  • Freezing of the binary solution ($H_2O-NaCl$) saturating a packed bed of spheres is investigated experimentally. The system is cooled through its top surface, and the bottom is maintained at a temperature above the liquidus. Experiments are performed on the hypolutectic side, and the cold wall temperature is lower than the eutectic point. The effects of initial mixture concentration, superheat and glass bead diameter on temperature and concentration distributions are investigated. Supercooling was observed only at early times of the freezing process for experiments with 5% initial salt concentration. Flow visualization experiments and mushy-liquid interface position observations revealed natural convection in the liquid region. Remelting phenomena was not observed at both the solid-mushy and mushy-liquid interfaces.

  • This paper proposes an optimized universal motor for improving its performance using the finite element method (FEM) with the (1+1) Evolution Strategy (ES) algorithm. To do this, various design parameters are modified, such as air gap length, shape of motor slot, pole shoe, pole width, and rotor shaft diameter. Two parameters (arc length of stator pole and thickness of pole shoe) are chosen and optimized using the program, and the optimized model is built and tested with a performance measuring system. The measured values of the model are compared with those of the initial and the optimized model to prove the algorithm. As a result, the final model improves its performance compared with those of the initial model.

  • The microstructural evolution during the equal channel angular pressing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). ECA pressing was carried out isothermally with route C at $600^{\circ}C$ for two types of initial microstructure, i.e., equiaxed and Widmanstatten microstructures. At an initial stage of ECA pressing, the equiaxed microstructure showed more uniform flow than the Widmanstatten microstructure. However, both microstructures were significantly refined revealing nearly equiaxed grains of 0.3$mu extrm{m}$ in diameter with high angle grain boundaries after 4 passes of ECA pressing. These ultrafine gains were found to be stable with little grain growth, when annealed up to $600^{\circ}C$ for 1hr.

  • The purposes of this study are predictions of the changes in the section geometry and determination of the initial cross section so that opposite side in height direction is exactly parallel after coiling process. Finite element analysis is carried out for the calculation of the sectional changes for mold spring item. Analysis results reveal that the slope of the top and bottom sides varies in the range of 5 to 8 degrees and the amount depends on the dimension of the outer diameter. The slopes of the sides should be defined first among design variables.

  • The water entry behaviors of projectiles with different cone-headed angles were studied numerically, experimentally and theoretically, mainly focusing on the hydrodynamic impact in the initial stage. Based on MMALE algorithm, it was proposed a formula of impact deceleration, which relied on the initial entry velocity and cone-headed angle. Meanwhile, in order to verify the validity of the simulation model, experiments using accelerometer and high-speed camera were carried out, and their results were in a good agreement with simulation results. Also, theoretical calculation results of cavity diameter were compared with experiments and simulation results. It was observed that the simulation method had a good reliability, which would make forecast on impact deceleration in an engineering project.

  • The backward extrusion process of titanium alloy with large length to diameter ratio was simulated for different punch and die shape. The process variables such as initial billet shape, interface friction, contacting time and punch velocity were investigated and compared with experimental results. To make more effectively titanium alloy cup shape forging products with vertical wall, a modified die design which can reduce forging load, prevent sticking with punch and minimize material loss was suggested.

  • To synthesize Sn nanoparticles (NPs) less than 30 nm in diameter, a modified polyol process was conducted at room temperature using a reducing agent, and the effects of different pH values of the initial solutions on the morphology and size of the synthesized Sn NPs were analyzed. tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate, diethylene glycol, sodium borohydride, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and sodium hydroxide were used as a precursor, reaction medium, reducing agent, capping agent, and pH adjusting agent, respectively. It was found by transmission electron microscopy that the morphology of the synthesized Sn NPs varied according to the pH of the initial solution. Moreover, while the size decreased to 11.32 nm with an increase up to 11.66 of the pH value, the size increased rapidly to 39.25 nm with an increase to 12.69. The pH increase up to 11.66 dominantly promoted generation of electrons and increased the amount of initial nucleation in the solution, finally inducing the reduced-size of the Sn particles. However, the additional increase of pH dominantly induced a decrease of PVP by neutralization, which resulted in acceleration of the agglomeration by collisions between particles.

  • Increasing the critical current density of superconducting wire is one of the difficult challenges in the field of superconductivity. It is well known that the higher volume fraction of uniformly dispersed α-Ti is able to enhance the critical current density of superconducting material NbTi because α-Ti serves as a flux pinning center. The volume fraction of α-Ti highly depends on the grain size of NbTi because α-Ti precipitates at the grain boundaries or triple points. For this purpose, we investigated the effect of initial microstructures of NbTi obtained from hot rolling in various temperature conditions on the critical current density. In addition, subsequent heat treatment was assigned to precipitate α-Ti and groove rolling/cold drawing was adopted to produce a wire with a diameter of about 1.0 mm. It was observed that the band structure was formed after hot rolling at 500~600℃. It was also found that the volume fraction of α-Ti after hot rolling at 500~600℃ was higher and it led to the highest critical current density.
