Purpose: To investigate the corrosion inhibition effect of the natural spearmint oil extracted from Mentha Spicata plants on 304 stainless steel in different concentrations of hydrochloric acid. Method: The anti-corrosive effect has been investigated in 0.5m, 1m and 2m HCl using weight loss test and electrochemical polarization method as a function of inhibitor concentration and immersion time in strong chloride environment. The surface morphology was analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: The corrosion rate of steel decreased and inhibition efficiency increased with the increase in inhibitor concentration. Microscopic evaluation revealed significant corrosion in the specimens immersed in uninhibited conditions. Potentiodynamic polarization test results showed an increase in corrosion potential (Ecorr) and decrease in corrosion current (icorr) value with increasing concentration of inhibitor. Conclusions: Immersion of steel in higher concentration of inhibitor resulted in greater surface coverage value and hence lesser number of surface corrosion sites/pores were formed; thus lowering the corrosion rate.
The inhibition performance of sodium gluconate (SG), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and their mixture (SG/CTAB) on the corrosion behavior of ${\alpha}$-brass in 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution has been investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry (ICPS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques. The results reveal that SG with 5ppm CTAB, noted SG/CTAB, acts as a good corrosion inhibitor and its inhibition efficiency reached 89% after 24 h immersion in sulfuric acid solution, but slightly decreased at higher temperatures. The polarization curves displayed that SG/CTAB acts as a cathodic-kind inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies revealed that the addition of 5ppm CTAB to different concentrations of SG considerably increases the corrosion resistance of ${\alpha}$-brass. The SEM-EDS and ICPS analyses support the experimental results. Further, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to understand the adsorption profiles of SG/CTAB on Cu(111) and Zn(111) surfaces.
The o-Vanillin - Glutamine Schiff base [2-Hydroxy-3-Methoxy BenzylidineCarbomyl) -2-Butanoic Acid] was examined for low carbon steel corrosion inhibition in acid media. Weight loss studies were carried out at three different temperatures to determine the inhibition efficiency (IE). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the charge transfer resistance controlled the corrosion reaction and Tafel polarization indicated that the Schiff base acts as mixed mode of inhibitor. SEM images were recorded for the surface morphology of the low carbon steel surface. DFT studies revealed corrosion control mechanisms using quantum chemical parameters such as EHOMO, ELUMO, energy gap (∆E), chemical Hardness (η), chemical Softness (σ), Electronegativity (χ), and the fraction of electron transferred (∆N), which is calculated using Gaussian software 09. The gas-phase geometry was fully optimized in the Density Functional Theory (DFT/B3LYP-6-31G (d)).The DFT results are in good agreement with the experimental results. All the results proved that the Schiff Base (2-Hydroxy-3-Metoxy BenzylidineCarbomyl) -2-Butanoic is a suitable alternative for corrosion inhibition of low carbon steel in acid media.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of pyroligneous acids on urea hydrolysis for the purpose of inhibiting ammonia volatilization during urea fertilizer application. Different types of synthetic urease inhibitors have been searched and developed, but their use is limited due to varying inhibition effects on soil urease, and environmental problems. In this study, the effect of pyroligneous acids, a natural substance, on urea hydrolysis in soil was evaluated by analyzing inhibition of urease activity. Pyroligneous acids inhibited plant urease and microbial urease activity, as well as soil urease with various urease complex. In addition, pyroligneous acids exhibited non-competitive urease inhibition effect through urease kinetics and inhibited urea hydrolysis in the soil. This study showed that pyroligneous acids treatment with urea fertilizer decreases the loss of urea fertilizer, improves the efficiency of nitrogen application on plant and reduces the amount of nitrogen fertilizers applied in soil.
Inhibition effects of cysteine(Cys), methionine(Met), and histidine(His) on the corrosion of cobalt were investigated in deaerated 0.5 M HCl and 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. All the inhibition efficiency (IE) in the amino acids for the cobalt corrosion depended on the mixed inhibition. However, IE in the solution of $H_2SO_4$ depended more on the anodic and in the solution of HCl on the cathodic inhibition. Amino acid adsorption process on cobalt surface in the solution can be explained by modified Langmuir isotherm. The molecules of histidine dissolved in both of the solution were physically adsorbed due to the electrostatic interaction between the surface of {$Co-Cl^{-{\delta}}$} and the {$-NH_3{^+}$} or {$-NH^+=$} of His. However the other cases of adsorption in this investigation can be explained by chemical adsorption between the empty d-orbital of Co and the lone pair of electron in S-atom in Cys and Met.
