Reverse osmosis (RO) technology has developed over the past 40 years to control a 44% market share in the world desalting production capacity and an 80% share in the total number of desalination plants installed worldwide. The application of conventional and low-pressure membrane pretreatment processes to seawater RO (SWRO) desalination has undergone accelerated development over the past decade. Reliable pretreatment techniques are required for the successful operation of SWRO processes, since a major issue is membrane fouling associated with particulate matter/colloids, organic/inorganic compounds, and biological growth. While conventional pretreatment processes such as coagulation and granular media filtration have been widely used for SWRO, there has been an increased tendency toward the use of ultrafiltration/microfiltration (UF/MF) instead of conventional treatment techniques. The literature shows that both the conventional and the UF/MF membrane pretreatment processes have different advantages and disadvantages. This review suggests that, depending on the feed water quality conditions, the suitable integration of multiple pretreatment processes may be considered valid since this would utilize the benefits of each separate pretreatment.
Ability of iron acquisition of pathogenic microorganisms functions as a virulence factor. Candida albicans, a fungal pathogen that requires iron for growth, is susceptible to growth retardation by high-affinity iron binding proteins such as transferrin. Recently, we reported that C. albicans could utilize the heme as a part of heme-containing proteins dissociated by heme oxygenase, CaHMX1. In search of another pathway that C. albicans can use to bypass the growth regulation produced by iron limitation, this present study examined utilization of non-candidal siderophores such as Desferal and rhodotorulic acid (RA) for acquisition of inorganic iron by the fungus. C. albicans secreting no siderophores was cultured in iron-free (pretreated with apotransferrin for 24 h) (culture medium). Once growth of the yeast reached stasis from iron starvation, a siderophore was added to the culture media. Results showed that cultures containing apotransferrin within a dialysis membrane recovered growth to the level of untreated controls, whereas C. albicans yeast cells in direct contact with soluble iron-free (apo) transferrin recovered growth only partially. When static growth from iron limitation was reached, the addition of siderophore-apotransferrin complex to culture medium also permitted the yeast to recover growth from apotransferrin growth regulation. All the data show that C. albicans can utilize the non-candidal siderophores for iron acquisition under transferrin regulation as can pathogenic bacteria.
We prepared the photorefractive sol-gel glass based on organic-inorganic hybrid materials containing a charge transporting molecule, second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore, photosensitizer, and plasticizer. Carbazole and 2-{ 4-[(2-hydroxy-ethyl)-methyl-amino]-benzylidene}-malononitrile were reacted with isocyanato-triethoxy silane and the functionalized silanes were employed to fabricate the efficient photorefractive media induding 2,4,7-trinitrot1uorenone (TNF) to form a charge transfer complex. The prepared sol-gel glass samples showed a large net gain coefficient and high diffraction efficiency at a certain composition. As the concentration of photosensitizer increased, the photorefractive properties were enhanced due to an increment of charge carrier density. Dynamic behavior of the diffraction efficiency was also investigated with the concentration of the photosensitizer.
In several leguminous plants such as acasia, arrowroot and bushclover, growth rate and contents of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the tissues and the variation in the culture media were determined. In water cultrue which was free of added nutrients, nitrogen was found to be largely in the form of nitrate(NO3-N). This NO3-N is believed to be the result of nitrification from NH4-N which was apparently released form the plants. From the studies of organ culture with root segments, the amount of nitrogen released and absorbed was found to be proportional to the amount added to the mediuim. Especially, in the N-plot, the amount of nitrogen absorbed by the tissue reached more than 90% of the amount supplied to the medium already in early stage. On the contrary, in the amount free plot, the amount of nitrogen released from the tissue was lower than the minimum level in the N-plot. The amount of total N and P in the cultured tissue was found to be influenced by the amount of nitrogen addedin the medium. However, the amount of K in the tissue was not related to the nitrogen level in the medium, but rather it was influenced by the amount of added potassium. These findings present little difference in the metabolic pattern among the three species plants studied, and suggest that the woody leguminous plants have some common features in tehir metabolic pattern.

Many researchers revealed that collagen contribute to maintaining the skin’s elasticity and inhibit wrinkling of skin. Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) bone (leg bone, foot and tail) infusion contains the various inorganic materials, collagen and chondroitin sulfate. All of this, a large quantity of collagen is included in Hanwoo infusion. Therefore, this study emphasized on the effects of collagen in the Hanwoo bone infusion. For the first time, Hanwoo bone infusions were directly added to the media of Human Dermal Fibroblast (NHDF-c) to test anti-aging effects. First, it was identified that growth rate of skin fibroblast was increased. Furthermore, the Hanwoo bone infusion increased a 50% of fibroblast collagen synthesis. Also, suppression of skin fibroblast aging was confirmed by treatment Hanwoo bone infusion. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the effects of infusion made from Hanwoo leg bone, foot and tail on anti-aging, wrinkle inhibiting and skin fibroblast elasticity maintaining. Therefore, this study identified that traditional infusion has effects that are good for skin elasticity.
