  • Chitosan-based nanocomposite films were prepared using a solution intercalation method incorporating varying amounts of organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) from 0 to 30 wt%. The nanocomposite films prepared were optically clear despite a slight decrease in the transmittance due to the spatial distribution of nanoclay. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that a certain degree of intercalation or exfoliation formed when the amount of clay in the film was low and that microscale tactoids formed when the clay content in the sample was high (more than 10 wt%). The tensile strength (TS) of the chitosan film increased when the clay was incorporated up to 10 wt% and then decreased with further increases in the clay content of the film. The elongation at break (E) increased slightly upon the addition of low levels of clay up to 5 wt% and then decreased with further increases in the amount of the clay in the film. The water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased exponentially with increasing clay content. The water solubility (WS) and swelling ratio (SR) of the nanocomposite films decreased slightly, indicating that the water resistance of the chitosan film increased due to the incorporation of the nanoclay.

  • Binding interactions of cationic porphyrins, T4MPyP and TMAP with DNA oligomer d(CGCGAATTCGCG), were studied with NMR spectroscopy, W and CD spectroscopic method. Two porphyrins showed significant differences in NMR, UV and CD data upon binding to DNA. T4MPyP was considered to position more closely to DNA bases through partial intercalation as well as ionic intercalation between the positive charges of porphyrin and phosphate group of DNA at 5’-GC-3’steps. Contrast to this, TMAP was thought to bind to phosphate of DNA more or less outside of the groove.

  • Olefinic compatibilized blend(R-PP/R-PE)/layered silicate composites have been prepared by melt intercalation technique directed from $Na^{+}$ montmorillonite(MMT) or organophilic montmorillonites while using magnesium hydroxide as flame retardant. Morphology and flammability properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), limiting oxygen index(LOI), UL94 test. It is found that the compatibilized blend/layered silicate(Cloisite 20A) nanocomposites have a mixed immiscible-intercalated structure and there is better intercalation when a compatibilizer is combined with the polymer and layered silicate to be melt blended. A very large increase in the LOI value was observed with hybrid filler addition and further enhancement in thermal stability and compatibility of blend was obtained for the compatibilized blend containing small amount of layered silicate.

  • In order to increase the specific capacitance and energy density of supercapacitors, non-aqueous supercapacitors were prepared using lithium transition-metal oxides and activated carbons as active materials. The electrochemical properties were analyzed in terms of the content of lithium transition-metal oxides. The results of cyclic voltammetry and AC-impedance analyses showed that the pseudocapacitance may stem from the synergistic contributions of capacitive and faradic effects; the former is due to the electric double layer which is prepared in the interface of activated carbon and organic electrolyte, and the latter is due to the intercalation of lithium ($Li^+$) ions. The specific capacitance and energy density of a supercapacitor improved as the lithium transition-metal oxides content increased, showing 60% increase compared to those of supercapacitor using a pure activated carbon positive electrode.

  • A poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/organosilicate nanocomposite, with enhanced mechanical properties, has been prepared using the melt intercalation method. For this purpose, a new organic modifier has been synthesized for the preparation of organosilicate, which is thermally stable and compatible with PET. The use of the new organosilicate yielded almost exfoliated PET nanocomposite; whereas, the PET nanocomposites prepared by use of commercial organoclays (Cloisite 15A and 30B) show only an intercalated morphology. Particularly, the use of the new organosilicate showed an enhanced tensile modulus, and without sacrifice of the tensile strength and elongation on breaking, while the use of commercial organoclays only exhibit a trade-off between those mechanical properties.

  • The present article is concerned with the overview of carbonaceous materials used as anode materials for lithium ion secondary batteries. This article first classified carbonaceous materials into graphite, soft carbon and hard carbon according to their crystal structures, and then summarised the previous works on the characteristics of lithium intercalation/deintercalation into/from the carbonaceous materials. Finally this article reviewed our recent research works on the mechanism of lithium transport through graphite, soft carbon and hard carbon electrodes from the kinetic view point by the analysis of the theoretical and experimental potentiostatic current transients.

  • The residue compounds of sulfuric acid-carbon fiber system were obtained from P100, M40, TZ307, and T300 fibers. The fibers which easily formed intercalation compound had small change of d002 value, but, large change of diameter of fiber. It was considered that the cracks in carbon fiber were due to the this conflicting result. The resistivities of residue compound of carbon fibers were increased with the large change of diameter of fibers. It is thought that the reason of our results is increasing defects such as crack in fibers. From the UV reflection spectra, it was found that reflectances of residue compounds were all decreased and the residue compounds were more stable than intercalation compounds.

  • The pure product of 2,3-diaminophenazine was prepared by the enzyme-catalyzed reaction of ophenylenediamine-$H_2O_2$-horseradish peroxidase and characterized by UV/Vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behaviour of 2,3-diaminophenazine on the glassy carbon electrode was studied. The interaction between 2,3-diaminophenazine and deoxyribonucleic acid was studied by cyclic voltammetry method and UV/Vis spectroscopy, which indicated that the interaction between them is intercalation. The influence of reacting time was also studied. The binding ratio of the 2,3-diaminophenazine-DNA complex is calculated to be 1 : 2 and the binding constant is to be $5.07{\times} 10^3L{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ at room temperature.

  • In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to elucidate the structural variation of $\alpha-MoO_3$ electrode upon discharge/charge reaction in a lithium ion battery. According to the XAS analysis, hexavalent Mo atoms in $\alpha-MoO_3$ framework are reduced as the amount of intercalated lithium ions increases. As lithium de-intercalation proceeds, most of pre-edge peaks are restored again. However, according to the Fourier transforms of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra, lithium de-intercalation reaction is partially irreversible upon the charge reaction, which is one of the main reasons why the capacity of $\alpha-MoO_3$ electrode decreases upon successive discharge/charge cycles.

  • Clay-dispersed nanocomposites have been prepared by simple melt-mixing of three components, i.e. poly (styrene co-acrylonitrile) copolymer (SAN), poly ($\xi$-caprolactone ) (PCL), and an organophilic clay(Cloisite(R) 30A). In the present study, poly($\xi$-caprolactone) was added in the mixtures in order to facilitate the intercalation of SAN into the gallery of silicate layers, and the molecular weight effects of PCL on the dispersion of silicate layers were compared by changing the amount of added PCL. The degree of dispersion of 10-$\AA$-thick silicate layers of clay in the nanocomposites was investigated by using an X-ray diffractometer and a transmission electron microscope. It was found that PCL added in the mixture facilitate the intercalation of SAN copolymers into the galleries of silicate layers modified with an organic intercalant, resulting in the better dispersion of clay. It was, also, observed that the processing temperature influences the degree of clay dispersion.
