This paper seeks to explore the effects of the board structure and director characteristics on the R&D investment of a company. The results from analyzing 95 Korean listed companies reveal that the directors' demographic characteristics substantially affect the R&D intensity. When the directors are younger, major in science or engineering, and have an experience of studying abroad, they tend to be supportive of R&D, thereby increasing the R&D expenditure. Particularly, the effects of insider directors are shown to be greater than those of outside directors, which implies that the Korean corporate boards are mainly operated by insiders. Furthermore, when the relative power of boards is greater than the management, the effects of inside directors, rather than overall directors, on R&D intensity are weakened.
Existing studies have shown consistent results that a diversification discount phenomenon occurs, which means that the value of the company decreases as the degree of diversification of a company increases. Nevertheless, it is explained by the agency theory as a factor that continues to promote diversification by companies. And in order to solve the agency problem, it is important to form an effective governance structure. In order to solve these problems, this study aims to study how the directors' concurrent information affects the monitoring effect of the board of directors through this affects diversification. To this end, research was conducted on KOSPI companies for 6 years from 2011 to 2016.As a result of the analysis, in the case of the concurrent appointment of the CEO and the inside director, there was a positive (+) effect, but the significance could not be confirmed. In the case of adjunct appointments as outside directors, positive results were confirmed that were significant for diversification.
Purpose - First, this study contextually examines the governance codes of South Africa and South Korea. Second, it analyzes board features of South African (JSE) Mainboard and South Korean (KRX) KOSPI-listed companies. Design/methodology - This review is qualitative and uses data from the annual reports of the selected markets' companies, respective exchanges' official web sites and corporate governance-related web sites in order to examine the corporate governance practices in the two markets. In addition, Nvivo is employed in analyzing the content of the corporate governance codes of the selected countries. Findings - Our analysis indicates that the corporate governance codes of the two countries are evolving to keep up with the international trend of principles-based approach. The composition of the board of directors (BODs) of non-financial companies of both South Africa and South Korea shows no significant variation between the companies with regards to the executive (inside) and nonexecutive (outside) directors. On the contrary, there is a significant variation between South African and South Korean listed companies with respect to diversity. Originality/value - While previous studies are centered on the impact of governance codes on performance, this study intends to contextually evaluate the codes and features of South Africa and South Korea listed companies. This is essential and timely for regulators and policy makers given the importance of corporate governance features such as board independence and diversity in recent times.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of concurrent appointment as a director on the quality of the internal accounting management system (IACS). For analysis, 9,343 KOSPI & KOSDAQ company-year data from 2014-2019, excluding the financial industry, were used. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the quality of IACS decreased as the number of multiple positions in the director increased. Although there is a difference in the roles of inside and outside directors, it was found that the quality of IACS decreases equally as the number of board members. According to the business hypothesis, this can be said to be the result of the agency problem within the company because directors, who were more busy with concurrent positions as directors, did not put sufficient effort into their work. This study suggests that information on the concurrent position of directors can be a new indicator that reflects the characteristics of the board in evaluating the effectiveness of corporate governance.

In this paper, a design method for a dual-band compact slot antenna using SRR(split-ring resonator) conductor is studied. The SRR conductor is loaded inside of a rectangular slot of the proposed antenna for dual-band operation. Final design parameters are obtained by analyzing the effects of the gap between the SRR conductor and slot, and the width of the SRR conductor on the input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics. A prototype of the proposed dual-band slot antenna operating at 2.45 GHz WLAN band and 3.40-5.35 GHz band is designed on an FR4 substrate with a dimension of 30 mm by 30 mm.

This study proposes a method for predicting the reliability of the barrel in small arms by analyzing the dispersion. The periodicity with which the barrel needs to be changed can be determined by detecting the inner surface directly or by inspecting scratches inside the barrel using an optical sensor. However, soldiers and directors in the logistics command need a more easy way to check the periodicity of barrel. Therefore, this study focuses on the relation between the firing round and the dispersion. A simple equation can be experimentally derived from pre-tests and analyses. This equation is confirmed through firing tests. In this sense, it can be easily applied to determine the periodicity with which the barrel of small arms needs to be changed in the field army.