As a basic study to elucidate nutritional physiology and composition of synthetic medium of red rotting bacteria, Erwinia carotovora, of ginseng, the effects of hydrogen ion concentration, various kinds of carbon sources, nitrogen source, micrometallic salts and it's concentration on the gorwth of the bacteria were investigated and the results were as follows. Optimal pH in the basal medium for the growth of the bacteria was 6.5. After incubation the pH in culture media was neutralized. Among the various kinds of carbon sources, sucrose, glucose mannitol, but organic acids were not utilized effectively as nutrients. After incubation the pH turned acidic. Alanine as organic nitrogen sources nad ammonium sulfate as inorganic nitrogen promoted the growth, but L-valine and sodium nitrite were the least effective. Ferric chloride 1.0mg/dl and ferrous sulfate 100mg/dl were the most effective as micrometallic sources. Control and boric acid were the least effective. New synthetic medium based on the above results was follows ; Alanine 1.0g, $KH_2PO_4$ 1.0g, sucrose 30.0g, $MgSo_4$$7H_2$O 0.5g, $FeCl_36H_2$O 1.0mg thiamine 200.gamma.g, and distilled water 1000ml, pH6.5.
$\^$31/ P-NMR experiment was performed to detect phophonates (Pn) utilization and degradation in the several different C-P lyase mutants of E. coli and in E. aerogenes and the recombinants. The relative peak intensity (RPI) for the standard samples of 0.5 mM methylphosphonate (MPn) and 1.0 mM aminoethylphosphonate in glucose-MOPS medium showed 0.5 : 1.0 ratio. In the case of BW14329 (.DELTA.phnC-P, .delta.phoA), RPI did not change significantly after 24 hrs culturing, which means it nearly could not utilize Pn. In vivo $\^$31/ P-NMR spectrum of E. aerogens (BWKL 16627) during 3 hrs starvation showed two intense peaks at 0-2 ppm and at near-10 ppm which indicate intracellular orthophosphate (Pi) and pyrophosphate (PPi), respectively. Both of them might be released by degradation of inorganic polyphosphate pool. When MPn is supplied to the medium as an unique P source, Pi content in the cell has the constant, but PPi seems to be slightly decreased. Recombinants (BWKL 16954) grew slower than E. aerogenes in the glucose-MOPS media with various P sources. In vivo $\^$31/ P-NMR spectrum of recombinant did not show any intense signal in the cell. Surprisingly, under the cultivation adding with MPn, a few intense peaks in the region of Pi AND phospate monoester were detected.
A thin spray coating of inorganic black lithium polysilicate (IBLP) on black anodized AZ31B magnesium alloy was fabricated for better corrosion resistance and thermo-optical properties for thermal control of spacecraft components. The morphology of the specimens with and without IBLP-based spray coating was characterized by SEM-EDS techniques. Impedance and potentiodynamic measurements on the specimens revealed better corrosion resistance for the specimen with a thin coating of lithium polysilicate. This was primarily due to the presence of lithium polysilicate inside the micro-cracks of the black anodized specimen, restricting the diffusion paths for corrosive media. Environmental tests, namely, humidity, thermal cycling, thermo vacuum performance, were used to evaluate the space-worthiness of the coating. The thermo-optical properties of the coating were measured before and after each environmental test to ascertain its stability. The specimen with an IBLP-based spray coating showed enhanced thermo-optical properties, greater than ~0.90. Hence, the proposed coating demonstrated better handling, better corrosion resistance, and space-worthiness during the pre-launch phase owing to its improved thermo-optical properties.
This study was carried out to find optimum accumulative solar radiation in 'Carnidal' of Perlite Media. The pH was stable from 6.0 to 6.7 during cultivation. Electric conductivity by drainage was higher water than by supply water and electric conductivity was increased at later. Inorganic compound, such as phosphoric, kalium and magnesium were accumulated in crossed system. Especially, kalium and magnesium were highly accumulated. When solar radiation high, consumption of the amount of nutrient solution were increased. Sap flew was $273g{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ per hour from 10 : 30 to 11 : 00 AM. However there was no relation-ship between solar radiation and the mount of sap flew. When amount of solar radiation was $250W{\cdot}hr^{-1}$, cut rose 'Cardinal' nutrient consumption was 212.8 mL at nutrient supply of 50 mL. The yield of cut rose 'Cardinal' was 154.6 ea/10a in perlite media. In the cut rose 'Cardinal', nutrient solution was 50 mL as supplied at solar radiation of $200W{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ and nutrient solution was 30mL as supplied at solar radiation of $250W{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ at low solar radiation in perlite.
The batch tests were performed to evaluate the applicability of the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) to in-situ treatment of groundwater with high concentration of heavy metals. The lead\chates used in this study were collected from waste rock dump of the Imgy mine, and have a low pH and high metal concentration. The acidity loading was 65kg as $CaCO_3/day$, metal loading of Fe+Al+Mn was 11.6kg/day. This type of water could be treated with biological-mediated sulfate reduction using the organic carbon mixture as a reactive media. The batch tests were carried out with five mixtures that were composed with different mixing ratios of mushroom compost, pine-tree bark, and limestone cheep. Results indicated that the PRB could reduce the acidity loading $CaCO_3/day$ to 12.3kg and reduce the metal loading to 3.3kg/day. Considering about the low pH and high metal loading, the contaminated water may be ameliorated by passing it through the buffering PRB composed with inorganic carbonate materials and then through the PRB composed with the organic carbon mixture which can induce sulfate reduction.