The operational characteristics of anaerobic bioreactors in treating swine wastewater were evaluated upto hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 day and organic loading rate (OLR) of $5.1kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ for 200 days. The bioreactors were effective in treating swine wastewaters with COD removal efficiency of $78.9{\sim}81.5%$ and biogas generation of $0.39{\sim}0.59m^3/kg-COD_r$ at OLR of $1.1{\sim}2.2kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$. The two-stage ASBF anaerobic bioreactors was effective in treating different characteristics of swine wastewaters since they showed high and stable COD removal efficiency at high OLR due to effective retention of biomass by media and staging. The effects of ammonia on anaerobic digestion were investigated by operating two-stage ASBF reactors using swine wastewaters as influent without and with ammonia removal at HRT of $1{\sim}2$ days and OLR of $2.2{\sim}9.6kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ for 250 days. The COD removal efficiency and biogas generation of two-stage ASBF reactors was decreased by increasing influent ammonia concentrations to 1,580 mg (T-N)/L with increasing OLR to $6.3kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, while those were increased by maintaining influent ammonia concentrations below 340 mg (T-N)/L by MAP precipitation with increasing OLR to $9.6kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$. Initial inhibition of ammonia on anaerobic processes was observed at a concentration of 760 mg (T-N)/L and the COD removal efficiency and biogas generation dropped to 1/2 at ammonia concentration ranges of $1,540{\sim}1,870mg$ (T-N)/L. It is essential to remove ammonia in swine wastewaters to an initial inhibition level before anaerobic processes for the effective removal of COD.
Pickling inhibitors can be used to form an adsorbed layer on the metal surface to hinder the discharge of H^+$ and dissolution of metal ions. Nitrogen-containing inhibitors were selected as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel (MS) in pickling acid process. In this study, the addition of inhibitor, the pickling temperatures and the pickling times were the parameters to investigate the effects on the inhibition efficiency (IE) for MS by using weight loss measurement. Preliminary results show that the IE increased with the increase in pickling time from 10 minutes to 60 minutes, and the IE also increased with the increase in temperature at room temperature and $40^{\circ}C$. At the higher temperature. the IE values are higher and almost independent with the pickling time. Furthermore, the potentiodynamic polarization, open circuit corrosion potential-time and corrosion current-time studies show that nitorgen-containing inhibitor behaves predominantly as cathodic polarization. The roughness test and SEM investigation are also studied in this paper.
To investigate impediments to plasmid transformation in Brevibacterium flavum BF4 and B. lactofermentum BL1, cell surface barriers were determined by measuring growth inhibition whilst enzymatic barriers were determined by comparing DNA methylation properties. B. lactofermentum was more sensitive to growth inhibition by glycine than B. flavum. Release of cellular proteins during sonication was more rapid for B. lactofermentum than for B. flavum. Plasmid DNA (pCSL 17) isolated from B. flavum transformed recipient $McrBC^+$ strains of Escherichia coli with lower efficiency than $McrBC^-$. McrBC digestion of this DNA confirmed that B. flavum contain methylated cytidines in the target sequence of McrBc sequences but B. lactofermentum contained a different methylation pattern. DNA derived from the B. lactofermentum transformed recipient $EcoKR^+$ strains of E. coli with lower efficiency than $EcoKR^-$, indicating the presence of methylated adenosines in the target sequence of EcoK sequences. The present data describe the differences in the physical and enzymatic barriers between two species of corynebacteria and also provide some insight into the successful foreign gene expression in corynebacteria.
The adsorption of N-[(E)-Pyridin-2-ylmethylidene] aniline, a Schiff base, on to mild steel surface in 1M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions and the consequent corrosion protection were studied employing weight loss method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. DFT calculations were performed to investigate its interaction with the metal surface at the atomic level to understand its inhibition mechanism. The adsorption process is well described by the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption is spontaneous and the interaction of the inhibitor at the mild steel surface is mainly through physisorption. The Ra values obtained in AFM studies for the uninhibited and inhibited sample in HCl media respectively are 0.756 and 0.559 ㎛, and that in H2SO4 media are 0.411 and 0.406 ㎛. The lesser roughness values of the inhibited sample shows the adsorption of the molecules onto the mild surface. The inhibition efficiencies were found to improve with concentration of the inhibitor and the maximum efficiency was observed at 400ppm in all the investigation methods adopted. The inhibitor was found to exhibit a higher efficiency in HCl media (95.7%) than in H2SO4 (92.8%). The theoretical and experimental results are found to be in good agreement.

Development of hematite-coated sand was evaluated for the application of the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) in the arsenic-contaminated subsurface of the metal mining areas. The removal efficiency of As(III) and As(V), the effect of anion competition and the capability of arsenic removal in the flow system were investigated through the experiments of adsorption isotherm, arsenic removal kinetics against anion competition and column removal. Hematite-coated sand followed a linear adsorption isotherm with high adsorption capacity at low level concentrations of arsenic (< 1.0 mg/l). When As(III) and As(V) underwent adsorption reactions in the presence of anions (sulfate, nitrate and bicarbonate), sulfate caused strong inhibition of arsenic removal, and bicarbonate and nitrate caused weak inhibition due to specific and nonspecific adsorption onto hematite, respectively. In the column experiments, high content of hematite-coated sand enhance the arsenic removal, but the amount of the arsenic removal decreased due to the higher affinity of As(V) than As(III) and reduced adsorption kinetics in the flow system, Therefore, the amount of hematite-coated sand, the adsorption affinity of arsenic species and removal kinetics determined the removal efficiency of arsenic in the flow system. arsenic, hematite-coated sand, permeable reactive barrier, anion competition, adsorption.
