  • The effect of the specifications of a silicon-on-insulator vertical slot optical waveguide on the sensitivity of homogeneous and surface sensing configurations for TE and TM polarization, respectively, was systematically analyzed using numerical software. The specifications were optimized based on the confinement factor and transmission power of the TE-guided mode distributed in the slot. The waveguide sensitivities of homogeneous and surface sensing were calculated according to the specifications of the optimized slot optical waveguide.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of STEAM-based research and education (STEAM R&E) projects for secondary school students. From 2012 to 2015, 400 STEAM based Research and Education (R&E) projects have been conducted, and they were selected for this study. The major findings are as follows: First, Science (S) and Mathematics (M) were identified at a high rate in STEAM-based Research and Education (R&E) projects, and Art (A) was identified with the lowest rate. Second, 'STEM' type was identified at the highest rate among STEAM-integrated types. And there were not any trends as the years go by, but STEAM-integrated types, where three or more STEAM elements were integrated, were identified at an increasing rate. It means that students use STEAM elements in various ways gradually. Accordingly, the results suggest: The information material that guide how to utilize STEAM factors diversely should be provided for project participants to improve their creativity and problem-solving abilities.

  • Anabaena sensory rhodopsin is a seven transmembrane protein that uses all-trans/13-cis retinal as a chromophore. About 22 residues in the retinal-binding pocket of microbial rhodopsins are conserved and important to control the quality of absorbing light and the function of ion transport or sensory transduction. The absorption maximum is 550 nm in the presence of all-trans retinal at dark. Here, we mutated Pro206 to Glu or Asp, of which the residue is conserved as Asp among all other microbial rhodopsins, and the absorption maximum and pKa of the proton acceptor group were measured by absorption spectroscopy at various pHs. Anabaena rhodopsin was expressed best in Escherichia coli in the absence of extra leader sequence when exogenous all-trans retinal was added. The wild-type Anabaena rhodopsin showed small absorption maximum changes between pH4 and 11. In addition, Pro206Asp showed 46 nm blue-shift at pH7.0. Pro206Glu or Asp may change the contribution to the electron distribution of the retinal that is involved in the major role of color tuning for this pigment. The critical residue Ser86 (Asp 96 position in bacteriorhodopsin: proton donor) for the pumping activity was replaced with Asp, but it did not change the proton pumping activity of Anabaena rhodopsin.

  • The naval combat system is a distributed system in which various subsystems are integrated and operated together. The integrated management system(IMS) is a software system for systematically and consistently managing the application software which control and operate various devices in such a combat system. Since the malfunction or failure of such an IMS can disable the entire combat system, the IMS is more important than other application software of the combat system. In this paper, we propose a method to guarantee the stable and correct operation of the combat system. To this end, we propose a redundancy scheme composed of one leader and several followers so as to tolerate the failure situation of the IMS. We also propose a leader selection algorithm to select a new leader when the leader fails and can no longer perform its role. To verify the validity of the study, we verify the fault tolerance behavior of the system and the accuracy of the leader selection algorithm.

  • In this study, we investigated whether changes in the pumping speed characteristics of dry pumps due to the conduit can be predicted through simulation. The intrinsic pumping speed was measured in the dry pump characteristic evaluation system of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science, and the pumping speed affected by the conduit was measured using the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) equipment of the National NanoFab Center. Change in the pumping speed were predicted using conductance calculation equations and commercial vacuum-system simulation program, VacTran. A comparison of the results from the two approaches showed that the error rate was within ± 6.5%, confirming the reliability of the prediction. The simulation result was compared with the measured effective pumping speed, and it was confirmed that the error rate was within ± 10%, except in a specific part where the error rate was up to ± 40%. It is considered that the high error rate in some areas is as a result of automatically adjusting the rotation speed of the motor according to the power consumption of the inverter. However, a high simulation accuracy was obtained, demonstrating that the pumping speed characteristics can be predicted through simulation. This has potential application in the design of a vacuum system.

  • A spurious suppressed bandpass filter is proposed and discussed using the stepped impedance resonator(SIR) on a substrate-integrated waveguide(SIW) structure with a double-layer substrate. The second resonance of the fundamental $TE_{10}$ mode can be controlled by adjusting the electrical length and impedance ratio of each SIR. The spurious suppressed SIW bandpass filter shows the measurement results of the insertion loss of 3.98 dB and return loss of less than 11.58 dB at the center frequency of 12 GHz. Also, the second spurious frequency is improved to about $1.5f_0$ compared with $1.33f_0$.

  • To maximize the operational efficiency of production and operations systems, Six Sigma and Lean Production System have been widely used. The main focus of Six Sigma is reducing variations, whereas that of Lean Production System is eliminating losses. To take advantage of the two approaches Six Sigma and Lean Production System was integrated into Lean Six Sigma, and the integrated approach has been used in recent years. In the implementation of Lean Six Sigma, the problems under consideration have often physical or technical contradictions which are difficult to be solved by conventional methods. To solve such contradictions TRIZ is useful in many cases. In this thesis, it is considered that how TRIZ can be applied to Lean Six Sigma. An integrated road-map of Lean Six Sigma and TRIZ is suggested and some cases are reviewed.

  • For more accurate navigation, lever arm compensation is considered. The compensation method for GPS and an odometer is introduced and new compensation methods are proposed for an odometer to consider the effect of coordinate transformation errors and the scale factor error. The methods are applied to a GPS/INS/odometer integrated system and the simulation and experimental results show its effectiveness.

  • A UHF band wireless identification system based on passive surface acoustic wave(SAW) devices is presented in this paper. SAW ID tags were fabricated on Y-Z $LiNbO_3$ piezoelectric substrate with a good electro-mechanical coupling property. To reduce degradation of the antenna performance associated with the piezoelectric materials, an efficient design of the SAW RFID antenna is introduced. By measuring the parameters of the SAW ID tag, the performance of the antenna was tested by experimentation.
