  • Traffic simulation models have been used for assessing various transportation strategies. Through comparing results from a simulation model and real field data, researchers try to show how close the model can reproduce the real world traffic. This model verification step is one of the most essential tasks in modeling procedure. Traffic counts and speeds have been frequently used for the verification or validation. Authors modeled severe PM peak bottleneck situation on the I-40 corridor in Raleigh, North Carolina using DYNASMART-P, a mesoscopic traffic simulation tool and verified the model. NCDOT has Traffic Information Management System which has archive capability for the traffic speeds on the I-40 corridor. However, the authors selected travel time as the field measure for model verification and collected the data using a GPS equipment because the speed data from NCDOT speed detectors are spot speeds which are not appropriate for comparison with link average speed from the simulation model. This paper describes the GPS field data collection procedure, the model verification method, and the results.

  • Several Visualization techniques have been applied in traffic information area. This work is the basic research for applying of interactive visualization techniques when the traffic information is provided to users. Design of interactive visualization techniques were applied to traffic information services. Previous studies for information visualization with interactive visualization techniques were investigated, and the traffic information services currently provided were analyzed. There are many types of interactive visualization techniques, but this study is mainly focused on selecting, querying, linking, filtering and rearranging techniques. The users can obtain the proper and more suitable information for theie needs, because each interactive visualization techniques support interaction between information and users. The traffic information which has one of interactive techniques can be more effective for decision making and utilization. More attention is given to interactive visualization of data and information techniques in transportation field. By this research, it is expected that traffic information services is more effective and can be a foundation work for various interactive visualization techniques in traffice inforamtion.

  • This study suggested combined filtering model to eliminate outlier travel time data in transportation information system, and it was based on Median Absolute Deviation and Voting Rule. This model applied Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) method to follow normal distribution as first filtering process. After that, Voting rule is applied to eliminate remaining outlier travel time data after Median Absolute Deviation. In Voting Rule, travel time samples are judged as outliers according to travel-time difference between sample data and mean data. Elimination or not of outliers are determined using a majority rule. In case study of national highway No. 3, combined filtering model selectively eliminated outliers only and could improve accuracy of estimated travel time.

  • This paper developed social equity indicators for evaluation of bus networks. This paper divided the social equity is into 4 categories such as horizontal equity, horizontal accessibility, vertical equity, and vertical accessibility and social equity was defined as integrated concept of these individual indicators. A simulation was performed by using the newly developed indicators to the toy network. On the basis of the simulation result, the social equity indicators are significant to the relative comparison for each zone. And, it was proved that optimal bus network alternative could be different depending on inclusion of the social equity indicators. Thus, it enabled to evaluate the bus network, as a public resource, considering not only the economic efficiency but also social equity. This paper suggested evaluation method for bus network considering social equity using indicators newly developed.

  • It is widely recognised that the safety-belt is one of the most important and effective vehicle safety features. Nevertheless, actual safety-belt wearing rates are low in Korea, especially rear seats. In Korea, rear seat safety-belt use can be as low as 20%. Consolidating fitment of Safety Belt Reminder(SBR) is one of means to improve belt wearing rates. In this paper, we use the effect of wearing seat belt model as Evans(1991) model. As a key parameter, intial wearing seat belt rates is studied and final wearing seat belt rates is used as scenario related a human compliance variables. In this study, benefit analysis is performed when the effective SBR is made mandatory for all passenger car seat. According to study results, when the fitment of SBR is made mandatory for all passenger car seats in Korea, 119 lives are expected to be saved annually with a 90% observance rate of the SBR. In the same condition, benefit-cost ratio will be 1.84.

  • Pedestrian deaths account for a high percentage of deaths in traffic accidents in Korea, raising interest in pedestrian safety policy. However, since the walk signal time is applied based on the length of the crosswalk without considering the walker and the signal cycle, the walk waiting time is relatively longer than the crosswalk, causing pedestrian jaywalking. In this study, due to an unreasonable signal time plan during a road crossing where a signal is installed, the pedestrian's walk signal was given twice a cycle of crossings, and the operational and safety effects of the signal system were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed, and the operational effects of the signal interval and jaywalking rate were assessed by different signal intervals. The results showed that jaywalking and waiting time decreased, and the shorter the interval between the application of the walk signal time, the less jaywalking is analyzed. However, there is a risk of vehicle conflict due to pedestrian exposure, and measures for expanding safety for operation were proposed.

  • This study developed a deep learning model that predicts rental demand for public bicycles. For this, public bicycle rental data, weather data, and subway usage data were collected. After building an exponential smoothing model, ARIMA model and LSTM-based deep learning model, forecasting errors were compared and evaluated using MSE and MAE evaluation indicators. Based on the analysis results, MSE 348.74 and MAE 14.15 were calculated using the exponential smoothing model. The ARIMA model produced MSE 170.10 and MAE 9.30 values. In addition, MSE 120.22 and MAE 6.76 values were calculated using the deep learning model. Compared to the value of the exponential smoothing model, the MSE of the ARIMA model decreased by 51% and the MAE by 34%. In addition, the MSE of the deep learning model decreased by 66% and the MAE by 52%, which was found to have the least error in the deep learning model. These results show that the prediction error in public bicycle rental demand forecasting can be greatly reduced by applying the deep learning model.

  • Route travel cost in transportation networks consists of actual route travel cost and route perception cost. Since the route perception cost is differently perceived according to each origin and each destination, route search has limitation to reflect the note perception cost due to route enumeration problem. Thus, currently employed advanced traveller information systems (ATIS) have considered only actual route travel cost for providing route information. This study proposes an optimal and a K-route searching algorithm which are able to reflect the route perception cost but encompass route enumeration problem. For this purpose, this research defines the minimum nit of route as a link by adopting the link label technique in route searching, therefore the comparison of two adjacent links which can be finally expanded the comparison of two routes. In order to reflect the characteristics of route perception in real situation, an optimal shortest cost path algorithm that both the forward search from the origin and the backward search from the destination can be simultaneously processed is proposed. The proposed algorithm is applied for finding K number of shortest routes with an entire-path-deletion-type of K shortest route algorithm.

  • The disabled and elderly people have a wide variety of functional impairments. By disability and elderly user group definition, identification of users needs and specification of content requirements were studied. Existing technologies including location, navigation and information exchange devise and communication systems were analyzed to design proper integrated system for indoor and outdoor uses. There are two types of services considered in the project: assisted living services(ALS) including health and emergency needs and assisted mobility services(AMS) with transportation needs. To develop each content, content identification and requirements was studied through interviews and expert consultations. System requirements and specification using usecase technique for disabled and elderly people are discussed.

  • Purpose: In Korea, traffic information is collected in real time as part of Intelligent Transportation System to enhance efficiency of road operation. However, traffic information based on real-time data is different from the traffic situation the driver will experience. Method: In this study, forecasts were made for future highway traffic by day and time period by adjusting the Archived data reference days to 3, 5 and 10 days based on existing traffic Archived data. Results: Fewer days of reference in the past showed smaller errors. The prediction of Monday based on five past histories showed greater errors than the 10 past histories, as the traffic flow on the sixth Monday of 2016 was somewhat different from the usual holiday. Conclution: This study shows that less of the reference days of the past history when estimating traffic volume, the more accurate the data of the traffic history of the event can be used on special days.
