Infrared guided weapons act as threats that greatly degrade the survivability of combat aircraft. Infrared weapons detect and track the target aircraft by sensing the infrared signature radiated from the aircraft fuselage. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the infrared signature and susceptibility of supersonic aircraft according to omni-directional detection angle. Through the numerical analysis, we derived the surface temperature distribution of fuselage and omni-directional infrared signature. Then, we calculated the detection range according to detection angle in consideration of IR sensor's parameters. Using in-house code, the lethal range was calculated by considering the relative velocity between aircraft and IR missile. As a result, the elevational susceptibility is larger than the azimuthal susceptibility, and it means that the aircraft can be attacked in wider area at the elevational situation.
We fabricated thermally evaporated 10 nm-Ni/1 nm-Ir/(poly)Si films to investigate the energy saving property of silicides formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at the temperature range of $300{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. Moreover, we fabricated 100 nm-thick ITO/(poly)Si films with an rf-sputter as references. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) and an X-ray diffractometer were used to determine cross-sectional microstructure and phase changes. A UV-VIS-NIR and FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) were employed for near-IR and middle-IR absorbance. Through TEM analysis, we confirmed 20~65 nm-thick silicide layers formed on the single and polycrystalline silicon substrates. Ir-inserted nickel silicide on single crystalline substrate showed almost the same absorbance in near IR region as well as ITO, but Ir-inserted nickel silicide on polycrystalline substrate, which had the uniform absorbance in specific region, showed better absorbance in near IR region than ITO. The Ir-inserted nickel silicide on polycrystalline substrate particularly showed better absorbance in middle IR region than ITO. The results imply that nano-thick Ir-inserted nickel silicides may have excellent absorbing capacity in near-IR and middle-IR region.

In the development process of new naval ships, it is necessary to make the effort of the signature management and reduction of ship infrared(IR) signature to increase the ship survivability(susceptibility). So far the ship's contrast radiant intensity is used as a ship IR signature design criteria during the naval ship design stages. However, nowaday it is in a state of disorder at the basic design stage because of the lack of any related studies and methods. In this study, the IR signature management methods for improving the signature reduction and ship survivability are suggested by the comparison analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of signature management techniques. And also the criteria for the ship signature management are suggested when considering the infrared signature measuring assets and sea trial environments of the Korean peninsula.
In this paper, a study of solid rocket propellant formulation is performed to suppress plume and reduce IR(infrared) signature which occurs in propellant combustion. The solid propellant to enhance the stealthy ability was formulated in terms of the kinds and the effects of afterburning suppressant on the ballistic performance and the amount of primary smoke. In addition, substantial decrease in plume and IR signature is confirmed by static firing test by a 4 inch standard motor.

A study on radiation hardening of infrared(IR) detector, the chief component of IR camera was performed. The radiation test on IR sensor passivated with the ZnS by Co$^{60}$ gamma-ray over 1 Mrads showed the reduction in Ro by 1/100 which was related to the noise level. This effect that was caused by carrier trapping in the ZnS passivation layer increased the leakage current and resulted in degradation in the device performance. For the radiation hardening of IR devices we suggested the ones with CdTe passivation layer which had a tendency to reluctant to carrier trapping in its layer and developed test patterns. Radiation test to the patterns showed that the our CdTe passivated device could survived over 1 Mrad gamma-ray dose.
The conversion of an invisible thermal radiation pattern of an object into a visible image using infrared (IR) thermal technology is very useful to understand phenomena what we are interested in. Although IR thermal images were originally developed for military and space applications, they are currently employed to determine thermal properties and heat features in various applications, such as the non-destructive evaluation of industrial equipment, power plants, electricity, military or drive-assisted night vision, and medical applications to monitor heat generation or loss. Recently, IR imaging-based monitoring systems have been considered for application in agricultural, including crop care, plant-disease detection, bruise detection of fruits, and the evaluation of fruit maturity. This paper reviews recent progress in the development of IR thermal imaging techniques and suggests possible applications of thermal imaging techniques in agriculture.

Development-concerned parties, business managers and test evaluators have experienced conflicts among themselves due to the absence of standardized criteria for military electro-optical(EO) and infrared(IR) devices in test evaluation planning and evaluation phases. Therefore, establishment of objectified test and evaluation criteria for EO/IR devices is required. This paper applies South Korea's weather measurement average of minimum 15 km for visibility range, 3 bar from Johnson criteria for EO device and 4 bar from NATO's STANAG-4347 for IR device for target type, and 50 % probability for evaluation criteria, respectively. Based upon these criteria, this paper will establish suitable criteria that are improved for development weapon system in consideration of required capability of demanding forces and field environment.
This research was carried out to obtain the fundamental data for the development of the technology and practical use of far-infrared radiation(IR) drying of quarter-sliced decorative veneers of walnut and red oak. The average drying rates of IR drying were about one and half to four times those of kiln drying and this tendency was prominent in thin veneer. The end wavinesses of the IR-dried veneers were smaller than those of kiln-dried veneers. These were largely recovered by the cold treatments after drying. The consumed electric power for IR drying was about one-fifth to two-fifthes compared to that for kiln drying.
We present preliminary results of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) seen by AKARI as well as Spitzer. By examining the AKARI LMC survey and the Spitzer data, we have searched for IR counterparts to 45 known SNRs in the LMC and could identify 28 SNRs with associated IR emission. 13 SNRs among them are newly detected in IR bands. For the entire IR SNRs, we make a catalog containing general information and the AKARI and/or Spitzer fluxes. Using the catalog, their IR colors and the possible correlation of the IR fluxes with the X-ray fluxes are examined. For some interesting SNRs, we have performed NIR spectroscopy with AKARI. An aromatic feature at $3.3{\mu}m$ can be identified in LMC SNR N49. We investigate the characteristics of the IR features and discuss the PAH mission mechanism in SNRs.
We have tested the performance of the Proto-model of Space Infrared Cryogenic System (PSICS), which is a small infrared camera, developed by Korea Astronomy and Space science Institute (KASI), Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), and i3system co., as a cooperation project. The purpose of PSICS is to ensure a technology of small infrared cryogenic system for future development of space infrared (IR) cameras. PSICS consists of cryogenic part, IR sensor and electronics part, and optical part. The performance test of each part and the integrated system has been completed successfully. PSICS will be used as a guiding camera for ground-based IR telescopes and a test system for developing a space-borne instrument.
