  • Recently, most vehicles has the Automatic transmission system as their transmission system. The automatic transmission system operates with fixed shift patterns. In the opposite of manual operation, it is easy and convenient for driving. Though these merit, the system can not evaluate the driver s intension because of usage of fixed shift pattern. To consider driver s intension, we must consider both the driving intensity of driver and the status of vehicle. In this paper, we developed flexible automatic transmission system by using the proposed moduled neural networks which can learn the status of th vehicle and driver s intensity. As a results, we compare the transmission system using fixed shift pattern and the proposed transmission system and show the good performance in the change of shift position.

  • This paper introduces a technique for calculating the degree of collision risk used in collision avoidance system of AUVs. The collision risk will be reckoned with the fuzzy inference, which uses TCPA(Time of the Closest Point of Approach) and DCPA(Distance of the Closest Point of Approach) as factors. A method to obtain TCPA and DCPA for 3-dimension is suggested. The degree of collision risk is provided to collision avoidance system, and is verified the effectiveness through simulation.

  • In recent years, video detection systems have been implemented in various infrastructures such as airport, public transportation, power generation system, water dam and so on. Recognizing moving objects in video sequence is an important problem in computer vision, with applications in several fields, such as video surveillance and target tracking. Segmentation and tracking of multiple vehicles in crowded situations is made difficult by inter-object occlusion. In the system described in this paper, the mean shift algorithm is firstly used to filter and segment a color vehicle image in order to get candidate regions. These candidate regions are then analyzed and classified in order to decide whether a candidate region contains a license plate or not. And then some characters in the license plate is recognized by using the fuzzy ARTMAP neural network, which is a relatively new architecture of the neural network family and has the capability to learn incrementally unlike the conventional BP network. We finally design a license plate recognition system using the mean shift algorithm and fuzzy ARTMAP neural network and show its performance via some computer simulations.

  • Information and communication technology (ICT) is a promising solution for mitigating road traffic congestion. ICT allows road users and vehicles to be managed based on real-time road status information. In Tanzania, traffic congestion causes losses of TZS 655 billion per year. The main objective of this study was to develop an optimal approach for integrating real-time road information (RRI) to mitigate traffic congestion. Our research survey focused on three cities that are highly affected by traffic congestion, i.e., Arusha, Mwanza, and Dar es Salaam. The results showed that ICT is not yet utilized fully to solve road traffic congestion. Thus, we established a possible approach for Tanzania based on an analysis of road traffic data provided by organizations responsible for road traffic management and road users. Furthermore, we evaluated the available road information management techniques to test their suitability for use in Tanzania. Using the floating car data technique, fuzzy logic was implemented for real-time traffic level detection and decision making. Based on this solution, we propose a RRI system architecture, which considers the effective utilization of readily available communication technology in Tanzania.

  • The safety equipments of railway level crossing which are installed at intersections between roads and railway lines prevent level crossing accidents by informing all of the vehicles and pedestrians of approaching trains. The intelligent safety system for level crossing which employs information and communication technology has been developed in USA and Japan, etc. But, in Korea, the relevant research has not been performed. In this paper, we analyze the cause of railway level crossing accidents and the inherent problem of the existing safety equipments. Based on analyzed results, we design the intelligent safety system which prevent collision between a train and a vehicle. This system displays train approaching information in real-time at roadside warning devices, informs approaching train of the detected obstacle in crossing areas, and is interconnected with traffic signal to empty the crossing area before train comes. Especially, we present the video based obstacle detection algorithm and verify its performance with prototype H/W since the abrupt obstacles in crossing areas are the main cause of level crossing accidents. We identify that the presented scheme detects both pedestrian and vehicle with good performance.

  • Ramp metering is one of the most efficient and widely used control methods for an intelligent transportation management system on a freeway. Its objective is to control and upgrade freeway traffic by regulating the number of vehicles entering the freeway entrance ramp, in such a way that not only the alleviation of the congestion but also the smoothing of the traffic flow around the desired density level can be achieved for the maintenance of the maximum mainline throughput. When the cycle of the signal detection is larger than that of the system process, the density tracking problem needs to be considered in the form of the discrete-time system. Therefore, a discrete-time sliding mode control method is proposed for the ramp metering problem in the presence of both input constraint in the on-ramp and exogenous disturbance in the off-ramp considering the random behavior of the driver. Simulations were performed using a validated second-order macroscopic traffic flow model in Matlab environment and the simulation results indicate that proposed control method can achieve better performance than previously well-known ALINEA strategy in the sense that mainstream flow throughput is maximized and congestion is alleviated even in the presence of input constraint and exogenous disturbance.

  • The Air Quality Sensor(AQS), located near the fresh air inlet, serves to reduce the amount of pollution entering the vehicle cabin through the HVAC(heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system by sending a signal to close the fresh air inlet door/ventilation flap when the vehicle enters a high pollution area. The sensor module which includes two independent sensing elements for responding to diesel and gasoline exhaust gases, and temperature sensor and humidity sensor was designed for intelligent AQS in automobile. With this sensor module, AVR microcontroller was designed with back propagation neural network to a powerful gas/vapor pattern recognition when the motor vehicles pass a pollution area. Momentum back propagation algorithm was used in this study instead of normal backpropagation to reduce the teaming time of neural network. The signal from neural network was modified to control the inlet of automobile and display the result or alarm the situation in this study. One chip microcontroller, ATmega 128L(ATmega Ltd., USA) was used for the control and display. And our developed system can intelligently reduce the malfunction of AQS from the dampness of air or dense fog with the backpropagation neural network and the input sensor module with four sensing elements such as reducing gas sensing element, oxidizing gas sensing element, temperature sensing element and humidity sensing element.

  • The roadside unit (RSU) collects vehicle information from vehicles in the intelligent transportation system (ITS). The vehicle density on the road within the communication range of a RSU is a time varying parameter. The higher the vehicle density, the more vehicle information can be collected. Therefore, the probability of packet collision will be raised. In this paper, an adaptive transmission scheme is proposed to improve the probability of packet reception rate by changing the data rate and transmission period according to the vehicle density. The performance of IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol that is a standard for vehicular communications is evaulated in terms of the vehicle density with the ns-2,33 simulator.

  • Travel speed is an important parameter for measuring road traffic. UTIS(Urban Traffic Information System) was developed as a mobile detector for measuring link travel speeds in South Korea. After investigation, we founded that UTIS includes some missing data caused by the lack of probe vehicles on road segments, system failures and etc. Imputation is the practice of filling in missing data with estimated values. In this paper, we suggests a new model for imputing missing data to provide accurate link travel speeds to the public. In the field test, new model showed the travel speed measuring accuracy of 93.6%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed model significantly improves travel speed measuring accuracy.

  • The use of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is promising to bring better solutions for managing and handling the city traffic. This system combines many fields in advanced technology such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information System (GIS) and so on. The basement of applications in ITS is the effective collections and data integration tools. The purpose of our research is to propose solutions which involve the use of GPS time series data collected from GPS devices in order to improve the quality of output traffic data. In this study, GPS data is collected from devices attached to vehicles travelling on routes in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Then, GPS data is stored in database system to serve in many transportation applications. The proposed method combines the data usage level and data coverage to improve the quality of traffic data.
