users into consideration.

  • This study examined the various functions of public libraries, as well as user satisfaction and needs. We targeted 6 public libraries in the Seoul and Gyunggi area. After 280 library users were surveyed, the collected data were analyzed with an SPSS for Win 14.0 statistics program, where we used frequency, percentage, mean, T-test, One-way ANOVA, and Duncan's test. The major findings were as follows: 1) Half of the users used educational functional space, mainly in the 10-20 age group, who used it for educational purposes as a student or to prepare for getting a job. 2) There were gaps between the furniture arrangement and user preference since most libraries used a rigid system while users preferred a more flexible arrangement. 3) Space by space, public library satisfaction levels differed according to the users' gender and age. Satisfaction of the digital information room scored high, especially for users in their forties. Since public library users are diverse and require various functions, library interiors should be planned accordingly in terms of furniture arrangement and interior design. In particular, there was a gap between satisfaction by age groups, so libraries must account for community needs by considering the age group demographics of their surrounding areas.

  • The ratio of old persons among the total population is rapidly increasing and the apartment has become to the representative housing type in Korea. This means that many old persons would live in multi-family houses. Therefore the study was intended to examine the preferred characteristics of interior space organization in multi-family house by the aged. The characteristics were the number and usage of bedroom, necessity and type of dress room, type of living room, arrangement of work centers in kitchen, LDK type, the number and layout of bathroom, and type of entrance and balcony. The subjects were 122 old persons who lived in multi-family houses in Ulsan. The individual interview was carried out for collecting the data. The results were as the followings; The characteristics of interior space organization in multi-family houses preferred by the elderly were three bedroom, two bathroom, DK or LDK type, open planned living room, L shape arrangement of kitchen work center, entrance connected directly to outdoor space such as elevator hall or corridor, and the balcony located in front of living room and at the back of small bedroom. Even thouth the average age of population has increased, many apartments still be planned and provided without consideration of old persons. This study would contribute to plan the multi-family houses for the elderly.

  • This thesis analyzed arrangement and mixture method of function elements, which are getting more important in museum planning. It used quantitative method, Space Syntax and Visibility Graph Analysis tool to analyze five case museums. Through this analysis, advantages and disadvantages of two methods were derived and case museums' arrangement and mixture attributes were grasped. Results of the analysis were derived differently by two kinds of plan form which were room to room type and open type. Open typed museum recorded similar graphs of Integration, Visual Integration and Visual Connectivity. Since whole space structures were relatively simple and structure of exhibition halls were opened, the results of Space Syntax and Visibility Graph Analysis had similar graphs. Room to room typed museum showed differences in Integration, Visual Integration and Visual Connectivity. In the result, the most accessible space was lobby and Mediation Space became the center of visibility. Also, the exhibition hall, where the opening of room to room typed exhibition hall was penetrated visually, became a center of visibility. Lobby space, which was close to entrance, had the highest Visibility Connectivity. As Space Syntax could analyze the museum as whole space structure, Space Syntax showed strength in room to room typed museum analysis compared to open typed museum analysis which has relatively simple structure. Visibility Graph Analysis could expect the flow of exhibit distance including visibility analysis unlike the flow of exhibit distance with space arrangement. The exhibition hall, which secures the sight to penetration of an opening, couldn't be analyzed in existing Space Syntax. However, it became the biggest advantages in Visibility Graph Analysis of room to room typed museum. Visibility Graph Analysis derived detailed results in exhibit arrangement so it will be the useful method not only for architecture but also for planning of exhibit arrangement in open typed museum. Through this study, various possibilities on Quantitative Analysis Method of Museum Architecture could be verified. However, the analysis still has limitation of second dimension. Therefore, diverse and liberal following study will be expected to accomplish.
