A series of spherical porous carbons were prepared via resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sol-gel polymerization in the presence of cationic surfactant (CTAB, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide), wherein the carbon sphere size was controlled by varying the CTAB introduction time after a pre-determined period of addition reaction (termed as "pre-curing"). The sphere size gradually decreases with an increase in the pre-curing time within the range of 30-150 nm. The carbons possess two types of pores; one inside carbon spheres (intra-particle pores) and the other at the interstitial sites made by carbon spheres (inter-particle pores). Of the two, the surface exposed on the former was dominant to determine the electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) performance of porous carbons. As the intra-particle pores were generated inside RF gel spheres by gasification, the pore diameter was similar for all these carbons, thereby the pore length turned out to be a decisive factor controlling the EDLC performance. The charge-discharge voltage profiles and complex capacitance analysis consistently illustrate that the smaller-sized RF carbons deliver a better rate capability, which must be the direct result of facilitated ion penetration into shorter pores.
Single-Camera Stereoscopic Vision three-dimensional measurement system has been developed based upon 30-PTV algorithm. The system consists of one camera $(1k\times1k)$ and a host computer. To attain three-dimensional measurements a plate having stereo holes has been installed inside of the lens system. Three-dimensional measurements was successfully attained by adopting the conventional 30-PTV camera calibration methods. As applications of the constructed measurement system, a water droplet mixed with alcohol was constructed on a transparent plastic plate with the contacted fluid diameter 4mm, and the particles motions inside of the droplet have been investigated with the constructed measurement system. The measurement uncertainty of the constructed system was 0.04mm, 0.04mm and 0.09mm for X, Y and Z coordinates.
The reduced ratio of red:far-red (R:FR) light acts as a measure of the proximity of competitors and plants can detect the potentially competing neighbor plants by perceiving reflected R:FR signals and initiate the response of “shade avoidance” before actual shading occurs. The phytochrome system is responsible for monitoring the changes in the R:FR and initiating the shade avoidance response. The response to low R:FR ratio was studied in a white aspen Populus alba clone ‘Bolleana’ using two filter systems: a clear plastic filter system that allows a R:FR ratio less than 1.0 to pass from adjacent border plant reflection; and a special commercial plastic that blocks FR light and creates a R:FR ratio above 3.0. The reduced R:FR signals enhanced the stem elongation in response to competition at the expense of relative stem diameter growth. Trees grown inside clear chambers were 27 % taller than trees grown inside the FR-blocking filter chambers. Stem taper of clear chamber trees was 16% less than the FR-blocking filter trees. Low R:FR also induced 22% more stem dry weight and 13% greater petiole length per leaf compared to the FR-blocking filter trees. There were no statistically significant differences in leaf area, leaf number increment, and total dry weight between the two light filter treatments.
This research is to measure real-time temperature distribution inside a tissue-mimicking phantom for the safety and effectiveness evaluations of focused ultrasound (FUS) device capable of linear scanning stimulation. Since the focusing area of the FUS stimulation device is smaller than diameter of conventional thermal probe and keeps moving, it is impossible to monitor temperature distribution inside the phantom. By using the phantom with a thin film temperature sensor array inserted, real-time temperature change caused by the FUS device was measured. The translation of the measured temperature peak was also tracked successfully. The present phantom had been experimentally proven to be applicable to validate the performance and safety of the therapeutic ultrasound devices.
An attempt to reduce supersonic jet noise is carried out by using two steady microjets in a round jet. The jet is issued from a round sonic nozzle with an exit diameter of 10 mm. Two micro-nozzles with an inside diameter of 1 mm each are installed on the exit plane at an angle of 45 relative to the main jet axis. Far-field noise was measured at 40 diameters off the jet axis. The angle between a microphone and the jet axis is 30 or 90$^{\circ}$. For an injection rate of 4-6% of the main jet, screech tones were completely suppressed by the microjets. The reduction in the overall sound pressure levels were 2.4 and 2.7 dB for 90 and 30 measuring directions, respectively. However, the enhancement of mixing/spreading of the jet by the microjet was negligible. The reduction of noise is probably due to distorted shock cell structures and/or deformed large scale vortical structures by the microjets.
Experimental results for heat transfer characteristic and pressure gradients of HCs refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 during evaporating inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The test sections which has one tube diameter of 12.70 m with 0.86 mm wall thickness, another tube diameter of 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation. The local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. The average evaporating heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux. It showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than R-22 in 12.7 mm and 9.52 mm. This results form the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air- conditioning systems.
The present work determined the flame structure characteristics of coal syngas combusted inside swirl burners with various nozzle types. Fuel nozzle types are largely classified into two groups of axial and tangential. Experiments were carried out for investigating the effects of fuel nozzle geometry, fuel composition ratio, heating rate, excess air, and degree of swirl on the turbulent diffusion flame structure. To determine the characteristics of the flame structure, axial type fuel nozzle diameter of laboratory-scale combustor is varied to 1.23, 1.96, and 2.95 ㎜ and the direction of tangential type nozzles are varied to radial, clockwise, and counter-clockwise. The comparison of the experimental results was performed to understand functional parameters relating the flame structure. Data analysis showed that the vertical straight flame height generally decreased with increasing swirl number and decreasing axial type nozzle diameter. Flame height established with tangential type nozzle is 3 times shorter than that with vertical type. The flame structures among the 3 different tangential fuel nozzles relatively showed no particular difference. By increasing the heating rate, the width of flame increased generally in both vertical and tangential flame. Within the present experimental parameters of the investigation, flame structure is mainly depends on the nozzle type of the combustor. The visually investigated flame lengths are confirmed through the analysis of temperature profile of each flame.
A numerical analysis was conducted to predict the heat transfer characteristics of a solar receiver which is subject to very high heat fluxes and temperatures for solar thermal applications. The concentration ratio of the solar receiver ranges 1000 and the concentrated heat is required to be transported to a certain distance for specific applications. This study deals with a solar receiver according to internal geometry variation incorporating high-temperature heat pipe. The isothermal characteristics in the receiver section is of major concern. The diameter of the solar thermal receiver was 120 mm and the length was 400 mm and the angle of receiver end wall set $90^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}$. And the diameter of the heat pipe was 12.7 mm, 48 axial channels of the same dimensions were attached to the outer wall of the receiver with even spacing in the circumferential direction. The channels are changed to high-temperature sodium heat pipes. Commercial softwares were employed to deal with the radiative heat transfer inside the receiver cavity and the convection heat transfer along the channels. The numerical results are compared and analyzed from the view point of high-temperature solar receiver.
Klystron which is micro wave amplifier tube are mainly used in fields of science such as accelerator, nuclear fusion, broadcasting, communication fields, and defense industry fields, tract. The quality of Klystron anode and cavity are determined by form accuracy and roughness of the worked surface. Therefore anode and cavity are restricted the from accuracy strictly and the surface roughness be under Rmax 0.03S. As a work material of anode and cavity, the oxygen-free copper, that is used for optical pares of aerospace and laser mirror is selected. An outside diameter of material is $\Phi$100 mm and an inside diameter is $\Phi$30~33 mm. In this study, to find the optimum ultra precision cuffing condition of oxygen-free copper with diamond turning machine, the surface roughness is examined for various diamond toot nose radius, main spindle speed, fred rate and depth of cut. As a result of experiment, we could machined the anode and cavity with a surface roughness within Ra 3.2 nm, a form accuracy within 0.01 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
