Anti-Oxidant, Pro-Oxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Unpolished Rice Relevant to Colorectal Cancer

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major worldwide health problem owing to its high prevalence and mortality rates. Carcinogenesis in the colon is a multistage and multifactorial process. An imbalance between free radical exposure and anti-oxidant defense systems may leads to oxidative stress and attack of macromolecules which can alter signal transduction pathways and gene expression. Consequently, oxidative damage can lead to cellular dysfunction and contribute to pathophysiological processes in a variety of diseases including CRC. One factor tightly associated with CRC is chronic inflammation, which can be present from the earliest stage of tumor onset. Unpolished rice is an attractive chemoprevention in CRC due to their anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this paper is to review evidence linking oxidative stress and inflammation to CRC and to provide essential background information for understanding future research on oxidative stress and inflammation on CRC. Mechanisms of action of unpolished rice in CRC carcinogenesis are also discussed.

  • Digital signal processing hardware based in RNS is currently considered as an important method for high speed and low cost hardware realization. This research designs and implements the method for conversion from a specific residue number system with moduli of the from $(2^k-1, 2^k, 2^k+1)$ to a weighted number system. Then, it simulates the implementation using a overlapped multiple-bit scanning method in the process of CRT conversion. In conclusion, the simulation shows that the CRT method which is adopted in this research, performs arithmetic operations faster than the traditional approaches, due to advantages of parallel processing and carry-free arithmetic operation.

  • This paper presents capacitive tactile sensor that can detect normal and shear forces. This tactile sensor consists of index plate, sensing plate, and elastic dielectric layer. The calculated sensing character is based on the changes of space between two horizontal plate. Larger overlap areas and narrow space between top and bottom plate guarantees higher sensitivity. Tactile sense information can be calculated from the changes of phase of output signal. The symmetric arrangement of sensing plates makes the manufacturing process easier and guarantees the stability of the structure. In this paper, the sensor structure is designed, the mechanism of the Proposed sensor is theoretically explained, and the simulated result is presented.

  • It is occurred bus arrival time errors when a bus arrives at a bus stop because of a variety of traffic condition such as traffic signal cycle, the time to get on and off a bus, a bus-only lane and so on. In this paper, bus delay time which is occurred as the result of traffic condition was estimated with Markov Chain process and bus arrival time at each bus stop was predicted with it. As the result of the study, it is confirmed to improve accuracy than the method of bus arrival time prediction with existing method (weighed moving average method) in case predicting bus arrival time using 7 by 7 and 9 by 9 matrixes.

  • A CMOS driving circuit for active matrix type polymer electroluminescent displays was designed to develop an on-chip microdisplay on the single crystal silicon wafer substrate. The driving circuit is a conventional structure that is composed of the row, column and pixel driving parts. 256 gray scales were implemented using pulse amplitude modulation method. The 2-transistor driving scheme was adopted for the pixel driving part. The layout was carried out considering the compatibility with the standard CMOS process. Judging from the layout of the driving circuit, it turns that it is possible to implement a high-resolution display about 400 ppi resolution. Through the HSPICE simulation, it was verified that this circuit is capable of driving a VGA signal mode display and implementing 256 gray levels.

  • A charge-coupled device (CCD) area image sensor has been demonstrated with an experi-mental 16$\times$16 prototype. The prototype is a vertical frame transfer charge.coupled imager using two-phase gate electrode structures. In this device, ion-implanted barriers are used for two -phase CCD, and NMOS process has been adopted. The total imaging setup consisting of optical lens, clock generators, clock drivels, staircase signal generators, and oscilloscope is easily achieved with the aid of PROM . English alphabets are displayed on the oscilloscope screen using the total imaging set-up. We measure charge transfer inefficiency and dark current for the fabricated devices.

  • The system requirement definition, system configuration, major parameters for GNSS ground station development are presented in this paper. GNSS ground station system consists of the GNSS sensor station, up link station and monitoring & control system. The GNSS sensor station consists of navigation receiver subsystem which process the GPS and Galileo navigation signal, automic clock subsystem, meteorological data receiving subsystem and navigation data processing subsystem. To communicate the error correction of navigation fate, GNSS sensor station interface with GNSS Control Center.

  • The advanced Alarm System (AS) employs modem digital technology to implement the alarm functions of the NPP(Nuclear Power Plant). The use of modem digital technology can provide advanced alarm processing in which new algorithms such as a signal validation, advanced alarm processing logic and other features are applied to improve the control room man-machine interfaces. This paper will describe the design process of the AS of NPP, improving the system reliability and availability using the reliability prediction tool, design strategies regarding the human performance topics associated with a computer-based AS and the results of the performance analysis using a prototype of the AS.

  • This paper makes a close inquiry into ill-conditioning that may be occurred in wireless localization of the sensor nodes based on network signals in the wireless sensor network and provides the clue for solving the problem. In order to estimate the location of a node based on the range information calculated using the signal propagation time, LS (Least Squares) method is usually used. The LS method estimates the solution that makes the squared estimation error minimal. When a nonlinear function is used for the wireless localization, ILS (Iterative Least Squares) method is used. The ILS method process the LS method iteratively after linearizing the nonlinear function at the initial nominal point. This method, however, has a problem that the final solution may converge into a LM (Local Minimum) instead of a GM (Global Minimum) according to the deployment of the fixed nodes and the initial nominal point. The conditions that cause the problem are explained and an adaptive method is presented to solve it, in this paper. It can be expected that the stable location solution can be provided in implementation of the wireless localization methods based on the results of this paper.

Obstacle Identification by Parabolic Curve Fitting using Ultrasonic Sensors Arranged on Ring Frame (링 프레임형 초음파 센서의 포물선 피팅에 의한 장애물 식별)

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm for ultrasonic sensors arranged on ring frame to identify obstacles surrounding itself by TOFs (time of flight). The ring frame has multiple channels consisting of a transmitter and a receiver. When the transmitter of a selected channel transmits ultrasonic signal, the TOFs of reflected signals from obstacles are acquired by the receiver of the channel. The process continues for all channels consecutively. Then, by using parabolic curve fitting of TOFs of all channel, the proposed algorithm not only calculates distances from multiple obstacles, but also identifies if the shape of obstacles are point or plane by the coefficients of the curve. By the experiment using 16 ultrasonic transceivers on the ring frame in the environment of two poles and two planes, we show the feasibility of the proposed scheme.
