Design of a High Stable Measuring Circuit for Radioactive Pulses (방사선 펄스의 고안정 계측회로 설계)

  • The aim of this paper is to develop a high stable measuring device for radioactive pulses. The device consists of a high voltage supply unit using a fly-back converter principle, and a pulse detection unit for gamma-rays and neutrons. The high voltage supply unit designed can generate DC voltage up to 1,500v at 5V-input, and have a series voltage regulator to maintain the output voltage constantly, resulting in less than 1.63% of voltage regulation. The pulse detection parts consists of an active integrator, a pole-zero circuit, and a 3-stage amplifier of 60 dB, and its frequency bandwidth is from 37 Hz to 300 kHz. From the experimental results, it is confirmed that the measuring device can count at least 10,000 pulses in a second.

  • This study is concerned with the design of a camera iris-shutter device for producing force. The camera iris-shutter with yoke should have a smaller size and a bigger magnetic force than the previous model. Since the induced magnetic force operates shutter movement, the magnetic force maximization for a given input current is an important issue. To achieve the goal, new system is designed by the topology optimization method. The design is refined through the design of experiments to find the detail camera iris shutter design satisfying design constraints.

Development of Transmitter/Receiver Front-End Module with Automatic Tx/Rx Switching Scheme for Retro-Reflective Beamforming

  • In this work, a transmitter/receiver front-end module (T/R FEM) with an automatic Tx/Rx switching scheme for a 2.4 GHz microwave power transfer is developed for a retro-reflective beamforming scheme. Recently, research on wireless power transfer techniques has moved to wireless charging systems for mobile devices. Retro-reflective beamforming is a good candidate for tracking the spatial position of a mobile device to be charged. In Tx mode, the T/R FEM generates a minimum of 1 W. It also comprises an amplitude and phase monitoring port for transmitting RF power. In Rx mode, it passes an Rx pilot signal from a mobile device to a digital baseband subsystem to recognize the position of the mobile device. The insertion loss of the Rx signal path is 4.5 dB. The Tx and Rx modes are automatically switched by detecting the Tx input power. This T/R FEM is a design example of T/R FEMs for wireless charging systems based on a retro-reflective beamforming scheme.

  • Due to wide usage of smartphones and mobile internet, mobile devices are used in various fields such as sending SMS, participating SNS, retrieving information and the number of users taking advantage of them are growing. The keypads of a mobile device are relatively smaller than those of desktop computers. Thus, the user has a difficulty in input sentences quickly and correctly. In this study, we introduce some string recommendation and modification techniques which can be used for helping a user input in mobile devices quickly and correctly. We describe a TRIE dictionary and n-gram language model which are the main technologies of the keyword recommendation applied to the online search engines.

A User-friendly Remote Speech Input Method in Spontaneous Speech Recognition System

  • In this paper, we propose a remote speech input device, a new method of user-friendly speech input in spontaneous speech recognition system. We focus the user friendliness on hands-free and microphone independence in speech recognition applications. Our method adopts two algorithms, the automatic speech detection and the microphone array delay-and-sum beamforming (DSBF)-based speech enhancement. The automatic speech detection algorithm is composed of two stages; the detection of speech and nonspeech using the pitch information for the detected speech portion candidate. The DSBF algorithm adopts the time domain cross-correlation method as its time delay estimation. In the performance evaluation, the speech detection algorithm shows within-200 ms start point accuracy of 93%, 99% under 15dB, 20dB, and 25dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments, respectively and those for the end point are 72%, 89%, and 93% for the corresponding environments, respectively. The classification of speech and nonspeech for the start point detected region of input signal is performed by the pitch information-base method. The percentages of correct classification for speech and nonspeech input are 99% and 90%, respectively. The eight microphone array-based speech enhancement using the DSBF algorithm shows the maximum SNR gaing of 6dB over a single microphone and the error reductin of more than 15% in the spontaneous speech recognition domain.

On the Design of a WiFi Direct 802.11ac WLAN under a TGn MIMO Multipath Fading Channel

  • WiFi Direct (WD) is a state of the art technology for a Device-to-Device (D2D) communication in 802.11 networks. The performance of the WD system can be significantly affected by some key factors such as the type of application, specifications of MAC and PHY layer parameters, and surrounding environment etc. It is, therefore, important to develop a system model that takes these factors into account. In this paper, we focus on investigating the design parameters of the PHY layer that could maximize the efficiency of the WD 802.11 system. For this purpose, a basic theoretical model is formulated for a WD network under a 2x2 Multiple In Multiple Out (MIMO) TGn channel B model. The design level parameters such as input symbol rate and antenna spacing, as well as the effects of the environment, are thoroughly examined in terms of path gain, spectral density, outage probability and Packet Error Rate (PER). Thereafter, a novel adaptive algorithm is proposed to choose optimal parameters in accordance with the Quality of Experience (QoE) for a targeted application. The simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the standard method thereby achieving an optimal performance in an adaptive manner.

  • Creating a virtual reality ecosystem is more important than anything else for virtual reality, which has recently been drawing attention as a sector of the fourth industrial revolution. Virtual reality ecosystem consists of content (C), device (D), platform (P), and network (N). While content is key among these, virtual reality depends on input and output devices, so device utilization is very important. Recently, hands-on devices are being developed for realistic experiences. This study presents examples of contents development using VirZOOM, an experienced device, to reduce immersion and motion sickness of VR contents. We look forward to further promoting the development of virtual reality content in the future through this study.

  • In SCADA systems, an RTU is a device installed at a remote location that collects data, codes the data into a format that is transmittable and transmits the data back to a central station, or MTU. An RTU also collects information from the master device and implements processes that are directed by master device. RTUs are equipped with input channels for sensing or metering, output channels for control, indication or alarms and a communications port. In general, the data are transmitted via a wired communication infrastructure such as RS422 or RS485 between RTU and MTU. But, limited range of wired communication doesn't allow the system to cover remote areas over the limitation, and building a wired communication network is not easy in the circumstances. In this Paper, we design and implement a smart cost-effective Web-RTU that can communicate with MTU via Web. Web is of benefit to the Web-RTU, because it is not only free from the distance limitations, but also is built easily and cost-effectively wherever Internet resources are available. Additionally, Web can be easily applied to the SCADA system with the development of hardware and software for communications. The Web-RTU has a program memory, a data memory and a RAM inside, and uses Atmega128, low-cost 8 bit micro-processor with eight AI(Analog Input). It performs well enough to implement all existing roles of RTU.

A Comparison of Visual Occlusion Methods: Touch Screen Device vs. PLATO Goggles

  • Objective: This study compares two visual occlusion methods for the evaluation of in-vehicle interfaces. Background: Visual occlusion is a visual demand measuring technique which uses periodic vision/occlusion cycle to simulate a driving(or mobile) environment. It has been widely used for the evaluation of in-vehicle interfaces. There are two major implementation methods for this technique: (1) occlusion using PLATO(portable liquid crystal apparatus for tachistoscopic occlusion) goggles; (2) occlusion using a software application on a touchscreen device. Method: An experiment was conducted to examine the visual demand of an in-vehicle interface prototype using the goggle-based and the touchscreen-based occlusion methods. Address input and radio tuning tasks were evaluated in the experiment. Results: The results showed that, for the radio tuning task, there were no significant differences in total shutter open time and resumability ratio between the two occlusionconditions. However, it took longer for the participants to input addresses with the touchscreen-based occlusion. Conclusion & Application: The results suggest that touchscreen-based method could be used as an alternative to traditional, gogglebased visual occlusion especially in less demanding visual tasks such as radio tuning.