This is a cross-sectional study that suggests ways to activate forest welfare services (FWS) by investigating the infrastructure, service status, and perception on FWS in Korea. In August 2016, a structured email survey was conducted in nation widely. The respondents were mostly directors and general secretary (75.0%). The considerable number (16.3%) of nursing homes (NH) use some floors of the complex buildings that would be difficult to have FWS infrastructure and about 30% of those without forests near the facilities. The directors of NH recognize that FWS has positive effects on the elderly. However, FWS is not an requisite of the longterm care insurance benefit, and so costly and effort-intensive that FWS has not been activated so far. In order to activate FWS in NHs, it is necessary to develop and disseminate the guidelines on FWS that anyone can easily followed. In addition, when the National Health Insurance Corporation evaluates NHs, they should evaluate not only whether there is a wandering or walking space, but also whether it has forest healing factors such as forests. It is also necessary to create a barrier-free environment both inside and outside of NHs, increasing accessibility to the toilet in gardens, paving a passage for wheelchairs and lifts in forests near NHs. Through these efforts, it is expected that FWS will be activated to provide physical, mental rest and comfort, appropriate cognitive stimulation to the NH residents at the end of life.
This study was to investigate the effects of interpersonal relationships on job satisfaction of home-visiting care helpers and the category of interpersonal relationships was subdivided into elderly clients, guardians, colleagues and directors considering the person-to-person nature of home-visiting care helper's job characteristics. A group of 336 care helpers who engaged in home-visiting care service providing facilities in Daejeon City was selected as a research subject, and the data were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 program using reliability, frequency, correlation and hierarchical multiple regression. The results for the final analysis revealed that the effect of socio-demographic features was not significant while, among characteristics of job performances, work priority, turnover experience, and career choice reasons turned out to have significant impacts on job satisfaction. In particular, interpersonal relationships except the one with guardians were found to be the most influential variables and the effects of those relationships on job satisfaction were significant. The influencing power was stronger in relationships with director, elderly clients, and colleagues in order, and the job satisfaction level was higher as they were in better relationships with director, elderly clients, and colleagues. The results of this research shows that it is necessary to set an atmosphere where harmonious interpersonal relationships can be formed inside and outside of facilities in order to improve job satisfaction of home-visiting care helpers.
Magical realism, blooming and improving in Latin America, opened the new vision about reality and rationalism, coming out from the out-styled frame of past. While having common points with unrealistic literature, which uses fantastical components, magical realism is different from Surrealism and fantasy literature that is focusing on reality and realizing reality intensely. In the early stage of this research, magical realism was restricted by the characteristics of literature of Latin America, but the research of magical realism is expanding in planning Post-Modernism nowadays. Lately, the influence of magical realism is identified in literatures, arts, films, and animations over the world; according to the research, however, research about magical realism in animations was not done in Korea before. A Korean independent animation "A coffee vending machine and its sword" was evaluated positively in many international film festivals is valuable as the research of magical realism. Throughout this study, this animation "A coffee vending machine and its sword" was analyzed by its narrative and images. The analysis of narrative consists two parts. One is about the form of narrative and the other is about contents through the story. Analysis of Image is also divided into two parts: background image and character image. In this animation, the protagonist is narrating about the fantastic accidents in his life and his own feelings towards it. The narration leads audience to understand his situation and feelings in meta-fiction. On the surface, audience watches the love story of a normal girl and coffee vending machine in this artwork, but deep inside the animation, it is visible that the directors tried to make audiences think about the life of 880,000-won Generation in Korea. The background image was represented as real places in Seoul including the landmark of Seoul, making mimesis of reality in Korea. The character image has two conflicting aspects with reincarnated warrior, Jinyoungyoung and a coffee vending machine. It is a hybrid-character transmogrifying between two characters. Likewise, "A coffee vending machine and its sword" has the characteristics of Korean magical realism through form, content and image. Through analyzing the Korean independent animation "A coffee vending machine and its sword", this research tried to find a way of using factors of fantasy, of representing reality as a dramatic device and of using magical realism of Korean animation for bond of sympathy with audience.
