Many properties of inorganic compounds are sensitive to changes in the point-defect concentrations. In minerals, such changes are influenced by temperature, pressure, and chemical impurities. Olivines form an important class of minerals and are magnesium-rich solid solutions consisting of the orthosilicates forsterite $Mg_2SiO_4$ and the fayalite $Fe_2SiO_4$. Orthosilicates have an orthorhombic crystal structure and exhibit anisotropic electronic and ionic transport properties. We examined the anisotropy of the electrical conductivity of $Fe_2SiO_4$ under the assumption that the electronic conduction in $Fe_2SiO_4$ occurs via a small polaron hopping mechanism. The anisotropic electrical conductivity is well explained by the electron transfer integrals obtained from the spin dimer analysis based on tight-binding calculations. The latter analysis is expected to provide insight into the anisotropic electrical conductivities of other magnetic insulators of transition metal oxides.
The SnO$_2$film was deposited on a corning glass 1737 substrate by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using a gas mixture of SnCl$_4$, $O_2$, and Ar. The film thickness was measured using $\alpha$-step and was about 9400$\AA$. The conventional X-ray diffractometry and pole figure attachment were used to refine the crystal structure of SnO$_2$ thin film. Six pole figures, (200), (211), (310), (301), (321), and (411), were measured with CoK$_\alpha$ radiation in reflection geometry. The X-ray diffraction data were measured at room temperature using CuK$_\alpha$ radiation with graphite monochromator. The agreement between calculated and observed patterns for the normal direction of SnO$_2$ thin film was not satisfactory due to the severely preferred orientation effect. The Rietveld refinement of heavily textured SnO$_2$ thin film was successfully achieved by adopting the pole density distribution of each reflection obtained from the inverse pole figure as a correction factor for the preferred orientation effect. The R-weighted pattern, R$_wp$, was 15.30%.

$LiCoO_2$ powder was synthesized by Sol-Gel method using inorganic materials. The starting materials, $CH_3COOLi^*2H_2O\;and\;Co(CH_3COO)_2{^*}4H_2O$, were mixed in the atomic ratio Li/Co of 1 and dissolved in i-propanol with acetic acid. The solution was dried for gelation, and finally obtained the pre-powder. The pre-powder were studied by thermal analysis. Based on the TGA result, heat treatment was performed at various temperature(500 to $800^{\circ}C$) for 2h in air atmosphere. The crystal structure, morphology, electrochemical property were carried out using XRD, SEM, cyclic voltammetry(CV).

We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment capability by the IB(on bean) alignment method on a NDLC(Nitrogen Diamond Like Carbon) as a-C:H thin film, and investigated electro-optical performances of the IB aligned IPS(In plane switching}cell with NDLC surface. A good LC alignment by IB exposure on a NDLC surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the IB aligned IPS cell can be observed. The goodelectro-optical (EO) characteristics of the IB aligned IPS cell was observed with oblique IB exposure on the NDLC as a-C:H thin film for 1 min.
The discovery of new luminescent materials for use in light-emitting diodes(LEDs) has been of great interest, since LED-based solid state lighting applications are attracting a lot of attention in the energy saving and environmental fields. Recent research trends have centered on the discovery of new luminescent materials rather than on fine changes in well-known luminescent materials. In a sense, the novelty of our study beyond simple modification or improvement of existing phosphors. A good strategy for the discovery of new fluorescent materials is to introduce activators that are appropriate for conventional inorganic compounds, that have well-defined structures in the crystal structure database, but have not been considered as phosphor hosts. Another strategy is to discover new host compounds with structures that cannot be found in any existing databases. We have pursued these two strategies at the same time using composite search technology with particle swarm optimization(PSO). In this study, using PSO, we have tracked down a search space composed of Sr-Al-Si-O-N and have discovered a new phosphor structure with yellow luminescence; this material is a potential candidate for UV-LED applications.
White LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are promising new-generation light sources which can replace conventional lamps due to their high reliability, low energy consumption and eco-friendly effects. This paper briefly reviews recent progress of oxy/nitride host phosphor and quantum dot materials with broad excitation band characteristics for phosphor-converted white LEDs. Among oxy/nitride host materials, $M_2Si_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$, $MAlSiN_3:Eu^{2+}$ M-SiON(M=Ca, Sr, Ba), ${\alpha}/{\beta}-SiAlON:Eu^{2+}$ are excellent phosphors for white LED using blue-emitting chip. They have very broad excitation bands in the range of 440-460 nm and exhibit emission from green to red. In this paper, In this review we focus on recent developments in the crystal structure, luminescence and applications of the oxy/nitride phosphors for white LEDs. In addition, the application prospects and current trends of research and development of quantum dot phosphors are also discussed.
Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.

IR cut-off thin films consisted of ATO nanoparticles were successfully fabricated by sol-gel method. The coating solution was synthesized with organic/inorganic hybrid binder and ATO colloidal solution and ATO thin films were coated on a slide glass with the withdrawal speed of 5~40 mm/s. As the withdrawal speed increased from 5 mm/s to 40 mm/s, the thickness of coating thin films also increased from $1.05{\mu}m$ to $4.25{\mu}m$ and the IR cut-off in wavelength of 780~2500 nm increased from 49.5 % to 66.7 %. In addition, the pencil hardness of ATO thin films dried at $80^{\circ}C$ was ca. 5H and the coating films were not removed after a cross cutter tape test because of the hybrid binder synthesized with tetraethylorthosilicate and methyltrimethoxysilane. The surface morphologies, optical properties and film thickness of prepared thin films with a different withdrawal speed were measured by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and Dektak.

The artificial aggregates were fabricated by using the inorganic wastes, dredged soil produced at a dredging work. The input temperature ($800{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$), output temperature ($1100{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$) and heating rate ($5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$/min) in sintering process were controlled to fabricate the aggregates with various value of density and water absorption, and their properties were analyzed as a function of those factors. The specimens sintered at the lower input temperature showed the higher density and the lower water absorption while those with higher input temperature had many pores inside of the aggregates, lower density and higher water absorption. Also increasing the input temperature accelerated the black core phenomenon in the aggregates. The bloating phenomena which the gigantic pores were generated inside the aggregates were improved as increasing the output temperature, but its effect was lower than that of input temperature. It could be realized that the bloating tendency was improved from the results that the density was increased and water absorption was decreased with increasing heating rate from 5 to $10^{\circ}C$/min. It was found that the artificial aggregates of light or heavy weight with various value of density and water absorption could be fabricated by using dredged soils naturally involving gas and fluxing components by controlling the sintering conditions.
