  • In manufacturing process of porous glass-ceramics by the filler method, the sintering behaviour of crystallizable glass powder mixed with various salts was studied and also the effects of precipitated crystal phases on the properties of porous glass-ceramics were investigated. Fine-grained crystallizable glass powder was homogeneously mixed with various slat having grain size 100~200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and sintered for densification. After washing out the inorganic salt with distilled water, the porous sintered body was heat treated additionly for crystallization. The MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 base glass was used as crystallizable glass powder and the water soluble salts such as K2SO4 and MgSO4 were used as filler. When K2SO4 was used, leucite crystal phase was formed as a result of the ion exchange and porous glass-ceramics which exhibit high temperature resistance and high thermal expansion coefficient of 17$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ could be obtained. On the contrary, when MgSO4 was used, only slight ion exchange is observed and $\mu$-cordierite and $\alpha$-cordierite crystal phases were formed and porous glass-ceramics which exhibit low thermal expansion coefficient schedule were determined with the results of DTA curves, thermal shrinkage curves and XRD patterns analysis. From DTA curves and thermal shrinkage curves, it was found that the sintering densification have been completed at the temperature range of exothermic peak for crystallization. The pore size distributions and pore diameters were measured by mercury porosimeter. The pore diameter of porous glass-ceramics was 10~15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when 100~200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ grain size of K2SO4 was used and it was 25~30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when the same grain size of MgSO4 was used. The porous glass-ceramics K2SO4 used shows bimodal pore size distribution and its porous skeleton structure was ascertained by SEM observation.

  • Zeolite A helps an increase of detergency performance according to showing the ion exchange effect for polyvalant ions and it's detergency performance could be calculated quantitatively by using the disperse stabilization theory because it is water-insoluble material and is as colloid particles in aqueous solution. In this study, zeta potential of carbon black, cellulose, and Zeolite A were measured in each inorganic salt solutions and applied to the theory of Heterocoagulation in order to evaluate the detergency performance of Zeolite A about the particulate soil at the view point of interaction potential energy. Zeolite A was shown help an increase of detergency performance according to the increasing of the steric repulsion between Zeolite A and cellulose in $Na2CO_3$ solution and the decrease of re-deposition of carbon black on the fabric by rapid coagulation with carbon black in $Na_2SO_4$ solution.

  • Thermal batteries use inorganic salt as electrolyte, which is inactive at room temperature. As soon as heat pellets are fired by an igniter, all the solid electrolytes are instantly melted into excellent ionic conductors. However, the abnormal heat generation by the igniter flame or heat pellets causes the thermal decomposition of the electrode and the melting of the anode, eventually leading to a thermal runaway, which results in overheating or explosion. The thermal runaway can be significantly reduced by the adoption of $Zr/BaCrO_4$ heat papers. In this study, the heat papers with various ratios of fuel (Zr) and oxidizer ($BaCrO_4$) were prepared by the paper-making process. We have investigated the calorimetric value, burning rate, and ignition sensitivity. The ignition test of heat pellets and the discharge test of thermal batteries were also carried out. At the composition of 40 wt.% of Zr, the heat papers showed the highest specific calorimetric value and burning rate. As a result, $Zr/BaCrO_4$ heat paper made by the paper-making process has shown the applicability for thermal batteries.

  • To develop a value-added product from individually quick-frozen oyster Crassostrea gigas extract (IQFOE), we prepared two types of oyster sauce (OS): bottled OS (BOS) and retort pouched OS (ROS). We investigated processing conditions, quality metrics and flavor compounds in each type of sauce. We found that the most appropriate base formular for both BOS and ROS consisted of 40.0% IQFOE (Brix $30^{\circ}$), 15.0% sugar, 6.0% salt, 4.0% monosodium glutamate, 4.0% soy sauce, 3.5% starch, 3.0% yeast extract, 3.5% wheat flour and 21.0% water. The crude protein, salinity and amino-nitrogen contents of the BOS and ROS were 8.2 and 8.3%, 9.3 and 9.2%, and 539.2 and 535.2 mg/100 g, respectively. In commercial oyster sauces (COS), these values were 4.7-6.5%, 9.7-12.0%, and 244.7-504.2 mg/100 g, respectively. The total free amino acids content of ROS was 7,346.9 mg/100 g, and the main free amino acids were glutamic acid, taurine, proline, glycine and alanine. The inosinic monophosphate (IMP) content of the ROS was 131.6 mg/100 g, and the primary inorganic ions were Na, K, S and P. The present BOS and ROS have favorable organoleptic qualities and storage stability compared with COS, and are suitable for commercialization as high-flavor seasoning sauces.

  • IMO to issue some restricted maritime legislation for reducing the adverse environmental impacts arising from such ship exhaust emissions. According to the IMO policy, every ship entering the Baltic SECAs has to equip the gas cleaning scrubber. The discharged waste solution by gas cleaning scrubber contains many types of salts, which to recover some valuable materials before disposal. This study try to achieve valuable salts including AN and AS throughout a few process such as selective organic solvents salting out, low temperature extraction and thermal evaporation. Amongst them, Thermal evaporation with repetition extraction using inorganic solvent was the most optimum to purify the extracted AN. This valuable salt was evaluated by Elemental analysis and Differential scanning calorimetry.

  • This study was carried out to obtain an optimal liquid culture condition for Sarcodon aspratus mycelia. Among various basal culture media the GYS (glucoe-yeast extract-soytone) medium was the best for mycelial growth. The appropriate temperature was $25^{\circ}C$. Starch, maltose or glucose was excellent carbon sources for the mycelial culture, compared to others tested. As nitrogen nutrients, soytone and $NH_4-N$ were the best organic and inorganic nitrogen sources, respectively. Moreover, the optimal concentration of soytone was 3 g per one-liter medium. In addition, we also found that alanine, $(NH_4)H_2PO_4$, and nicotinic acid were the best aminoacid, phosphorus salt, and vitamin, respectively. When all optimal conditions described above were applied to culture medium, we were able to produce 5.7 g dry weight of S. aspratus mycelia per one-liter liquid medium within 20 days.

  • Plant growth promoting (PGP) hormones, which are produced in a small quantity by bacteria, affect in plant growth and development. PGPs play an important role on the crop productivity in agricultural field. In this study, a photosynthetic bacterial strain producing the PGP was isolated from paddy soil. Bacterial isolate was gram negative, rod-shaped and motility positive. From the 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis, the isolate was identified as Rhodobacter capsulatus PS-2. The mass cultivation of R. capsulatus PS-2 was optimized by considering of the carbon, nitrogen and inorganic salt sources. Optimal medium composition was determined as Na-succinate 4.5 g, yeast extract 5 g, $K_2HPO_4$ 1 g, $MgSO_4$ 5 g, per liter. From the result of 500 L fermentation for 2 days using the optimal medium, the viable cells were $8.7{\times}10^9cfu/mL$. R. capsulatus PS-2 strain produced the carotenoid and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). The carotenoid extraction and quantitative analysis were performed by HCl-assisting method. Total carotenoid contents from R. capsulatus PS-2 culture broth were measured as $7.02{\pm}0.04$ and $6.93{\pm}0.05mg/L$ under photoheterotrophic and chemoheterotrophic conditions, respectively. To measure the productivity of IAA, colorimetric method was employed using Salkowski reagent at optical density 535 nm. The results showed that the highest content of IAA was $197.44{\pm}5.92mg/L$ in the optimal medium supplemented with 0.3% tryptophan.
